Gwanghwamun bakery café for fall blend coffee, financier: Lemangdoré

In short

Lemangdoré Gwanghwamun is a three-floor bakery café at 17 Mugyo-ro in Jung-gu, Seoul, between Seoul City Hall and Cheonggyecheon. After seeing lines there even at weekday lunchtime, the writer visited one afternoon and tried the fall blend coffee and Lemangdoré's signature financier. The cozy wood-toned space and the depth of the coffee and dessert made it clear why people queue at this Gwanghwamun café.

Lemangdoré Gwanghwamun is a café I keep hearing about lately, whether I'm scrolling social media or meeting friends. I saw people lining up outside even at weekday lunchtime and really wanted to know what the appeal was. On a nice afternoon when I was craving something sweet, I decided to join the line myself. Long story short, one taste and I understood why it's popular. It's not just a trend: the comfort of the space and the depth of flavor are the real deal, and the atmosphere stands out even among Gwanghwamun cafés.

What is the atmosphere at Lemangdoré Gwanghwamun like?

Lemangdoré Gwanghwamun is a warm, cozy café with dark wood-toned interiors and soft lighting. It's near Seoul City Hall and Cheonggyecheon, so it works well for a stop on the way home from work or a weekend date. The warm, snug air the moment I opened the door was so nice. It felt like a little shelter in the middle of the busy city. The smell of baking bread and coffee right at the entrance instantly put me in a good mood. I also noticed that everyone pulled out their cameras as soon as they walked in.

How do you order at Lemangdoré Gwanghwamun?

There's a kiosk at the entrance, which makes ordering very easy. My picks that day were the fall blend coffee and the financier (a small buttery almond cake), Lemangdoré's signature item. The dessert lineup is so showy that I spent ages deciding, though it was a happy kind of dilemma. I tried a sip of the sample coffee set out next to the counter, and I could feel the care in it, which raised my expectations for the drinks even more. The staff were also very kind, so even first-timers can relax here.

How does the fall blend coffee taste?

The fall blend coffee stood out for its nutty richness and clean finish. Even the strong aroma when the cup arrived was something special. One sip and I knew why this place is known as a great Gwanghwamun café. The nuttiness spreading through my mouth and the clean aftertaste were excellent. I could forget the noise of the city and focus entirely on one cup of coffee. Maybe because the beans are fresh, there was no off-taste at all and the true flavor of the coffee came through deeply, so I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who usually enjoys coffee.

What does Lemangdoré's signature financier taste like?

The financier was crisp outside and surprisingly moist and soft inside. It isn't too sweet, so it's a perfect match with an americano or hand-drip coffee. The dessert was honestly better than I expected. With the first bite, a rich buttery aroma and a refined flavor filled my mouth. I understood right away why people think of this place first for Gwanghwamun desserts. It was so appealing that even when I was full, I wanted another one.

Seating and mood on each floor

Lemangdoré Gwanghwamun runs across floors 1 to 3 and is quite spacious, so you don't need to worry much about finding a seat. The 2nd floor has floor-to-ceiling windows that let in warm sunlight, which is good for working, while the 3rd floor feels calmer and cozier, perfect for conversation. Each floor has a slightly different mood, so you can choose a spot to suit your taste, which is a big plus. With such comfortable facilities, it's a fine place to come with friends or to spend quiet time alone.

A Gwanghwamun café I'd go back to

Both the atmosphere and the taste satisfied me, so Lemangdoré Gwanghwamun is a Gwanghwamun café I'd like to visit again. It's been a while since I found a place like this, and I had a really happy time. If I'm nearby, I'd come back without hesitation and try the other desserts I missed this time. In the end, good food matters, but I think we return to a place for the warm memories we made there. Do you usually jump right in when you find a popular spot with a wait?
