Weekend lunch in Dongseong-ro: bulgogi yeolmu bibimbap at Cafe Dongi

In short

Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch is a Korean set-meal restaurant on Dongseong-ro 3-gil in Jung-gu, Daegu, where a self-serve bar offers as many fried eggs, five-grain rice, barley gangjeong (puffed barley candy) and seaweed as you want. For lunch before a weekend movie, the order was bulgogi yeolmu bibimbap (rice bowl with young radish greens), a stir-fried baby octopus set and nuruk-aged tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork). Even arriving early, only one table was left — a busy, good-value spot in Daegu.

Did I finally get back to Dongseong-ro in Daegu after a long while last week? It brought back memories of visiting a close friend who lived alone there back in college haha. Back then and now, Dongseong-ro is still buzzing with great restaurants and trendy cafés.

Where is Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch, and where can you park?

Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch is a 5-10 minute walk from Exit 10 of Banwoldang Station. If you're taking the bus, it's also close to 2.28 Park. We had a solid lunch here before heading off to watch Odyssey!

There's no dedicated parking lot, so you'll need to use a nearby paid lot — just so you know, the cheapest one is the Gukchaebosang Park Public Parking Lot.

Is there a wait at Cafe Dongi on a weekend afternoon?

We showed up at Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch on a weekend, relatively early in the afternoon, but honestly a little later and we'd have been waiting too. We snagged the very last open table — right behind us, people were signing the waiting list in the waiting area.

Cafe Dongi menu and prices

Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch has a wide range on the menu — signature dishes, new items, seasonal specials, and solo hanjeongsik (set course) options along with the basic Dongi rice table for one.

Side dishes included nuruk-aged tangsuyuk, fried mandu (dumplings), kimchi jeon (kimchi pancake), meatballs, and king prawn tempura.

Since yeolmu bibimbap was on the seasonal summer specials, I debated a bit and ended up ordering the bulgogi yeolmu bibimbap. When it's this hot out, cold noodles or yeolmu bibimbap are exactly what you crave.

Besides the signature dishes, there were plenty of set courses and rice table options too. I loved that despite the clean, tidy interior and varied menu, the prices weren't intimidating at all.

Just so you know, Cafe Dongi also has a kids' set meal on the menu.

Frying your own eggs at the Cafe Dongi self-serve bar

Right after ordering, we headed over to the self-serve bar set up in a corner of the restaurant. At Cafe Dongi, not only can you get a hearty meal at a reasonable price, but you can also fry your own eggs while you wait for your food to arrive!

There were fried eggs, five-grain rice, barley gangjeong, and seaweed — take as much as you like. On top of that, regulars can look forward to a 15% discount event on select menu items every month.

Honestly, seaweed, seaweed sauce, and a fried egg alone are enough to finish a whole bowl of rice.

Bulgogi yeolmu bibimbap and the stir-fried baby octopus set

Our bulgogi yeolmu bibimbap and stir-fried octopus set arrived at Cafe Dongi.

The tangsuyuk, Cafe Dongi's signature dish, also came out. Aged with traditional rice nuruk (fermentation starter), it had a crispy texture and a delicious sauce.

The yeolmu bibimbap, on a new-menu special price at the time, combined the fresh crunch of yeolmu with sweet-salty bulgogi — an impossible-to-mess-up pairing.

Alongside the tangsuyuk and bulgogi yeolmu bibimbap, I went back and forth between the jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) rice table and stir-fried octopus, and ended up going with the octopus. It came with doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) too, and the spice level worked even for someone with a low spice tolerance like me.

Wrapping the octopus in seaweed from the self-serve bar was delicious too. If you're looking for a good-value spot on Dongseong-ro, how about the set menus at Cafe Dongi?
