Hello~ it's Kkingkkang here🍊 There's nothing quite as small and yet as sure a joy as ending the day after work with really good food!
Not long ago I went to a well-known meat restaurant in Hyangnam to have dinner with a friend. I hurried over right after work, but even on a weekday evening there was already a wait. That's how popular it is.

Weekday evening wait: 30 minutes with Catchtable
Luckily I joined the queue online in the Catchtable app as I set out, so I got in after about 30 minutes. This is one of the few hot spots in Hyangnam with a waiting machine, known by word of mouth for its generous sets and good value. Here's my honest review of Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi (거창숯불쪽갈비), where I left satisfied~
How does parking work at Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi?
Here's the most important info if you're driving! The restaurant offers 2 hours of free parking, both in its own building's lot and in the lot of the No Brand building right next door, which was very convenient. Even if there are no spaces, there's a public parking lot nearby, so you can visit without worrying about parking.

Side dishes and 3 sauces, including cumin
Once we were seated, a solid lineup of side dishes was set out quickly: crunchy salad, salty pickled radish, refreshing water kimchi (mul-kimchi) and nutty white kimchi, all neatly arranged. Best of all, three dipping sauces are served, and one of them was the cumin (jjuran) sauce you dip lamb skewers in. I found that so surprising and happy to see!

Ordering the 2-person set: half salt, half sauce
Here's the menu. We ordered the 2-person set, which has a generous mix of flavors and side dishes. My friend can't handle spicy food and was worried, so we chose half salt-grilled and half seasoned ribs.

Pre-grilled ribs need just 2–3 minutes on the grill
The meat comes pre-grilled by a pro, so you only need to warm it on the grill for 2–3 minutes, which is really convenient! The moment it hit the grill, the glossy shine looked so appetizing.

I first bit into the plain salt ribs: no gamey smell at all, crispy outside and juicy inside, with a really nice chew. Dipping them alternately in the soy, spicy and cumin sauces gave each bite a different charm, so there was no time to get tired of them.
The soy-based seasoned ribs weren't overly strong, just sweet, so my friend enjoyed them too. Personally, my favorite combo was wrapping a bit of rib meat in crunchy, clean white kimchi. Generous portions and quality meat at this price? No wonder it's a famous good-value spot in Hyangnam.

How is the nurungji cream sujebi that comes with the set?
While I was happily gnawing on ribs, the nurungji cream sujebi (scorched-rice and hand-pulled dough flake soup in cream sauce) that comes with the set arrived. The name alone made me curious what it would taste like! One spoonful: not a super thick cream sauce, but not too light either, a subtle taste that really clings. It was a fresh combination I'd never tried, and it totally hit my taste!
My friend liked it too, saying it wasn't heavy like pasta cream but nutty, so it was easy to scrape the bowl clean. The chewy sujebi and toasty nurungji blended smoothly with the nutty cream sauce and put the finishing touch on the 2-person rib set.

Who should visit Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi in Hyangnam
Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi was a top good-value spot in Hyangnam, with tender pre-grilled ribs without any gamey smell and a unique nurungji cream sujebi I couldn't find anywhere else. You can join the queue ahead of time with Catchtable to cut the wait, and the parking support is reassuring, so it's a great place to drop by with friends or a partner.
If you want to raise a glass after work with good meat and a special side dish, or you like a generous set menu, I strongly recommend visiting Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi in Hyangnam without hesitation!
