Daegu ssambap restaurant, crispy mackerel for a fish-shy mom: Imga-ne

Imga-ne Ureong Ssambap (임가네우렁쌈밥) is a Korean set-meal restaurant specialising in snail ssambap (leaf-wrap rice), on Seochon-ro in Dong-gu, Daegu, at the foot of Palgongsan. On a weekday lunch outing with Mom, the writer shared the Dangsindo set for two (boiled pork, snail ssamjang, mackerel and stone pot rice, 34,000 won); even Mom, who doesn't like fish, enjoyed the crispy grilled mackerel, and the wrap greens were refilled several times at the self-serve bar. For a generous, fairly priced spread, the Dangsindo set at Imga-ne Ureong Ssambap is a satisfying choice.

Daegu Western restaurant with baby and mom: flap steak lunch at Dana

Dana Dongseong-ro Main Branch (다나 동성로본점) is a two-floor casual Western restaurant in the Tongsin and Yasi alleys of Dongseong-ro, Jung-gu, Daegu. On a weekday lunch with her baby and her mom, the writer had beef flap steak, Cheongyang chili (a spicy Korean green chili) bacon cream pasta, a cream cheese green salad and one drink for ₩50,500, and both she and her mom were happy with the tender steak and the thick, spicy cream pasta. Dana Dongseong-ro Main Branch is a good Dongseong-ro pick for a family meal or a date that pairs steak with pasta.

Daegu Korean restaurant: kids' set with seaweed soup, Cafe Dongyi

Cafe Dongyi Chimsan Branch (카페동이 침산점) is a Korean set-meal restaurant on the first floor of dormitory Building E at Samseong Creative Campus in Chimsan-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu. After a weekend outing at Samseong Creative Campus with her child and husband, the writer's family of three ordered a charcoal-grilled spicy pork set, a bulgogi set, a small tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) and a kids' Little Explorer tangsuyuk set, paying ₩40,600 for lunch. Cafe Dongyi Chimsan Branch is a good spot for a filling meal with kids during a campus outing, with no parking worries.

Gyeongju walnut pastry shop after a Cheomseongdae trip: Buja Hodu

Buja Hodu (부자호두) is a walnut pastry shop on Poseok-ro near Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. After a weekend at Cheomseongdae and Hwangnidan-gil with her husband and child, the writer took home a 24-piece mix box from Buja Hodu for a snack at home and saved the rest for breakfast and her child's snacks. With a whole walnut in every piece, a generous filling and color-coded wrappers for each flavor, Buja Hodu worked well as both a family snack and a Gyeongju souvenir.

Post-lunch café in Chilgok 3-jigu, Daegu: yogurt granita at Pascucci

Pascucci Daegu Chilgok3jigu-jeom is a large 65-pyeong café in the Chilgok 3-jigu shopping district of Buk-gu, Daegu, near Palgeo Station. After lunch with her mom, the writer ordered an iced Americano, a berry yogurt granita and a slice of the new cassata black sesame cake for 20,000 won in total, and was happy with both the gelato-topped granita and the nutty black sesame cake. Pascucci Chilgok 3-jigu is a relaxed spot in Chilgok for coffee and dessert in one place after a meal.

Gyeongju pie shop's no-reheat 6 apple pie box: Gyeongju Tokyo Pie

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie (경주도쿄파이) is a takeout-only handmade pie bakery about a 3-minute walk from the main street of Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju. On a weekend outing with her husband and child, the writer bought the 6-piece gift set of original Gyeongju Tokyo Pies for 26,500 won and ate them at home without reheating in an air fryer. The pastry stayed crisp and the whole aged apple inside gave a great texture. Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is a dessert worth recommending as a snack gift from a Gyeongju trip.

Gyeongju mochi shop restock wait: 3 flavors for 20,000 won, Tareudang

Tareudang is a fruit mochi and egg tart dessert shop on Sajeong-ro in Hwangnidang-gil, Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. After exploring Cheomseongdae, the writer found Tareudang sold out, came back at restock time and took home peach yogurt, mango yogurt and gold kiwi mochi for 20,000 won. The mochi were chewy outside and packed with bean paste and fruit flavor, a hit with the writer's child too. Stop by Tareudang early, before it sells out.

Shabu-shabu buffet near Iasiapolis, Daegu: bunmoja finish at Shabu20

Shabu20 Daegu Bokhyeon branch is an all-you-can-eat shabu-shabu and Vietnamese rice roll buffet near Gonghang Bridge on Gonghang-ro in Buk-gu, Daegu, close to Iasiapolis and Daegu Airport. Craving shabu-shabu on a cool autumn day, the writer came with her mother, and because neither eats spicy food they chose only the basic original broths for beef sirloin and vegetables, finishing with bunmoja (sweet potato starch noodles) and noodles before an affogato and an Americano. The weekday 80-minute lunch course came to 45,800 won for two, covering everything from meat to dessert.

Beef grill with a kids' playroom in Chimsan-dong, Daegu: Gogi 9dan

Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch is a beef barbecue restaurant in Buk, Daegu, with high chairs, a playroom, and group seating. I shared half portions of outside skirt and boneless short rib with my husband and child, then had the set dishes, coffee, and patbingsu; the beef was tender and the family-friendly setup was convenient.
