Limited-edition abalone jjambbong at Gupo Jjambbong, Busan restaurant

In short

Gupo Jjambbong Gupo Main Branch is a 15-year-old Chinese restaurant near Gupo Market in Buk-gu, Busan, known for its herbal-medicine broth. Ordering the daily-limited-to-10-bowls premium galbi abalone jjambbong (spicy seafood noodle soup), seafood jjajang platter, and half-and-half sweet and sour pork for two, the noodles were handmade and the pork stayed crispy outside and juicy inside, with the restaurant filling up and a wait forming soon after an 11:30am weekend arrival. This is the place to return to whenever you want Chinese food that won't upset your stomach.

I fell for this place after eating here with a friend last time, so I went back again — Gupo Jjambbong Gupo Main Branch, a Gupo Market favorite in Busan.

This place has been a Gupo institution for 15 years, so anyone in the know already knows it. It uses an herbal medicine broth and Cordyceps militaris mushroom noodles, so my stomach felt completely fine after eating the jjambbong (spicy seafood noodle soup) — I really recommend it whenever you need to cure a hangover or are craving Chinese food 🤍

Now let's get right into my honest review of Gupo Jjambbong ⬇️

Getting there from Gumyeong Station, Deokcheon, Gupo, and parking

Gupo Jjambbong Gupo Main Branch, a Gupo Market favorite in Busan, is very easy to reach from Exit 4 of Gumyeong Station, or from Deokcheon or Gupo. If you drive, there's a dedicated lot right next to the building with room for about 4 cars, and if that's full, roadside parking beside the shop is allowed without enforcement until 1:30pm.

Inside, the space has a clean wood-tone interior with yellow and blue accents, and the seating is mostly 4-person tables, with bar seating great for solo diners.

There are also high chairs and group seating, so it looked like a great spot for family meals out or work dinners.

The self-serve bar, the etiquette zone, and Cordyceps militaris tea

On one side there's a self-serve bar where you can freely help yourself to more onion and pickled radish if you run out,

and on the other side there's an etiquette zone that shows real thoughtfulness toward guests — aprons, hair ties, dental floss, and even apple cider vinegar water to help manage blood sugar after the meal.

The water here isn't just plain water either — it's Cordyceps militaris tea, brewed from the mushroom that's said to help with anti-aging, blood vessel health, liver function, and managing diabetes and blood pressure. I expected mushroom tea to taste bad, but I was surprised at how delicious it was, just like regular barley tea 🤍

Gupo Jjambbong menu and review event

The menu at this Gupo Market favorite ranges from affordable course meals to various types of jjambbong including premium galbi abalone jjambbong and octopus abalone jjambbong, plus jjajang (black bean noodles), sweet and sour pork, eggplant dumplings, and sweet rice cake eggplant fritters — and they were running a Naver receipt review event too, offering 4 fried dumplings for one review, or stir-fried egg with chives if two people reviewed together ✨

There were two of us, so we ordered the premium galbi abalone jjambbong, seafood jjajang platter, and half-and-half sweet and sour pork ✔️

So how does the daily-limited-to-10-bowls premium galbi abalone jjambbong taste?

First up is the visually stunning premium galbi abalone jjambbong, sold only 10 bowls a day.

It's supposedly the world's first sweet potato stem jjambbong made with an herbal medicine broth base, and with a whole big rib and a whole fresh abalone piled on top, the visual alone was amazing 🤍

The handmade noodles are really chewy and soft, and paired with the tender rib meat, it left my stomach feeling completely comfortable afterward — so good ㅠㅠ 🤍

The broth, simmered with domestic medicinal herbs, is light with no greasiness and has a deep, rich umami flavor. It's packed with rib meat and seafood inside, so it's fun to eat them together.

Seafood jjajang platter — the fun of mixing in the egg yolk

True to its name, the seafood jjajang platter comes loaded with seafood ~

Anyone who dumps a ton of red pepper flakes on their jjajang? Me!! haha

The seafood jjajang platter, generously packed with plump seafood, had an explosive savory flavor,

and popping the egg yolk and mixing it with the chewy noodles doubles the nuttiness! The chewy texture of the seafood and the sweet-yet-deep jjajang sauce come together perfectly — it's a dish that makes you scrape up every last bit of sauce :)

Half-and-half sweet and sour pork — why even a dipping-sauce person poured it on

If you want to enjoy both classic and Sichuan-style sweet and sour pork at once, the half-and-half option is a must-try, delivering both value and flavor 🤍

Half-and-half sweet and sour pork split into classic and Sichuan styles

The staff said pouring the sauce over tastes even better, so even though I'm usually a dipping person, today I poured it on!!

Crispy outside, juicy inside — the textbook definition. The meat inside the batter is thick and satisfying to bite into.

Spicy Sichuan-style sweet and sour pork

The Sichuan sweet and sour pork is a little spicy, and eating it with cabbage tames the heat nicely — very addictive!!

Weekend morning visit — how was the wait?

Jjajang and sweet and sour pork = ❤️ Last time I visited I ordered the same menu, but since the premium jjambbong was sold out, I got the octopus abalone jjambbong instead — and that was really delicious too!! Everything here is good, honestly.

I visited around 11:30am on a weekend, and not long after we got in, the place was full and a wait line had formed. A true hot spot!!
