Suwon roast chicken restaurant: corn cheese chicken at Haenggung Jangjak

In short

Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is a wood-fired whole chicken restaurant by Hwaseong Haenggung Palace in Suwon, Gyeonggi. We had the corn cheese gratin seasoned chicken with extra rice cakes and draft beer, plus crispy scorched rice at the bottom. Verdict: a filling, delicious stop before or after exploring Haenggung-dong.

I’m leaving a review of Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak (행궁장작한방통닭), a great Haenggung-dong spot right in front of Suwon Hwaseong Haenggung Palace.

It’s located right near Hwaseong Haenggung Palace. A nearby public parking lot was close too, so we parked there and walked over haha.

We wondered if there might be a wait, so we reserved on Catchtable before visiting. The dining room was spacious and comfortable! There’s seating on the second floor too.

The menu.

We ordered the corn cheese gratin seasoned wood-fired whole chicken with extra tteok (chewy rice cakes)! I finally tried the trendy corn cheese chicken too..! Haha. They set out pickled radish kimchi, kimchi, and various sauces.

First, a refreshing glass of draft beer.

The beer... seriously cold. Approved..

Herbal brining and wood-fire roasting

Before roasting, Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak’s whole chickens first go through an herbal brining process. The chicken is marinated with a range of herbal ingredients for about 12 hours, letting a subtle aroma and deep flavor soak right into the meat.

The fully marinated chicken then slowly rotates in an oak wood-fired oven for about two hours. The intense heat and gentle smoky aroma make the skin crisp while keeping the meat juicy, creating that deep, distinctive flavor of wood-fired chicken!

Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is known for a clean, mild flavor that highlights the ingredients rather than overpowering seasoning. One bite brings together crisp skin and juicy chicken, followed by a subtle herbal aroma and a clean finish.

This visual is absolutely insane.

There was such a generous pile of corn cheese on top too.

Starting with the big chicken leg. It was incredibly tender.

Tender whole chicken leg

So moist and soft—I could eat it without teeth~ The seasoning was nicely sweet too. And the combination with corn cheese? So good.

Now I get why it’s so popular lately. I’d been too lazy to make it at home, so this was maximum satisfaction~~~ It isn’t spicy, so younger kids can enjoy it too.

Extra rice cakes and scorched rice at the bottom

The extra rice cakes! I’m so glad we added them, and the little bit stuck to the bottom, like nurungji (crispy scorched rice), was the key point.

There was rice underneath too, and then I understood why kimchi came as a side dish. It made me crave kimchi so badly~~~ I wondered whether it would go with the seasoned sauce, but the rice was so good, and one chicken with rice and rice cakes was seriously filling for two.

If you love roasted whole chicken, enjoy a whole bird at Haenggung Jangjak Tongdak in Haenggung-dong! Exploring Haenggung-dong afterward to help digest is the best route ever. No parking worries either—also the best! I recommend it for a Haenggung-dong date course!
