Sadang gopchang restaurant, 3 hanwoo servings for two: Bareun Hwangso

In short

Bareun Hwangso Gopchang is a Korean beef gopchang (grilled beef intestine) restaurant in an alley by Exit 10 of Sadang Station in Dongjak, Seoul. The writer came for dinner with her mother and ordered 3 servings of hanwoo (Korean beef) gopchang at 25,000 won each plus 2 servings of kkakdugi (radish kimchi) fried rice at 4,000 won each, and the gopchang arrived with no off smell and plenty of fat inside, while the mayo-drizzled fried rice was the most memorable part. With its outdoor tent-style seating, Bareun Hwangso Gopchang is an easy pick for grilled beef intestines and a bottle of soju.

Why we chose Bareun Hwangso Gopchang near Sadang Station

Hi, this is Jjwing 😊 Today I'm writing about a visit to Bareun Hwangso Gopchang near Sadang Station, where I had a delicious dinner with my mom. I usually love gopchang (grilled beef intestines) anyway, and that day my mom and I were trying to decide on dinner when I suddenly craved some savory gopchang, so I looked for a place near Sadang Station and went.

It wasn't far from Sadang Station Exit 10 so it was easy to find, and once inside, the place had way more of an outdoor tent (yajang) vibe than I expected — it felt perfect for gopchang with a shot of soju haha. Best of all, they said they use domestic Korean beef (hanwoo) gopchang, so I walked in with high expectations for the taste too.

Inside Bareun Hwangso Gopchang: outdoor tent-style seating

Round steel tables outside giving off an outdoor-tent feel

The first thing that caught my eye as soon as I arrived at Bareun Hwangso Gopchang was the outdoor-tent-style seating set up in front of the shop. With the doors left open and round steel tables set out, it had exactly that cozy, old-school vibe of having a shot of soju at a neighborhood pub.

I visited in the evening, and there were quite a few other customers around, giving the whole place a lively, bustling atmosphere. On a nice day, I imagine sitting outside with gopchang and soju would feel amazing 🍺. There were also indoor tables inside, so you could dine comfortably depending on the weather.

Menu board and hanwoo gopchang notice on the wall

On the wall was a menu board along with a note about the hanwoo gopchang, stating they use domestic Korean beef gopchang — which got me even more excited before ordering. Overall, the place had less of a sleek, polished feel and more of that warm, old-school character, which I think fans of that kind of atmosphere would really enjoy.

3 servings of hanwoo gopchang for two, and the side dishes

Basic banchan spread served after ordering

We ordered 3 servings of hanwoo gopchang (₩25,000 × 3) and 2 servings of kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) fried rice (₩4,000 × 2). With just my mom and me there, we ordered 3 servings of gopchang and topped it off with the kkakdugi fried rice at the end. Stopping at just gopchang felt like it would leave something missing, so we made sure to finish it off properly with the fried rice haha.

Before the main dish arrived, the basic banchan (side dishes) came out first — warm fish cake soup, chive salad, pickled perilla leaves, and a soy sauce dip with garlic and cheongyang chili.

Warm fish cake soup served in a stone pot

I tried the fish cake soup served in a ttukbaegi (stone pot) first — it was warm with a spicy kick, perfect for a spoonful or two before digging into the gopchang.

Pickled perilla leaves and soy sauce dip with cheongyang chili

Since gopchang tends to be savory and rich, having pickled perilla leaves along the way really helped clean the palate. The soy sauce dip for the gopchang was loaded with cheongyang chili and minced garlic. Dipping a piece of gopchang in it added a spicy kick that cut through the richness nicely.

Tangy, fragrant chive salad banchan

The chive salad was tangy and fragrant even eaten on its own — delicious. Pairing it with the savory gopchang made everything feel cleaner. It was also great grilled lightly on the grill pan. As the gopchang's savory fat soaked into the chives and softened them, eating them alongside the nicely browned gopchang had a whole different charm haha.

How does the hanwoo gopchang taste? No off smell, full of fat

Hanwoo gopchang and vegetables arranged on a stone plate

Finally, the main dish arrived — hanwoo gopchang 🍖 The intestines were arranged in a ring on a round stone plate, with chives, onion, mushrooms, and rice cakes piled generously in the center. With beef heart and potatoes grilling alongside too, the whole plate looked pretty hearty.

It came pre-seared, so it just needed a bit more time on the grill, but as the gopchang cooked and that savory smell wafted up, the wait felt even longer haha. Watching it turn golden brown looked so appetizing that I kept snapping photos.

Golden-brown hanwoo gopchang packed with fat

I picked up a piece of golden-brown gopchang and tried it — the outside was seared with a slightly crisp texture, while the inside was packed full of fat, giving off a deep savory flavor with every chew.

Best of all, there was almost no off smell typical of gopchang, so it was easy to enjoy without hesitation. The fat inside was rich and savory without being chewy or tough — it had a satisfying texture that kept me reaching for more.

Chives, onions, and complimentary beef heart grilling together

Eating it alongside the grilled chives and onions was tasty too. The beef heart that came as a free extra was nice and chewy, good for eating one piece at a time between bites of gopchang.

The gopchang was tasty on its own, but it also worked great wrapped with the chive salad and perilla leaves. Adding the fragrant chive salad and the clean flavor of perilla leaves to the savory gopchang cut the richness and gave each bite a mix of flavors, so I kept wrapping bite after bite haha. My mom also said it had no off smell and tasted savory, enjoying it a lot — I was glad we came together 😊 She hadn't had gopchang in years, and she was so satisfied that I felt like we'd found the right restaurant.

Finishing with mayo-drizzled kkakdugi fried rice

After eating a good amount of gopchang, of course we couldn't skip the fried rice haha. To finish off the meal, we added 2 servings of kkakdugi fried rice (₩4,000 per serving). It was made with well-fermented kkakdugi and gim (seaweed) flakes, and it looked appetizing right from the start 🍳

Kkakdugi fried rice drizzled with mayonnaise in a crosshatch pattern

They also gave us mayonnaise, which we drizzled generously in a crosshatch pattern. The combo of mayonnaise and kkakdugi fried rice was better than I expected. The spicy, slightly sweet kkakdugi fried rice paired with the savory, creamy mayonnaise made for a flavor I kept going back for. The crunchy bite of kkakdugi throughout kept the fried rice's texture interesting too. Even after filling up on gopchang, there was still room for the fried rice.

Final verdict on Bareun Hwangso Gopchang

Bareun Hwangso Gopchang was a solid choice when I wanted savory hanwoo gopchang with that cozy outdoor-tent (yajang) atmosphere near Sadang Station. It's close to Sadang Station Exit 10 so it's easy to access, and the lively yet warm vibe made it a great spot for a meal with a shot of soju after work.

Above all, the hanwoo gopchang we had that day had almost no off smell, stayed clean-tasting, and was packed with fat, giving off deep savory flavor with every chew. And the kkakdugi fried rice we finished with — with a generous drizzle of mayonnaise adding savory richness to the crunchy kkakdugi texture — was memorable too 🍚

Enjoying tasty gopchang with my mom while chatting and spending a relaxed evening together made for a really satisfying way to end the meal 😊 If you're looking to enjoy savory hanwoo gopchang with that outdoor-tent feel near Sadang Station, I'd say it's worth a visit. Especially recommend finishing off the gopchang with the fried rice at the end haha.
