Eonyang, Ulsan café while heavily pregnant: lemon smoothie at MUG

It's vacation season and I really wanted to travel somewhere far, but being heavily pregnant on top of a heatwave made a long trip feel like too much. So instead of going far, I decided to spend this vacation nearby — good dessert, a pretty space, a relaxed afternoon. That's how I ended up at MUG in Eonyang, Ulsan :)
A large café like this in Eonyang, Ulsan?
MUG is a large complex cultural space in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan, and the atmosphere felt distinct from a typical café. I heard the building was made using charred wood salvaged from a site that survived a major wildfire. Maybe that's why the building itself had such a unique feel — it wasn't just a café for coffee and dessert, but a space that was genuinely fun to explore.

There's a large dedicated parking lot, so no worries about parking!
Right as you walk in the door, there's a gallery exhibition space set up inside — so it's got that Ulsan gallery-café feel where you can enjoy art and coffee together, haha!
An interior with unusually high ceilings
MUG is entirely single-story, but the ceilings are extremely high and the space is slightly rounded, with tables set up around the glass windows. Even on a weekday, with the hot weather and vacation season, apparently a lot of people had the same idea as us, haha — the place was completely packed, not a seat free.
With so many people around, it was pretty noisy.
How was the outdoor space everyone talks about?
MUG's other charm is its outdoor space.
The five zelkova trees apparently survived the major wildfire. Aren't they gorgeous?! This space was really pretty and peaceful, but the day we visited the heatwave was so intense we couldn't stay outside long 😂 It's the kind of place I'd love to properly enjoy once the weather cools down a bit. I heard there's a bubble event in the outdoor space on weekends, so it seems like a good spot to bring kids or for a date.
What's on the menu at this Eonyang, Ulsan bakery café?
MUG also had a wide range of bakery items. The one that stood out most was the cinnamon roll!
There are several kinds of cream cheese cinnamon rolls — apple, blueberry, lemon and more — and apparently it's MUG's signature bakery item. But of all days, when I visited, the cinnamon rolls had all sold out. 🥲 I was about to leave disappointed, but right as I was heading out I spotted a fresh batch coming out! In the end I didn't get to taste one, just took a lot of photos, haha.

The rule is one drink per person. We ordered the signature meok lemon smoothie and the strawberry yogurt smoothie!
What did I end up ordering?
We ordered mostly MUG's signature items that day: meok lemon smoothie + strawberry yogurt smoothie + lamington cake.
First, the meok lemon smoothie has a refreshingly tart lemon flavor just like the name suggests, which made it great for the hot weather. In heatwave days like these, a cold, tangy drink really is the best, haha.
The strawberry yogurt smoothie was a sweet-tart combo of strawberry and yogurt — reliably delicious and easy to enjoy. Paired with the sweet dessert, I felt like I'd picked well on drinks.
The lamington cake had thin, soft sponge layered with strawberry jam and coated with chocolate and shredded coconut on the outside — it was seriously delicious! @♡@ Definitely recommend this one~~
Worth putting on your list of things to do in Eonyang?
This vacation, instead of traveling far in the heatwave, I spent the time nearby enjoying good dessert and drinks. MUG is fairly large in scale and the space itself is distinctive, so it should suit anyone looking for something a bit different from a typical café. If you're after a large café in Ulsan, an offbeat café where you can enjoy an exhibition alongside coffee, or a quiet date spot in Eonyang, it's worth a visit.
For a hot summer when traveling far feels like too much and you just want to rest nearby with something good to eat, this place worked well! Next time, I want to come back when the weather is a bit cooler and finally try that signature cinnamon roll. 🤎
