Rainy-morning café in Suwon: coffee, fruit cake & financiers at Diaz

Diaz Cake Boutique (디아즈케이크부띠끄) is a cake café on Nahyeseok Street in Ingye-dong, Suwon, near City Hall Station, that uses only 100% dairy fresh cream. On a rainy morning the writer stopped in for coffee, ordered the fruit fresh cream cake (11,900 won) and almond and caramel financiers, and watched the sky clear as the window seats filled with light over Nahyeseok Street. Verdict: Diaz Cake Boutique is an elegant cake café for fruit-packed cream cake and sweet-salty financiers with nutty coffee.

Beomgye pasta spot, window seat & seafood fettuccine: Two Find Peter

Two Find Peter Beomgye Branch is a dimly lit, casual Western restaurant on the 5th floor of Park Avenuel, near Exit 2 of Beomgye Station in Anyang, Gyeonggi. Two of us ordered a Caesar salad, seafood tomato fettuccine and corn pizza at a window seat; the food came out quickly, and the three dishes cost around ₩50,000 and left us pleasantly full. For a good-value pasta date in Beomgye, the corn pizza at Two Find Peter Beomgye Branch is well worth ordering.

Gogi-ri, Yongin shabu-kalguksu: no wait at 3pm on a weekend, Yun Ujae

Yun Ujae Shabu Kalguksu Gogidong Branch is a shabu-shabu kalguksu (beef hot pot with knife-cut noodles) restaurant in Gogi-ri, Suji-gu, Yongin, where sirloin, vegetables, house-made kalguksu noodles and fried rice cost ₩11,500 per person. On a weekend visit around 3pm there was no wait for shabu-kalguksu and seafood pajeon (₩16,000), and the chewy foot-kneaded house-made noodles and the Seoul-style geotjeori (fresh kimchi) stood out. Yun Ujae's portions are generous, making it a good-value Gogi-ri meal for hearty eaters.

Gwacheon duck BBQ with high ceilings & private rooms: Deo Chadol

Deo Chadol (더차돌) is a duck brisket restaurant near Seoul Grand Park in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi. After a full day at Seoul Grand Park, the blogger arrived just after 5pm on a weekend and ordered the Deo Chadol couple set: duck brisket, spicy marinated duck (ori jumulleok), doenjang (soybean paste) stew and self-fried rice. The high ceilings kept the room fresh and smoke-free, and separate private rooms are available. Deo Chadol is a satisfying spot for a full-course Korean BBQ dinner after a Seoul Grand Park outing.

Beomgye sashimi lunch by car with shiitake wasabi: Namhae Mulgogi

Namhae Mulgogi Anyang (남해물고기) is a sashimi restaurant near Beomgye Station in Anyang that serves an omakase-style aged sashimi course for ₩30,000–39,000 per person. The writer drove to Namhae Mulgogi at weekday opening time for the kelp-aged sashimi set, which ran from perilla seed porridge and mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) through aged sashimi with hairtail, futomaki, alcohol-steamed kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), yuringi (fried chicken in soy-vinegar sauce), grilled herring and shabu-shabu. Every course at Namhae Mulgogi paired so well with drinks that skipping alcohol to drive was the hardest part.

Suwon wood-fired chicken with ketchup-based sauce: Haenggung Jangjak

Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak (행궁장작한방통닭) is a wood-fired whole-chicken restaurant on Craft Street in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, that cures its chicken for 24 hours with herbal ingredients and roasts it whole over firewood. Arriving around 5:30 pm, near opening time, the writer ordered the traditional seasoned wood-fired chicken (₩25,000) with Terra beer: the sauce was unexpectedly ketchup-based but addictive, and the nurungji rice inside the chicken was sticky and chewy like yakbap (sweet sticky rice). Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is worth a visit when you want tender meat, sticky rice and bottom-of-the-plate nurungji in a single chicken-and-beer order.

Weekend work café in Gwacheon: oven-warmed hotteok babka, Minimale

Minimale Coffee Roaster Gwacheon Knowledge Information Town Branch is a bakery café on the ground floor of a building in Gwacheon Knowledge Information Town, Gyeonggi. The blogger stopped by on a weekend to work quietly and had a Helsinki Latte, an Americano made with the Balance beans (3,800 won) and a hotteok babka, a babka inspired by hotteok (Korean sweet pancake) that the café warms in the oven. Many breads and cakes had sold out by the late visit, which was a letdown. For a calm weekend spot to work or rest in Gwacheon, Minimale is a good fit.

Garden pizza and pasta restaurant in Haenggung-dong, Suwon: Low Five

Low Five is a casual Western restaurant serving pizza, pasta and rice dishes in Haenggung-dong, Suwon (Sinpung-ro 23beon-gil, Paldal-gu). On a weekday at opening time, a half-and-half pizza (₩26,000), shrimp spicy rigatoni (₩18,000) and avocado kimchi fried rice (₩14,000) all arrived together in under 15 minutes, and all three were good. With its secret-garden courtyard and dim lighting, Low Five feels like a date spot even at lunch, and since it usually has a wait, arriving at opening is recommended.

Suwon fortress-view café, fresh grapefruit ade: Caffeine Focus

Caffeine Focus is a fortress-view café filling a whole three-story building on high ground at the edge of Haenggung-dong in Suwon, known for its ciabatta and cheesecake. Instead of the crowded 3rd floor, the writer took a quiet 2nd-floor fortress-view seat and had a butter cream latte (₩7,000), a grapefruit ade made with fresh grapefruit (₩5,500) and a vanilla bean Basque cheesecake (₩8,000). Caffeine Focus is both a view spot and a dessert spot, with a soothing drink after a salty meal and a smooth cheesecake.

Jeong Jiyoung Coffee Roasters Lotte Premium Outlet Uiwang Branch is a roastery café from Haenggung-dong in Suwon that recently opened at Tasty Ground in Lotte Premium Outlet Uiwang, Gyeonggi, near Baegun Lake. Horangigul Gwacheon Branch (호랑이굴 과천점) is an izakaya-style offal hot pot restaurant on Saesulmak-gil in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi, near Government Complex Gwacheon Station. The thick, rich broth, made from vegetable stock, is the heart of Horangigul Gwacheon Branch, and regulars from its Beomgye days order it without a second thought.
