I got a layered cut and wave perm at Naple Hair Oryu-dong Station, right in front of Oryu-dong Station. It's known as one of the go-to spots in Oryu-dong for layered perms.

I never used to care much about styling my hair. In my 20s I could get away with just youthful energy and call it "pure and simple," wearing it straight all the time.

Now heading into my 30s, straight hair just isn't cutting it anymore — the volume has dropped, and hair down past my waist is just plain heavy. You get to the salon by taking the stairs on the right side of the building where the Baskin Robbins is, up to the second floor.

On the way up the stairs, you can quickly check prices for basic treatments on the price board posted there.

Being a go-to salon for layered perms, there were plenty of gorgeously styled cuts on display. Could I really end up with hair this stylish too?

Naple Hair Oryu-dong Station is an eco-friendly salon, with green accents in the interior and eco-friendly products throughout.

You can check out natural herbal formulas and vegan/low-irritant products, and the waiting area inside felt like a café — really nice atmosphere.

The styling chairs and shampoo chairs were both in a genuinely pleasant, clean environment. They've apparently been running this salon in Oryu-dong for 18 years — must have remodeled, because it's spotless.

I called ahead to ask about a general style and made a reservation, then showed up at the appointed date and time.

While going over the price list and getting a detailed rundown of the treatment options, I got to enjoy a welcome drink with a snack. Flip the menu over and there's a whole range of drinks, so you can ask for whatever suits your taste.

The consultation and the 3-hour perm process

The designer who handled my consultation and treatment today was Manager Huiseo (희서)!

With 12 years of veteran experience, and a portfolio full of women's layered cuts and hush cuts done beautifully, I got even more excited before we started. You can find her info through Naver Reservations.

After about 15 minutes of a detailed style consultation with the manager, she started with a shampoo to check my hair condition. My hair is thick with a bit of natural straight-wavy texture — after examining it a couple times, she quickly figured out an approach and started with the layered cut.

On top of the layered cut, I wanted a natural wave without having to use a flat iron every day. She picked up on that need and went with a design perm, putting waves into the ends so that just blow-drying would produce a natural curl.

Starting with the design cut, then the wave perm process, then neutralizing the heat-treated hair — about 3 hours total, including the final blow-dry, and the style I wanted was complete. The naturally curling result was exactly what I'd been hoping for.

Right up until the shampoo after the neutralizing step, it was still an unknown whether I'd get the look I wanted, so I was half excited and half nervous. But seeing the before and after, she'd captured exactly the natural vibe I was going for.

For an accurate comparison, I took photos in the same pose before the treatment with straight hair. The straight look was pretty ordinary, but with the layered cut and waves added, it feels more like a chic city-girl style — my confidence is fully recharged.
