Beongae Makchang (벙개막창) is a makchang (grilled intestines) and offal grill restaurant near Exit 3 of Hwajeong Station in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, with outdoor tables out front that suit an evening drink. On a rainy weekday evening at Beongae Makchang, the writer had 2 servings of pre-grilled pork makchang, a retro lunchbox, flying pork skin and slushy ice-cold beer. Thanks to its nutty dipping sauce and icy beer, Beongae Makchang is one of the top picks for a second-round team dinner near Hwajeong Station.

Ilsan grilled fish restaurant: self-serve rice tteokbokki, pork set

Hwadegeuro Gan Godeungeo Siksa Branch is a newly opened oven-grilled fish restaurant in the Wisi City area of Siksa-dong, Ilsan, in Goyang. The writer and a friend with a kid's palate ordered a mackerel set and a spicy pork stir-fry (jeyuk) set for a weekday lunch. They filled up on mackerel with no fishy smell, smoky jeyuk and rice tteokbokki (chewy rice cakes in spicy sauce) from the self-serve bar. With a clean dining room, a generous self-serve bar and a playroom, Hwadegeuro Gan Godeungeo Siksa Branch is an easy, comfortable spot for a meal.

Daecheon Beach café for an off-menu anbutter croissant: Green Brownie

Green Brownie Boryeong City Hall Branch is a fruit sandwich and brunch café in Boryeong, Chungnam, one minute from Boryeong City Hall and 15 minutes by car from Daecheon Beach. Before heading home to Ilsan after a one-night, two-day trip to Wonsando, the writer had an iced Americano, a mini anbutter croissant (red bean paste and butter) that had been taken off the menu but the owner made anyway, and a Dwaeji Bar macaron shaped like the Korean ice cream bar. Green Brownie stands out for its spacious, cool room and the owner's thoughtful service.

Yeonnam-dong café, levain cookie vs butter tteok: Butter & Shelter

Butter & Shelter Yeonnam is a converted-house dessert café in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo, Seoul, selling butter sandwich cookies, cakes and cookies from a display case. After a Saturday of eating and shopping in Hongdae, the writer and a friend shared a two-shot Americano (₩4,500) and tried the crème brûlée butter sand, a plain levain cookie and butter tteok (butter rice cake). The levain cookie was the favorite, while the butter tteok felt too dense. With its shady tree garden and elegant interior, Butter & Shelter Yeonnam suits a blind date or a date.

Boryeong fish shop: flounder and pork belly on Wonsando, Nokdo Susan

Nokdo Susan (녹도수산) is a sashimi shop inside the Daecheon Port fish market in Boryeong, Chungnam, that packs sashimi in styrofoam boxes lined with ice. On the way to Wonsando Natural Recreation Forest, the writer picked up 1.4kg of flounder for two from Nokdo Susan and ate it with pork belly at the forest lodge, and the flounder stayed fresh with no fishy smell despite a drive on a hot day. For travelers carrying sashimi from Daecheon Port to their lodging, Nokdo Susan's packing is reliable.

Chinese restaurant near Hongdae Playground: 4 dishes for two at Surim

Surim Sikdang Hongdae is a one-bowl Chinese and Asian restaurant on Wausan-ro 21-gil, near the Hongdae playground in Mapo, Seoul. Over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, two people shared tantanmen, shrimp wonton noodles, a dongpo pork rice bowl and palm-sized eggplant dumplings, and the dumplings ended up calling for a beer. Apart from the firmer-than-expected dongpo pork, every dish at Surim Sikdang Hongdae had its own character at reasonable prices, and with solo counter seats and a quiet back room, it is a solid one-bowl spot in Hongdae.

Yeonnam-dong restaurant, burrata fruit salad dinner: Hôtel de Couture

Hôtel de Couture (오뗄드꾸뜨) is a vintage, romantic Western restaurant in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul, about 500 m from Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station near the Gyeongui Line Forest Park. After a weekend outing in Hongdae, the blogger had an early dinner of a burrata seasonal fruit salad with the dressing on the side and a honeycomb seasonal fruit French toast, among diners who were roughly half Korean and half foreign. Hôtel de Couture is a good Yeonnam-dong pick for a cozy date or a special occasion.

Gyeongbokgung hanok BBQ: flower ribs, beef bone tteokguk, Gukbinkwan

Tonguidong Gukbinkwan is a corkage-free hanwoo (Korean beef) BBQ restaurant in a hanok down an alley near Exit 3 of Gyeongbokgung Station in Jongno, Seoul. After a stressful week, two friends arrived at opening time for a courtyard-view seat. They shared the premium hanwoo short rib assortment and finished with sagol tteokguk (beef bone broth rice cake soup). The flower ribs were the unanimous favorite of the assortment, and the clear, rich sagol tteokguk was just as satisfying.

Paju café with my sister: ₩28,000 unfrozen mango bingsu, Fruit Forest

Fruit Forest Paju Direct Store is a fruit dessert café on Dolgoji-gil near Simhaksan in Paju, Gyeonggi, occupying an entire building. The writer and her older sister stopped in during a gap between eyeglass-shop appointments for an iced Americano, a 28,000 won fresh mango bingsu (shaved ice) and a passion fruit purée, and both were amazed by the unfrozen fresh mango and soft milk snow ice. Having once sought out the Shilla Hotel's mango bingsu, the writer ranks Fruit Forest's fresh mango bingsu as the best of her life.

Brunch bistro in Seochon, Seoul: sea bream & sparkling, Teen Seoul

Teen Seoul is a bistro in its own detached building in Seochon, Jongno, Seoul, near Gyeongbokgung Station Exit 2. Over brunch with an older sister who came to cheer the writer up, they shared house sparkling Maison Castel, grilled sea bream with grilled yeolmu (young summer radish), grilled prawn linguine and raspberry sorbet, and from the 2nd floor and terrace at Teen Seoul you can see hanok roof tiles alongside city buildings. With house wines that include a sparkling, Teen Seoul is a great Seochon pick for a casual glass, a date or a blind date.

Paju Simhaksan Chinese restaurant: fiery chili pesto stone jjajang

Dolpanseok Jjamppong Paju Simhaksan Branch (돌판석짬뽕 파주심학산점) is a newly opened stone-plate Chinese restaurant on Dolgoji-gil in Paju, Gyeonggi, from a brand said to be famous in Busan and South Gyeongsang. The writer and her sister spotted the pa-kimchi (spring onion kimchi) at the self bar. They skipped jjamppong and ordered the Cheongyang chili pesto stone jjajang (black bean noodles) at medium spice, plus a side of handmade ttungbosha (menbosha-style shrimp toast). A staff member talked them out of the hottest level, yet even medium was genuinely spicy. The verdict: however well you handle heat, order the spice level humbly at Dolpanseok Jjamppong.

Solo kaisendon and engawa at an Ilsan sushi restaurant: Hwangje Sushi

Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch (황제초밥 일산본점) is a sushi and kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) restaurant on the first floor of SK M City at Western Dome in Ilsan, Goyang. On a third solo visit after a tiring weekend shift, the writer ordered the kaisendon and engawa (flatfish fin) 5 pieces, and the free sides of abalone-innard porridge, pickled vegetables, simmered fish and croquettes were just as satisfying. With its showy plating and free sides that change every visit, Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch is an Ilsan kaisendon spot worth coming back to.
