Gimpo spicy rib stew with 3 heat levels for date night: Jin Galmaegal
In short
Jin Galmaegal Pungmu Branch is a spicy braised pork back rib restaurant on the ground floor of an apartment shopping block in Pungmu-dong, Gimpo, Gyeonggi, serving one dish only. A couple who love spicy food ordered the small basin (for 2) at 32,000 won on heat level 3, adding a soft tofu (sundubu) side, steamed egg and soju, and found thick meat on both sides of every rib bone. Even level 3 lands at a tasty, manageable heat, so it is worth a try if you trust your spice tolerance.

Hi, this is Mimi! :D My husband and I are seriously huge fans of spicy food. So when I'm craving something spicy, this is the Pungmu-dong Korean restaurant that comes to mind. Here's my review of the spicy braised ribs, packed with real meat!
Where is Jin Galmaegal Pungmu Branch, and where do you park?
Jin Galmaegal Pungmu Branch is on the first floor of a commercial building in front of an apartment complex at 19 Pungmu-ro 96beon-gil, Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. It's open daily 17:00–22:30, closed every Monday, and does takeout and delivery too.

There's a dedicated lot behind the building, but I heard it's pretty small. We just played it safe and used the nearby No Brand parking lot instead — only ₩1,000 for 30 minutes, so no burden at all.
What the Jin Galmaegal dining room looks like
Walk inside and you'll see cozy round tables. You know that pub-like vibe that just makes drinking taste even better?
The floors and dishware were spotless throughout, no stickiness anywhere. Even though it was early evening on a weekday, there were already quite a few customers having a drink, maybe just off work. That neighborhood-hideout feeling of a Pungmu-dong eatery — somehow it felt like the drinks were going to flow smoothly tonight.
Spicy braised pork back ribs: price and the 3 heat levels

Jin Galmaegal Pungmu Branch has one main menu item, spicy pork back rib stew, in sizes from small (2 people) to large (3 people). At ₩32,000 for the 2-person size, that's pretty reasonable given today's dining prices.
When ordering, you can pick from 3 spice levels. Since my husband and I are pretty confident about heat, we went straight for level 3, the buldak (fire chicken) level.

After ordering, the side dishes came out: baek-kimchi (white kimchi), kkakdugi (radish kimchi), cabbage salad, seasoned lettuce, and stir-fried potatoes — all neat and clean.
How much meat is in the basin of ribs?

The spicy rib stew came out so full it nearly overflowed the bowl. Honestly, I've been to plenty of spicy rib stew places where you find barely a few rib bones and mostly vegetables, so much so I'd wonder if it was a rib stew or a vegetable stew.

So I'd stopped ordering spicy rib stew for a while, but Jin Galmaegal really is different — I was genuinely impressed.

First off, the bowl was packed full of back ribs.

Look at the size of the meat, seriously amazing. Usually only one side of the bone has a thin layer of meat, but here thick meat clings to both sides of every rib bone. There's so much to eat, gnawing on the bones was genuinely fun.

It was braised so thoroughly that just a light touch with chopsticks separated the meat from the bone easily, making it easy to eat too.

Zero toughness, it just melts tender in your mouth.

Why the soft tofu (sundubu) side is a must-order
And here's a genuine tip: Jin Galmaegal's signature sundubu (soft tofu) topping (₩3,000) is not optional, it's mandatory.

After finishing all the solid bits, simmer the sundubu in the rich remaining broth and mix it with rice. The satisfying umami will make you sigh with pleasure, no joke.

The steamed egg we ordered as a side was also seasoned just right, perfect for scooping a spoonful whenever things got too spicy.

Seeing a side dish look this insanely good and not ordering soju? I was taught that's just disrespectful to the food. So we immediately ordered a new bottle and drank it up nicely, haha.
We were a little nervous level 3 would be way too spicy, but for us it turned out just pleasantly spicy, right on point. Of course, if you're sensitive to spice, I'd recommend going a level or two lower.
Is Jin Galmaegal Pungmu Branch worth a visit?

Number one, hands down, among all the spicy rib stews I've had recently, haha! From the amount of meat, to the price point, to the addictive spicy sauce, this Pungmu-dong restaurant doesn't fall short anywhere. We enjoyed it so much that on the way home, my husband said we should order it for delivery next time, lol.
This place has that magical charm that makes you want to call for soju, so if you're looking for a stress-busting Korean restaurant in Pungmu-dong, I strongly recommend giving it a visit.
