After days of heavy rain and gray skies, my body felt sluggish and my mood was kind of gloomy. On days like this, you need lunch at a place with a good atmosphere!! Bunko Dining Sadang is a Japanese restaurant and izakaya (Japanese pub), so you can go for lunch or dinner. I went and had an eel rice bowl, on a rainy day, and I really loved the mood!!

Where is Bunko Dining Sadang, and what are its hours?

Bunko Dining Sadang is about a 5-minute walk from Sadang Station Exit 11, on the 2nd floor of the Yoajeong building. The stairs are by the Dowon Hanjeongsik sign.

You can't see a big signboard, but it was very easy to find. Hours are 12:00–22:00 with a break time, and it's closed every Monday.

What is the atmosphere like at Bunko Dining Sadang?

The whole place had a toned-down, calm mood. The restaurant is bigger than I expected, and the tables are spaced widely apart, so it felt comfortable.

There are big windows throughout, so it felt open and airy!!

Lunchtime is quiet, which I liked, and in the evening it has a good izakaya mood for drinks. For a meetup before a wedding invitation, a date, a meal with your parents, or treating a special guest, this was a really great lunch spot with a lovely atmosphere!!!

Bunko Dining Sadang menu and prices

The signature dishes at Bunko Dining Sadang are the kaisendon (tuna and seafood rice bowl) at ₩25,000 and the hitsumabushi (eel rice bowl) at ₩45,000. There are also assorted sashimi, negitoro maki (tuna and scallion roll), and menchi katsu (minced meat cutlet).

A neat, tidy Japanese set meal

The kaisendon and hitsumabushi at Bunko Dining Sadang come as a full set on a rectangular tray. The look alone is crazy!!!

Every component was clean and really pretty. Moved by the eyes, then moved again by the taste!!!

What comes in the kaisendon set (₩25,000)?

The kaisendon at Bunko Dining Sadang is a Tokyo-style kaisendon topped with finely minced tuna and a variety of seafood. It was so pretty I almost hated to eat it!

There's a wide variety of ingredients, like fresh sashimi, octopus and roe!!

Side dishes served with the kaisendon set

On the side came a vegetable salad with Korean melon, two thick slices of sashimi, fried shrimp, cream cheese shuto (salted fish innards), clear soup, pickled vegetables, and roasted seaweed.

The minced tuna was so soft!! It melts gently and has a rich, nutty flavor overall. Together with the crunchy cucumber and chewy seafood, the textures were wonderfully varied, generous and harmonious!!

A spoonful of kaisendon seasoned with soy sauce

You season it with the soy sauce, and it isn't salty. The rice is moist yet slightly firm, with a great texture, so it felt fresh and tasty like eating a salad!! The kaisendon set is quite a big portion, but I think it would be really good even when you're on a diet!! You can also pour sea bream broth over it at the end!

Is the hitsumabushi set (₩45,000) good for boyangsik (summer stamina food)?

The hitsumabushi at Bunko Dining Sadang is an eel rice bowl with a whole eel, and I strongly recommend it as boyangsik (stamina food) for Chobok, Jungbok and Malbok, the three hottest days of summer!! The salad, fried shrimp, cheese cream shuto and pickled vegetables are the same as in the kaisendon set, with sea bream broth and some other ingredients added.

A whole eel is in there!! The portion is way bigger than it looks in photos. And the sauce isn't salty, it's clean-tasting and really delicious!! The texture is chewy yet tender, too. I'd been feeling really drained and tired lately, and as a stamina and healthy meal, this was a total top-tier lunch!!!

The kicker: pour sea bream broth over the hitsumabushi

Pouring the sea bream broth over the rice is the real kicker of the hitsumabushi at Bunko Dining Sadang!!! The broth is super rich, refreshing and really delicious!!! It's basically a gukbap (rice soup) specialist, haha. It went so well with the fluffy rice, and a spoonful of rice topped with a piece of eel was the best combination!!!!

Who would I recommend Bunko Dining Sadang to?

Lunch at Bunko Dining Sadang, a Japanese restaurant with a lovely atmosphere, was really delicious!!! With the eel rice bowl and kaisendon, I genuinely felt treated. If you're looking for a place for a wedding-invitation meetup, a meal with your parents, a date, or a great Sadang spot for a blind date and drinks, I strongly recommend Bunko Dining Sadang!!!
