Korean restaurant in Gwacheon for a family bibimbap dinner: Bibisam

After a Saturday outing to Gwacheon National Science Museum, my family of three had dinner at Bibisam Gwacheon Main Branch (비비삼 과천본점). We ordered the bulgogi bibimbap and Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap sets, each served with tteokgalbi (Korean grilled meat patty).

Is the restaurant suitable for family meals or solo dining?

Because it is near the Government Complex Gwacheon, I also thought of it as a place for office workers' lunch or solo dining. We visited for dinner.

The restaurant was not very large, but it had several tables for two and four people. It had recently opened when we visited, so it felt pleasant. Since the two dishes came on separate trays as individual portions, it was easy for each of us to eat.

How do the self-bar and food pickup work?

You serve yourself as much soup and as many side dishes as you want from the self-bar. You collect your food at the pickup counter, then return your tray at the return counter after eating.

What came with the bibimbap sets, and how much were they?

We chose a set of Hwangdeung torim bulgogi bibimbap with Korean pork tteokgalbi, and another of Hwangdeung torim Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap with Korean beef tteokgalbi. These were the prices when we visited:

• Hwangdeung torim bulgogi bibimbap + Korean pork tteokgalbi set: ₩13,500
• Hwangdeung torim Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap + Korean beef tteokgalbi set: ₩15,500

Here, the rice is torim—rinsed with broth—then seasoned before serving. Unlike bibimbap made by mixing ingredients into plain white rice, the rice itself already had a base seasoning.

How did the Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap and tteokgalbi taste?

For the Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap, I mixed the torim rice evenly with namul (seasoned vegetables), then topped it with yukhoe (Korean beef tartare). The yukhoe had a hint of sweetness, which went well with the bibimbap.

The Korean beef tteokgalbi that came with it was mild and nutty. I especially remember the sweet-tangy sauce, and the fried egg added more richness.

Was the bulgogi bibimbap set filling?

The bulgogi bibimbap contained sweet and savory bulgogi, making for a filling meal. It was a set with Korean pork tteokgalbi, and the combination also seemed worth considering for a solo lunch.

What should you know when eating with children?

The two sets made a filling dinner for the three of us. However, because the rice is prepared torim-style, there was no plain rice. Our seven-year-old found it a little spicy but still ate it happily, so this is worth keeping in mind when visiting with children.

Was parking and public transit convenient?

There was a public parking lot immediately beside the restaurant, so parking was convenient for us. It is also close to Exit 11 of Government Complex Gwacheon Station. It is right beside Gwacheon Fire Station and Gwacheon Hillstate, which may help when finding it.
