For my daughter’s birthday, I wanted to treat her to a special, delicious meal, so we visited Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch (해논미역 과천직영점), which had opened in Munwon-dong, Gwacheon!

Busan-style nourishing seaweed soup sets and the atmosphere
Haenon Miyeok specializes in rich, milky Busan-style nourishing miyeokguk (seaweed soup) sets simmered for a long time. I kept seeing it mentioned as a popular gathering spot for neat Korean family meals or nourishing food, thanks to its high-quality seaweed soups made with varied, fresh ingredients such as flounder, boneless flounder, beef, scallops, oysters, and dried pollack~
There was also a wide, level parking lot right in front of the restaurant, so it was wonderfully easy to visit by car.
Wow, it felt so upscale from the entrance all the way inside...! The calm lighting and softly presented ocean scenery on the walls made it feel like we had come to a high-end Korean set-menu restaurant, so I was already in such a good mood before eating.
The stylish container-style exterior also caught my eye, and once we opened the door, the ceilings were high and the whole space felt broad and open.
There was plenty of space between tables, and high chairs were well provided, so lots of families were there for gatherings~
Is there a birthday abalone service?
They offer abalone services for birthday guests and pregnant customers. If you visit within seven days before or after your birthday, they add one abalone to your seaweed soup for free. If you want to treat someone to a special birthday meal, I think Haenon Miyeok would be such a lovely choice 😆

We chose beef and flounder seaweed soup
Once seated, we looked over the menu and found it full of varied, premium seaweed soup options: flounder, boneless flounder, scallop, beef, dried pollack, oyster, and more.

After some deliberation, my daughter ordered the most familiar, safe choice of beef seaweed soup, while I ordered the flounder seaweed soup that I had been curious about because the reviews were so good.

What is the self-serve banchan bar like?
Another great thing about Haenon Miyeok is its generously stocked self-serve bar.

Along with fresh kimchi and assorted namul (seasoned vegetable sides), there were so many tempting, tasty dishes: japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), eggplant fritters that were crisp outside and moist inside, and chewy seasoned scallops.

The quality of the basic side dishes, neatly and cleanly arranged, was excellent too.

The japchae and chilled chicken-breast salad that came as side dishes were so good that I honestly lost count of how many times I went back for refills.
They even included savory, golden-brown spicy grilled flounder as a basic side dish, so just rice and the sides alone made for a seriously abundant meal.
A seaweed soup set overflowing from earthenware bowls
Soon, our ordered seaweed soup sets arrived in ttukbaegi (earthenware bowls), and I was truly startled by both the presentation and the size.
The bowls themselves were enormous, and they came packed so generously with ingredients that they looked ready to overflow. The portion alone was overwhelming!

With the seaweed soup finally on the table, our perfect Korean set meal was complete.
Beef seaweed soup that my child enjoyed too
I first had a little taste of the beef seaweed soup my daughter ordered. The broth was truly rich, mild and clean, without even a trace of unpleasant meat smell, making it absolutely perfect for children too.

Deep, non-fishy flounder seaweed soup
The flounder seaweed soup was so creamy? and deep in flavor that I really enjoyed it. There was zero fishiness, and the broth was rich and deep like a pale nourishing soup—wow... I was genuinely impressed.

A whole piece of tender flounder flesh was inside, and the more I chewed, the more deep umami came through.
My daughter stole a bite of my flounder seaweed soup and asked if we could swap with her beef soup, hahaha. She is a picky eater, but she ate it so well,
She even got an extra refill of rice and mixed it all into the soup. Seeing her clean it up like that, when it had been so long since she had eaten this well, made me burst with pride.

On my beloved daughter’s birthday, I was so proud as a mom to give her a proper meal of nourishing food that was both good for her and perfectly delicious, instead of spicy instant food.

Taking home the leftover soup and overall satisfaction
The portions were so generous that we neatly packed up what was left and made the most of it through the next day. They say there is also a ₩4,000 discount when you take away only the soup, so next time I definitely want to make active use of the takeaway service.

At first, you might think the seaweed soup price range is a little high. But after experiencing the huge portions filling each earthenware bowl, broth with the deep richness of 15 years of experience, high-quality self-serve side dishes, and rice refills, it was such a satisfying meal that the price did not feel wasteful at all.

It was not overly stimulating, yet filling and truly felt like a proper nourishing meal, so it is a genuinely great restaurant I would like to revisit with my parents. If you are looking for a neat, deeply flavored seaweed soup set near Munwon-dong, Gwacheon, do visit at least once. You will find a wonderfully hearty spread with no regrets!
