Busan milmyeon restaurant, 5-minute wait at lunch peak: Somunnan Gaya

Somunnan Gaya Milmyeon Busan City Hall Branch is a milmyeon (Busan wheat cold noodle) restaurant in Yeonje, Busan, that has made its own noodles for 25 years. On a peak-season August weekday at 12:30, the wait at Somunnan Gaya Milmyeon was 5 minutes, and the mul milmyeon, bibim milmyeon and potato dumplings arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. Though a mul milmyeon fan, the writer found the bibim milmyeon with its special sauce plus 8 potato dumplings for 5,000 won the best combination.

Vegan rice bakery in Sajik-dong, Busan: Ssalppang Man's chestnut loaf

Ssalppang Man (쌀빵맨) is a vegan bakery on Sajikbuk-ro in Dongnae-gu, Busan, that bakes with 100% Korean-grown rice flour and no eggs, milk, butter or refined white sugar, using soy milk and vegan butter instead. A takeout order of the Gongju chestnut rice loaf, Choco Boseul-i and a sweet red bean bun showed that Ssalppang Man's chestnut loaf is so chewy and soft it is hard to believe it is made from rice flour. Verdict: Ssalppang Man is a bakery worth recommending to anyone who can't give up bread while dieting.

Seomyeon, Busan esthetics: level-10 belly slimming for bloating, Aeri

Aeri Seomyeon Waxing Esthetics is a waxing, skincare and slimming studio on the 5th floor of PK Building, a 10-minute walk from Exit 6 of Seomyeon Station in Busan. On this visit I had the 40-minute abdominal slimming program at the highest intensity, level 10, lying in a private one-person room watching Netflix while I felt my abdominal muscles contract and relax. Verdict: the lower-belly bloating and heaviness eased noticeably after one session, so I've decided to go to Aeri Seomyeon Waxing Esthetics once a week.

Haeundae café with sofa seats and 3 summer granitas: Geumsong Deokmi

Geumsong Deokmi Haeridan-gil Branch is a dessert café on the second floor of a red-brick building on Haeridan-gil in Haeundae, Busan. Its black-and-ivory interior has sofa seats and outdoor seating, making it easy to stay a while. From the summer menu of mango, lemon and Korean melon (chamoe) granitas, the mango granita paired very sweet mango with a cold sorbet base that cut through the heat. Geumsong Deokmi's desserts change every season, which is reason enough to keep coming back.

House-made jambon sandwich at Jeonpo brunch spot Odd Bird Oliver

Odd Bird Oliver is a brunch and pasta restaurant near Jeonpo Station Exit 4 in Busanjin, Busan. The writer ordered a Bismarck focaccia sandwich with house-made jambon, ricotta and a poached egg, a small summer carrot soup and bottarga aglio e olio. The thin, tender jambon made it the best sandwich the writer had eaten lately, and the bottarga pasta wasn't salty. Verdict: the open kitchen inspires trust in hygiene, and the mild seasoning makes Odd Bird Oliver a good pick for family meals with kids or dates.

Daeyeon-dong Korean BBQ with icy yeolmu radish noodles: Donnamu Jip

Donnamu Jip is a newly opened, old-school style pork belly restaurant in Daeyeon-dong, Nam-gu, Busan, specialising in Jirisan pork belly. Two people ordered one 360g plate of Jirisan pork belly, yeolmu-mari guksu (cold noodles in young radish kimchi broth) and instant rice, with complimentary sides of muk-sabal (chilled acorn jelly soup), Korean-made yeolmu kimchi, potatoes and shiitake mushrooms for the grill. On a hot day the icy yeolmu noodles at Donnamu Jip cut through the pork fat so well that the meal kept going, making it a pork belly spot worth trying for both group dinners and eating alone.

CORR is a financier-focused dessert café on Yeogo-ro in Sajik-dong, Dongnae-gu, Busan. The ground floor of CORR has two private meeting rooms that make group gatherings easy, and we ordered the fig financier, the plain financier and a 100% fresh-pressed watermelon juice, checking the financiers' crisp-outside, moist-inside cross-section. If you love financiers or need a quiet room for a group meeting, CORR in Sajik-dong is the right pick.

Hwamyeong-dong esthetic for facial asymmetry: RF lifting at Bemontes

Bemontes Esthetic is a one-on-one skin care shop on Hwamyeongsindosi-ro in Hwamyeong-dong, Buk-gu, Busan. The director's omakase V-line contour treatment ran 90 minutes and covered scalp and trapezius release, asymmetry massage, radiofrequency lifting, and a serum and mask finish for facial asymmetry and a sagging deep cheek. After one session at Bemontes Esthetic the asymmetry evened out and the face line looked sharper — more satisfying than past dermatology lifting.
