Gwangju Korean restaurant for old-style jokbal: Kkankkan Jjokbal

In short

Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch is a Korean restaurant in Suwan District, Gwangsan, Gwangju. I ordered the medium old-style king jokbal with the complimentary sides and spicy bossam from the review event; the jokbal was tender, while the spicy bossam cut through the richness. Verdict: A solid choice for a family or group dinner if you avoid peak hours.

I think I've been here so many times that I've lost count. I also noticed that they have a new menu item called Sammi Bossam this time.

Is there a wait for weekend dinner?

When you visit on the weekend, there seem to be especially many families coming in for group meals. I've visited on both weekdays and weekends, and there are definitely far more people on weekends—if you arrive even a little late, the wait starts right away. If you want to sit down and eat without waiting, I recommend avoiding the busiest meal times.

Choosing an old-style king jokbal size

Whenever I visit, I always find myself wondering whether to have jokbal (braised pig's trotters) or bossam (boiled pork wraps). There are so many menu options, so after thinking about what to eat today, I decided on jokbal.

The menu I ordered was old-style king jokbal. When you tap it, you can choose the size yourself. The standard offering is a medium, and for an additional charge, you can switch to a large or extra-large. It would be good to adjust the size according to your party.

Complimentary sides and warm soup before the jokbal

They first set out the complimentary side dishes: salad with a nutty dressing, fresh ssam vegetables (wrap greens), and pickled radish slices for wraps. The salad dressing had a rich, nutty flavor that I love, so I finished it and asked for a refill.

A refreshing broth also comes as a complimentary service. There were so many guests enjoying their meals with drinks, and with this pleasantly spicy broth, I don't think you'd need a separate soup while drinking. It comes with a burner, so you can keep it simmering and enjoy it warm. After ordering the main dish, these items kept me from getting bored while I waited for it to arrive.

A glossy medium-size jokbal

The glossy jokbal arrived.

Not long after ordering, my main dish arrived. I ordered the medium size. The meat was truly tender, and once you try it, I think you'll keep coming back to Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch. Eating the jokbal with pickled radish or wrap greens means you can just keep going without getting tired of it, haha. The side dishes are refillable too, so you can ask for more once you've finished them.

Review-event spicy bossam and dessert

Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch is a place I would recommend for dinner in Suwan District.

They were running a review event, so I joined in and got to try the spicy bossam too. It has an added kick unlike regular bossam, so I think anyone who likes spicy food would really enjoy it. The seasoning completely cut through the richness and left a refreshing finish.

For dessert, there was ice cream and coffee. After a filling meal, ending with a tasty dessert made for a happy finish. There was a wide variety of menu items, and the complimentary sides included soft tofu stew, steamed egg, and salad. The restaurant is spacious with plenty of seats, so it seems suitable for family gatherings or group meals.
