What is Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch?

Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda (고등어명품이되다) Suwon Branch is a grilled fish restaurant at 1731 Seobu-ro, Gwonseon-gu, Suwon, on the first floor, popular in west Suwon. It is open daily 10:40–21:30, last order at 20:30, and parking is super easy.

I love grilled fish~~ I already adore fish, but cooking it at home makes the house smell and grilling it is a hassle, so I mostly rely on grilled fish restaurants, haha. And I found an amazing one!!!!

The restaurant..? It is seriously huge, haha. The waits here are crazy too, and apparently it is a famous west Suwon spot!!!!!

Parking and getting to Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda from Suwon Station

There is so much parking that wherever you look, it is all parking. By public transport, you just take one bus from Suwon Station and you are there.

I came straight from work by public transit, and it was easy, just one bus from Suwon Station, haha.

The place is seriously huge! There is more space beyond the side where we sat! A company dinner for a big group would be totally doable.

Ordering tablets on the tables at Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda

Every table has a tablet like this, which is super convenient. Tablets seem to be the thing these days, haha.

How much is the Myeongpum set and what's in it?

The Myeongpum set (명품정식, a set meal) normally costs ₩32,000, but at the time of the visit it was discounted to ₩29,000. It comes with grilled mackerel, grilled Spanish mackerel, jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork) and mackerel sashimi.

I came wondering what to eat! And of course I saw the Myeongpum set on discount, so I could not miss it, haha. It is a super reasonable lineup, and as someone who loves lots of different side dishes, I thought this is the one, haha.

Self-serve bar with sikhye and vegetable side dishes at Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda

What's on the self-serve bar and side dishes?

The self-serve bar has mostly vegetable sides like sikhye (sweet rice drink), japchae (glass noodles), cucumber kimchi and young radish kimchi. Having sikhye was unusual, and it was not too sweet, so it was really good.

As a self-serve bar master, of course I headed there first. They even had sikhye?! From japchae to cucumber kimchi and young radish kimchi, mostly vegetable sides! Perfect with fish and meat, haha.

Basic side dishes served at Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda

They bring the basic side dishes to the table like this. It looks like you have to fetch the napa cabbage kimchi yourself! I like young radish kimchi, so I went with that, haha.

The sizzling flame-grilled spicy pork bulgogi came out too. It was so good that I would have been sad if it had not come out.

Oh, and they bring seaweed soup that you ladle into your own bowl, and it was seriously delicious, hahaha. If kids mix rice into it, I bet they would finish a whole bowl in no time, haha.

The full Myeongpum set: was the mackerel sashimi fresh?

The Myeongpum set fills the table with assorted side dishes, mackerel sashimi, grilled mackerel, grilled Spanish mackerel and spicy pork bulgogi. The mackerel sashimi was fresh and chewy with no fishy taste.

The whole table was packed, haha. My absolute favorite combo of fish plus meat. In a way, fish is meat too, so it is all the same meat category, haha.

Seriously amazing, haha. Look at this: both the mackerel and the Spanish mackerel are enormous, haha.

Large grilled mackerel and grilled Spanish mackerel

I especially love raw fish, and the mackerel sashimi was so fresh and chewy, haha. I badly wanted to order more. When mackerel sashimi is in bad shape it tastes really fishy, but this was so good! They gave several sauces to go with it, which made it even better.

But I like chogochujang (sweet chili vinegar sauce)! Is it like this at all grilled fish places these days? They give a separate tray for soy sauce and chogochujang, and the soy sauce comes in a packet(?), so you can add wasabi and dip, haha.

This sauce tasted like a doenjang (soybean paste) base mixed with minced garlic, and it was a total kick, haha.

Why is the grilled mackerel at Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda so juicy?

The grilled mackerel at Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda is cooked over a stone hearth, so it is clean-tasting yet shockingly juicy inside. Even with the sizzling heat still in it, the flesh came off the bones softly and easily.

Look closely at the GIF and the steam is really rising. Maybe because it is grilled in the hearth, it was grilled so cleanly and lightly. But seriously, wow...

The mackerel is shockingly, insanely juicy.... hahahaha Even with the sizzling heat still in it, the flesh peels off softly and the inside looks so tender... This mackerel is crazy, haha. Truly a premium mackerel, a thumbs-up mackerel, thank you~~~~

The Spanish mackerel is amazing too. I like it anyway, but the flesh was plump and even the skin was delicious, haha.

Why is the mackerel sashimi so good T_T I am losing it, hahaha. Why does it feel even fresher?

Fresh, chewy mackerel sashimi

The jeyuk bulgogi is amazing too. Spicy and sweet, a flavor no Korean could dislike. Apparently the tuna is really good too, hahahahahahahaha.

The mackerel,, why is it so pretty T_T? Look, can you see the juices inside, so moist?! It is seriously so good here T_T It was so shockingly delicious that today's post title is going to be "the mackerel is crazy" T_T

I picked the flesh off and put it on rice too. With cucumber kimchi it is heaven.

Earlier at the self-serve bar I saw nutty nurungji tea (scorched rice tea), so I brought some over and had a bowl. Nice and hot, so good.. With the nurungji tea I have to eat one more bowl of rice, T_T

Is Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda good for kids and family meals?

Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch has baby chairs, and there were many families and babies. Next to the cash register there is a fish tank and a hearth, and the waiting zone has a coffee machine.

Oh, the baby chairs are fully stocked here too.. It reminds me of our Tosil-i (the writer's baby)... Maybe that is why there were lots of families and babies, haha.

When I went to pay I saw a fish tank like this!! (The hearth is right next to it, so cool.) So fresh. It feels like the fish are looking at me, but I must be imagining it?

On my way out I saw the waiting zone again, and I have never seen a waiting zone this big, hahaha. The waits must be no joke... There is a coffee machine too, so you can rest comfortably. But I rinsed my mouth with sikhye instead. A perfect end to the meal, haha.

Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch: the verdict

  • Parking is so huge, totally convenient
  • The discounted Myeongpum set was great value
  • Self-serve bar sides were all tasty (the japchae is crazy good), and so was the seaweed soup
  • The grilled mackerel was crazy good. Hearth-grilled fish is usually strongly plain-tasting, but this one is soft and juicy
  • The mackerel sashimi seems even fresher because of the fish tank

The mackerel sashimi and jeyuk bulgogi are both delicious, so please try them all......... It is so easy to come with family too!!!!!!
