Set menu tonkatsu kimchi nabe udon and mini curry: Gatjidong Busan

My husband said he wanted tonkatsu, so we headed to Gatjidong, close to Oncheonjang Station. Gatjidong is the kind of place where you can get a hearty, satisfying meal. :)

This Oncheonjang restaurant, Gatjidong, has a parking lot right next to the building, so it's convenient even if you drive. There's a barrier gate down, but calling the restaurant from the entrance gets it opened for you.

We came during lunchtime and the lot was already full, so we used the public parking lot north of Oncheonjang Station instead. It's only about a 5-minute walk from there, so totally fine! :)

Gatjidong sits right on the corner of a main road, so it's easy to spot. The yellow sign lists all my favorite things — tonkatsu, salmon, udon, rice bowls, curry. 💛

Interior — good for solo dining or groups

This Oncheonjang restaurant, Gatjidong, has bar seating too, so it's good for solo diners. There are various 2-seat and 4-seat tables, making it good for group meals as well as couple visits like ours.

The restrooms are separated by gender, which is convenient, and families visiting with young children can use the baby chairs. 👍🏻

Beside each table there are utensils, forks, napkins, knives and chopsticks, and you order through the tablet on the table and pay right there. If paying with cash, you just pay at the counter. :)

What's on the self-serve bar?

There's also a self-serve bar, and I noticed baby forks and baby spoons prepared for families visiting with little ones. It's a really good place to visit with kids, since there are also plenty of menu items kids love.

The self-serve bar has ✔️kimchi ✔️pickled radish ✔️pickled chili ✔️ginger ✔️rakkyo. There's also ✔️rice ✔️broth ✔️soup. Having rice provided is such a bonus. Various sauces, toothpicks, scissors, ladles, tongs, small plates and aprons are all available — just grab what you need.

And the set menu lets you pick a main dish plus a mini meal item, which is great value. Whenever we come, we always pick from the set menu. ✌🏻

The kids' service includes ✔️kids' seaweed ✔️kids' furikake rice ✔️kids' vitamins. Gatjidong clearly thinks about young customers, which explains why so many families come here.

They also had a receipt review event running — after getting your receipt, leave a review with a food photo and you can get a can of soda or 3 vegetable croquettes for free.

At this Oncheonjang restaurant, Gatjidong, we of course ordered from the set menu — great for trying multiple dishes at once. Haha. We ordered ✔️half-and-half tonkatsu + mini soba and ✔️tonkatsu kimchi nabe udon + mini curry.

Soup and side dishes brought from the self-serve bar. You just take as much as you'll eat. I completely love Gatjidong's soup too — it's thick, so sprinkling a ton of pepper on it makes it amazing. 🩷 A perfect appetizer.

Cheese tonkatsu, one minute after the hourglass runs out

My husband's half-and-half tonkatsu and mini soba. I always notice this when ordering — the 'mini' is never really mini. It comes out so generously that you end up stuffed by the end. Still, it's delicious, so you never leave any behind. :)

One piece of classic Western-style tonkatsu and one piece of cheese tonkatsu. For the cheese tonkatsu, they give you an hourglass and tell you to eat it once the minute runs out — apparently that's when the cheese stretches the most.

The cheese inside the cheese tonkatsu was so soft and chewy, really delicious. I only meant to try one piece of my husband's, but when I said how good the cheese was, he told me to have another, so I ended up eating two big pieces. Haha.

The soba also had the right amount of grated radish, scallion and wasabi mixed in — delicious. There's really no better side to eat alongside tonkatsu than soba. 😸

Tonkatsu kimchi nabe udon — how big is the portion?

My tonkatsu kimchi nabe udon! The bowl is huge. The portion is massive too. I probably looked like someone training for a food competition. Haha.

The kimchi itself is delicious, so it pairs perfectly with the tonkatsu, and the udon broth soaks in beautifully too — so tasty. You have to eat the tonkatsu once it's softened a bit, since it's sitting in the broth and gets really hot. :)

There's a whole piece of tonkatsu in there, plenty of udon noodles, and lots of kimchi too, so every bite was delicious without exception. Turns out there was a lot of beef brisket mixed in as well. Absolutely top-tier. 👍🏻

I'm a curry lover, so — kimchi nabe and curry combined?! Delicious. It's a mild, sweet curry flavor that goes really well with the kimchi nabe.

There's a ton of beef brisket inside the curry too. Gatjidong really doesn't skimp on ingredients!!

At this Oncheonjang restaurant, Gatjidong, we had a completely filling, delicious meal. Our stomachs, full and satisfied, cleared every last bite. Amazing. 😸
