Suwon restaurant cheese katsu and perilla oil soba: Gohobi Katsu

In short

Gohobi Katsu is a Japanese restaurant near Suwon Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi, serving pork cutlet and soba. I had the whole mozzarella cheese katsu set for ₩15,000 and perilla oil mixed soba for ₩11,000 at its counter-focused seating. Verdict: a great solo lunch stop when you want cheese katsu and soba together.

Today, while wondering what to eat alone for lunch, I heard there was a great spot near Suwon Station where you can settle on a Japanese pork cutlet-and-soba combination! I’m back with my honest review of Gohobi Katsu (고호비카츠), near Suwon Station Rodeo Street in the direction of the Suwon Tax Office!

A cozy atmosphere centered on counter seating

The moment I walked in, the warm wood-toned, L-shaped datchi (counter) table caught my eye.

With its open kitchen, you can watch the cooking right in front of you, and it felt especially neat and hygienic. Since it is mostly counter seating, it is perfect for dining alone without feeling self-conscious!

Ordering whole mozzarella cheese katsu and perilla oil mixed soba

That day, I wanted both hearty, nutty katsu and cool, nutty noodles, so I picked this ultimate combination without hesitation haha.

How was the whole mozzarella cheese katsu set?

Inside the crisp fried coating comes a generous filling of white, rich whole mozzarella cheese!

Take a bite and the cheese stretches on and on—the cheesy flavor and soft texture were ridiculously delicious, haha.

Paired with cabbage topped with the apple-carrot salad dressing on the table, it was so crunchy that I just kept eatingㅠㅠ (Diet failed, haha.)

I also loved that the sauces are laid out like this, so you can keep adding more without worrying, haha.

Add tsuyu to the perilla oil mixed soba

It arrives with earthy buckwheat noodles topped generously with shredded seaweed, scallions, and a nutty powder. As soon as you mix it, the rich aroma of perilla oil really hits your nose.

Mix in as much of the accompanying umami-packed tsuyu dipping sauce as you like, and the flavor is amplified—the balance with the cheese katsu is absolutely perfect!

Tips for enjoying the cheese katsu

There are clear instructions on the table for how to enjoy it, so even first-time visitors can have a much fuller experience!

For the first bite of cheese katsu, I recommend lightly dipping it in wasabi or pink salt. It really brings out the cheese’s natural richness and the clean flavor of the meat, so I was happily stuffing my mouth even without sauce, lol.

Having the tangy salad and sharp wasabi along the way completely cut through the richness of the fried food, so I could finish every last bite cleanly. With the L-shaped counter seating, I could come alone, take my time without worrying about anyone else, and focus only on my meal—such a happy lunch!
