Unjeong Chinese restaurant: kid's pick jjamjjamman set at Mimi China

Mimi China (미미차이나) is a Chinese restaurant on Cheonjeonggu-ro in Paju, Gyeonggi, near E-mart Paju and close to Unjeong New Town. The writer's child wanted jajangmyeon (black bean noodles), so the family ordered the Mimi 2-person Jjamjjamman Set (jjamppong + jajangmyeon + 4 dumplings) and tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork). The rich sinmi jjamppong broth, handmade fried dumplings and big pieces of tangsuyuk stood out. Mimi China is a good family pick for trying jajangmyeon, jjamppong, dumplings and tangsuyuk in one meal.

Iron-plate dakgalbi over army stew near Heyri, Paju: Mom's Uijeongbu

Mom's Uijeongbu Budaejjigae (맘스의정부부대찌개) is a Korean restaurant specializing in budae jjigae (army stew) near Heyri Village and the Shinsegae Premium Outlet in Paju, Gyeonggi, and its iron-plate dakgalbi (stir-fried chicken on a hot plate) is also a popular order. The writer came for army stew but switched after seeing the next table's dakgalbi, ordering 2 servings at 14,000 won each plus 1 serving of fried rice for 3,000 won. Tender chicken, a sweet-and-savory sauce that isn't spicy and the fried rice to finish made the iron-plate dakgalbi at Mom's Uijeongbu Budaejjigae a satisfying meal.

Family Korean BBQ in Paju Garam-maeul: pre-grilled pork neck, Tannae

Tannae Paju Main Branch (탄내 파주본점) is a Korean BBQ restaurant near Garam-maeul in Paju, Gyeonggi, that pre-grills pork over coal briquettes. On a weekend evening with the kids, we ordered 4 servings of pork neck (180g for 16,000 won each) and seasoned pork skin, plus a crab doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) chosen for free. Because the meat arrives pre-grilled, adults can eat right away while the kids' portions cook a little longer, which makes Tannae an easy family dinner spot.

Paju Unjeong dumpling spot: mandu soup, new makguksu – Bubyeokjeong

Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu (부벽정평양만두) is a Korean restaurant specializing in Pyeongyang-style dumplings (mandu) and buckwheat noodles (makguksu) at 129 Jimok-ro in Unjeong, Paju. On a second visit the writer ordered mandu soup and the new Pyeongyang mul makguksu (cold noodles in broth) and Pyeongyang bibim makguksu (spicy mixed noodles). The mung bean pancake was sold out, but the mild mandu soup with a small 500-won bowl of rice stirred in was satisfying. Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu is worth a return trip when you want mandu soup and Pyeongyang makguksu together in Unjeong.

The crisp-outside, soft-inside gourmet butter salt bread and the generously filled roe potato salt bread show why Boulangerie Tan is known as Unjeong's go-to salt bread spot.

Long Time No See Yadang Branch is a pizza pub on the 2nd floor of the Samyung Cinema building near Yadang Station in Paju, Gyeonggi. On a family dinner with kids, the order was pepperoni pizza, Hawaiian pizza and rabokki (tteokbokki rice cakes with ramen noodles), and the spicy rabokki cut through the richness of the pizza nicely. Long Time No See Yadang Branch is a pub, but with kids' drinks and plenty of events, it works well as a family dinner spot.
