Kid-friendly hanok café in Hongcheon with pond and waterwheel: Gil151

I went looking for a nice-vibe café in Hongcheon and ended up at Gil151! There are so many pretty cafés these days, but when you actually try to visit with a kid, parking, space, and atmosphere all become things you have to worry about. Gil151 had the pretty hanok (traditional Korean house) atmosphere plus a big outdoor space, so it was great for spending relaxed time as a family.

What caught my eye first from the entrance was the hanok building itself — surrounded by mountains and trees, it felt totally different from a city café. 🌳 There were plenty of photo spots and the drinks and desserts were unique, so it also worked well as a stop on a Hongcheon drive. Here's my detailed review of Gil151 in Hongcheon. :)

Is parking easy? Big outdoor lot right in front

When you arrive at the café, the first thing you see is a wide outdoor parking lot. It's right in front of the café, so there's no need to walk far after parking.

The first thing that caught my eye at Gil151 was, of course, the hanok building. Rather than feeling like a typical new large-scale café, the exterior kept the atmosphere of a traditional Korean hanok, which made it much more memorable. The tiled roof and wooden pillars matched the surrounding natural scenery so well, and on a sunny day even a plain shot of the building came out pretty. Since the area around the café is nature rather than crowded shops or roads, the charm of the hanok stood out even more.

Gil151 hours and last order

When I visited, the hours posted at the entrance were OPEN 10:00 / CLOSE 18:30 / Last Order 18:00. It's not a café that stays open late into the evening, so if you're planning a late-afternoon visit, it's worth checking the last order time. Hours may change later, so I'd recommend double-checking on Naver Place before you go. :)

Can I bring my kid? Care Kids Zone

Since I have a child, this really caught my eye — right from the entrance, Gil151 is marked as a CARE KIDS ZONE. It's not a no-kids zone; kids can come, but it's a space where the guardian actively watches over the child while using it.

According to the notice, there are stairs, railings, and other elements inside and outside the café that could cause injury, and since the outdoor space is large, guardians need to keep a close eye on kids. It also noted that guardians should be careful to avoid inconveniencing other guests, damaging fixtures or landscaping, or causing safety incidents involving hot drinks. It's great that you can bring kids, but it's not a kids-café concept where children roam freely, so this is worth keeping in mind.

When I go to cafés with my child, I usually check first whether it's a no-kids zone or not, so having the rules clearly posted at the entrance was actually convenient. It felt like a place where families with kids and other guests wanting a quiet café experience could both be comfortable if everyone's considerate. :)

Menu lineup — signatures with names unlike anywhere else

There was a big menu board by the counter, so I took my time looking it over. Beyond the usual coffee menu, Gil151 had a variety of its own signature drinks.

The menu names alone feel completely different from a regular café, right? Haha. It seemed like they'd made the names as poetic as the hanok-café concept itself. Coffee options included Espresso ₩6,000, Americano ₩6,000, Café Latte ₩6,500, along with things like Belgian Café Mocha and Tip Caramel Latte. There was also a good range of non-coffee options, ades, smoothies, and traditional teas, plus leaf and branch teas. Menus like Donguibogam ssanghwacha (herbal tonic tea), rich cinnamon tea, and spicy ginger tea fit the hanok atmosphere well and seemed nice to visit with parents.

Bakery case

Besides drinks, there was also a bakery selection. Several kinds of bread were laid out in the display case, kept neatly behind a clear partition. There were pastries and chocolate breads — good options to pair with coffee. If you feel like a drink alone isn't quite enough, ordering a bread to go with it is a good move. It also seemed like a good spot to stop after lunch for coffee and dessert, or to drop by in that in-between afternoon hour for bakery items and a drink.

Indoor seating and the view outside

The interior was bigger than expected, with a variety of seating — regular tables as well as chairs with wide backrests, so you could pick a seat to match your taste. Best of all, the large windows in several spots let in great light, and the greenery and hanok scenery outside meant it never felt cramped. 🌿 The overall wood-tone décor gave it a warm, comfortable feel, and with plenty of seating it seemed like a good place to visit with family or parents.

Naver receipt review event and dutch portions

While waiting for the drinks, I looked around the store! Near the counter there was a notice about a Naver MY PLACE receipt review event. At the time of my visit, writing a Naver receipt review earned you a benefit worth up to ₩4,500. You could choose one of the 'dutch portion' options — there were three: Kkotgil (fruit) / Solgil (nutty) / Nungil (decaf). If you're someone who writes Naver reviews often, this kind of event is worth keeping an eye on.

There was also a microwave set up on one side, with a sign that read, 'Please microwave only the Mont Blanc, chestnut pastry, or Tissue Bread for 30 seconds :)'. It seemed to be guidance so you could warm those particular breads slightly. These small notes were nice, since even with an unfamiliar menu item you could tell how to enjoy it best.

How the drinks looked and how to eat them

And finally, our order arrived! The moment it hit the table, my first thought was, 'I need to photograph this first.' 😂 Instead of a plain café drink, it was styled like a dessert, and it looked really pretty. In particular, the drink topped with a pink rose shape looked like an actual flower had been placed on top, which really caught my eye. Underneath was a crunchy grain-like topping that matched the colors nicely and photographed beautifully. The drink next to it had black and brown crumble piled on top with a small flower decoration in the center, giving off Gil151's own distinct vibe. Anyone who likes taking photos for social media or blogging will probably grab their camera the second the menu arrives. 📸

Espresso was served separately so you could pour it in to taste. First I took photos of the pretty presentation, then removed the flower and poured the espresso in little by little. Along with the drink, they also explained how to enjoy it, so even as a first-timer it wasn't confusing. Following the instructions made it more fun to eat, and it felt a bit more special than a typical affogato. If you're visiting with others, I'd recommend ordering different signature drinks each and sharing a taste!

Flower Blooming in the Mud · Around the Time Camellias Bloom

☕ Flower Blooming in the Mud — with a name that unique, I had to try it. On top was a generous pile of crumble meant to evoke soil. 🖤🤎 Taking a big spoonful, the soft cream and crunchy crumble together gave a really nice texture. It was sweet yet nutty, so it felt like eating a dessert, and mixing in the coffee underneath added a sweet-bitter note that made it even better.

🌺 Around the Time Camellias Bloom — an affogato-style drink where you pour espresso in yourself. The strong espresso soaking into the smooth gelato gave a perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness.

Chocolate ganache cake

For chocolate lovers, there was also a ganache cake that's hard to miss! Smooth, rich chocolate ganache covered the top, with chocolate cream and cookie pieces added on top for a look that's sweetness from head to toe 🤎. One bite gave rich chocolate sweetness with a dense, fudgy texture, and the crumble bits mixed in kept the texture from feeling one-note. If you like sweet desserts, it's a great pairing with coffee — especially with something bitter like an Americano or espresso. ☕️🍫

Outdoor space — pond and waterwheel

Personally, Gil151 felt less like a place where you just drink a coffee inside and leave, and more like a spot to take in the surrounding scenery and hanok atmosphere together. From the parking lot on, it's surrounded by mountains, and with the wide outdoor space, it was easy to feel Hongcheon's own relaxed pace. On a nice-weather day it's a great backdrop for photos, with the hanok building, blue sky, and green trees together. ☁

Hongcheon in particular sees a lot of people traveling or driving through by car, and if you're looking for a good spot to stop for a coffee break along the way, Gil151 is a solid choice. It has a totally different atmosphere from a crowded downtown café, so it felt like a proper little rest stop.

On one side of the pond there was also a large waterwheel. It's not something you see often at cafés these days, so it matched the hanok atmosphere really well. With water flowing around the waterwheel and even a fountain running, it looked like a fun thing for kids to watch too.

Before leaving, I also took part in the Naver receipt review event. Writing a review got me a dutch portion, which came in a cute little round bottle. Haha. I brought one home like this! Overall — a Hongcheon café good for lingering like a day trip

Gil151 in Hongcheon was a café where you could enjoy the calm hanok atmosphere together with nature. 🌿

From the wide parking lot to the hanok building, the green lawn yard, the pond, the fountain, and the waterwheel, there was so much to see that it felt more like a leisurely little outing than just a quick coffee run.

The interior also kept the hanok's exposed rafters and wooden pillars, which gave it a great atmosphere, and I liked being able to enjoy a drink while looking out at the scenery through the large windows.

From signature drinks to affogato, ganache cake, and pastries, there was a good variety of desserts, which also made it easy to share. ☕️🍰

Being run as a Care Kids Zone, so you can visit with your child, was another plus. That said, there are spots like the pond and stairs to be careful of, so if you're visiting with a kid, please make sure a guardian stays close by!

For a family outing with parents, a Hongcheon café worth taking kids to, or a stop on a date or drive, Gil151 in Hongcheon was a place well worth visiting. 🤎
