Gunpo pork cutlet and soba sets: Onjeong Gyeongyangsikdang

Last weekend, my wife and I went to Onjeong Gyeongyangsikdang Sanbon Academy District Branch (온정경양식당 산본학원가점). I chose the cheddar cheese pork cutlet, while my wife chose the buckwheat soba and Western-style pork cutlet set. Even the set with pork cutlet and noodles came with soup and bread, making for a filling lunch.

What was the restaurant like at weekend lunch?

At the time of our visit, it opened at 11 AM and was closed every Monday. There was operating-hours information posted by the entrance.

We arrived at 11:30 AM, and there were already diners eating. The interior was fairly spacious and clean, so I thought it would be fine for a family meal. There was also a school nearby.

How do ordering and the self-service bar work?

We ordered at the kiosk. Water and side dishes could be taken from the self-service bar, and in addition to salad, kimchi, and danmuji (pickled radish), more rice was available if needed. We both tend to eat small portions, so we were full without adding rice.

Can you order pork cutlet and noodles together?

The pork cutlet could be chosen in Western-style, cheddar cheese, spicy, or curry flavors. The noodle menu included udon and buckwheat soba, and there were also sets with both pork cutlet and noodles.

While waiting for the food, I also looked over the information inside the restaurant. There was a notice about aging for more than 12 hours and a waterless fryer, which made me look forward to the food even more.

For drinks, there were Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and cider. My wife prefers Coca-Cola, so she liked having a choice of cola brands.

What came with the cheddar cheese pork cutlet, and how did it taste?

My cheddar cheese pork cutlet came with kimchi, danmuji, and soup as basic sides. It also included soup, bread, and strawberry jam, so the spread felt generous.

I like foods with cheese or cream, so I finished the cheddar cheese pork cutlet. My wife, who does not enjoy rich food, only tasted one bite.

I started with the soup. My wife's set took a little longer, so we shared my soup, and she especially liked it. It had quite a lot of mushrooms and was warm and savory.

The salad had a refreshing dressing that went well with the pork cutlet. At the end, I ate the bread with strawberry jam.

Does the buckwheat soba set also include soup and bread?

My wife ordered the buckwheat soba and Western-style pork cutlet set. I am not particularly fond of buckwheat soba, but she likes it enough to choose it whenever it is on the menu.

I thought the set might not include soup and bread, but both were served. My wife finished the pork cutlet and buckwheat soba, then gave me her bread because she was full.

The buckwheat soba had ice in it, so it was cool. It is not in the photos, but wasabi was also served separately.

The Western-style pork cutlet had a tasty sauce. My wife said it seemed like care had gone into the meat, and she liked that it was not rich. We had different preferences about the cheese flavor, but each of us had a filling meal with the menu we chose.
