Caffeine Focus is a bakery café in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, occupying all three floors of a building beside the Hwaseong Fortress wall path. Arriving around 6:50pm after dinner with a middle-school-age child, we took a 3rd-floor window seat and ordered an iced americano (5,500 won), a matcha latte (6,300 won) and a choco fig ciabatta (6,800 won), all in generous portions. Even in the evening, Caffeine Focus is an easy place to sit a while with a fortress-wall view.

Suwon pizza restaurant with a teen, 5pm corn pizza: Low Five Sinpung

Low Five Sinpung is a pizza and pasta restaurant in an alley behind the Suwon Ipark Museum of Art in Haenggung-dong, Suwon. A visit with a middle-school kid at 5pm, right after the 15:00–16:50 break time ends, meant no wait for corn pizza (₩25,000), avocado kimchi fried rice (₩14,000), and Caesar salad (₩12,000). The corn pizza at Low Five Sinpung was good enough to order whole rather than half-and-half, and the three leftover slices went home in a box.

Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil converted-house restaurant for two: Dongyang

Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch is a Korean restaurant set in a converted house on Poseok-ro in Hwangridan-gil, Gyeongju. Arriving at the 11:00 opening rush, the writer ordered a medium sumi dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken) for 28,000 won with a beef tartare rice bowl at 6,000 won and a pollack roe rice bowl at 5,500 won, splitting each in half with a friend; the boneless chicken in tomato-based sauce was mild enough for spice-sensitive eaters. Dongyang Baekban is a good Hwangridan-gil choice when two people want dakbokkeumtang without overordering.
