Cheese fried rice fire show at Gongjung Dodeok, a Mapo duck restaurant

In short

Gongjung Dodeok is a duck roast and bulgogi restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Daeheung Station Exit 3, with outdoor bench seating beside the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail. On a Thursday evening, four diners shared the large Gongjung half-and-half set (99,000 won) plus kimchi pancake, self-fried rice for two and a mozzarella cheese add-on, and the cheese is the best tip here because staff fry the rice at your table with a fire show. Outdoor bench seats at Gongjung Dodeok book out fast, so reserve ahead.

Signature spread of Gongjung Dodeok duck roast on the grill

Drop the idea that only old-timers eat duck roast. (Okay, we're technically old-timers too, haha.) I went to a duck bulgogi and duck roast place and thought — can a duck restaurant really be this hot right now?

Everyone loses it over this outdoor bench dining vibe, young or old. This is Gongjung Dodeok, tucked inside the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail near Daeheung Station. Between modern buildings, an old-school tavern scene suddenly opens up out of nowhere. People sitting around wooden benches eating duck — you catch it at a glance while walking the trail, and it stops you in your tracks.

When you think of duck, you probably picture a health-food place you'd go with your parents. Not here. With this cool autumn evening breeze perfect for sitting outside, let me introduce Gongjung Dodeok, the increasingly hot outdoor dining spot near Daeheung Station's Gyeongui Line Forest Trail.

Where Gongjung Dodeok is, and how to book an outdoor bench seat

Gongjung Dodeok is on the 1st floor of 28 Baekbeom-ro 20-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul (Daeheung-dong 441-1), a 5-minute walk from Daeheung Station Exit 3. Open daily 11:00–22:00 with last order at 21:00. No parking on site, so paid parking is only available at the nearby Hyundai private lot.

  • 📍 Location: 28 Baekbeom-ro 20-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul (Daeheung-dong 441-1)
  • 🕓 Hours: Daily 11:00–22:00 (last order 21:00)
  • 🅿️ Parking: Not available
  • ⭕ Other: Reservations available, separate men's/women's restrooms, group-friendly, waiting area, high chairs, corkage-free

A hanok-style building suddenly pops up between modern buildings! Outdoor benches everywhere! Genuinely a hotspot for outdoor dining in this weather right now — it's the kind of modern tavern scene that makes you want to shout 'come on in.' The location is already unbeatable since it sits right by the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail, so the view is incredible too.

There were empty seats, but they were already booked. Outdoor bench seats fill up on reservations really fast, so I highly, highly recommend booking ahead. The benches come in different sizes too, from small two-tops to large ones that fit a group.

A place this hot is obviously going to have a wait. We came on a Thursday around 6:30pm with four people — the outdoor benches were fully booked, but there were a few indoor seats left! The waiting area is smartly tucked inside the restaurant too.

I couldn't take many indoor photos since people were seated so close together. So I took shots of the emptier spots on our way out. There are room-style seating areas too, and indoor tables range from 2-tops to 4-tops — plenty of variety.

Gongjung Dodeok menu, prices and the corkage-free rule

Gongjung Dodeok menu board with weekday lunch hot pot rice options

The weekday lunch hot pot rice menu looks amazing... but we came on a weekday evening, right?

Gongjung Dodeok duck set menu composition chart

Time to order the tasty-looking SET.

  • Gongjung half-and-half set, large (3–4 people): ₩99,000
  • Kimchi pancake: ₩19,000
  • Self-fried rice: ₩3,000 × 2
  • Mozzarella cheese add-on: ₩3,000
  • Sapporo draft beer: ₩11,000

The duck set menu is really well put together. The kimchi pancake batter is mixed fresh the moment you order, so it takes 10 minutes. (Whoever runs this place knows what they're doing.)

And here's the best tip I can give you. THE tip. If you add mozzarella cheese to the self-fried rice, it's not self-serve anymore — a staff member comes and fries it for you ^^ This isn't written anywhere, so now that you've read this post... definitely add cheese to the fried rice ^^

And on top of that — it's corkage-free!!!!! (except for drinks sold in the restaurant). Good drinks to pair with duck are precious, ugh. Only one friend ordered a Sapporo draft, and the rest of us stuck with water ^^ but they do have plenty of options — draft beer, highballs, yantai gaoliang, traditional liquor, soju, bottled beer, makgeolli, and more!!

Gongjung Dodeok's duck etiquette sign

Go ahead and read Gongjung Dodeok's duck rules while you're at it... those in a hurry never taste the true flavor... keep the warmth but never let it burn... fried rice is a procedure to be followed as fate demands... leaving food behind is not a virtue... haha, noted.

What the 99,000 won half-and-half set brings to a table of four

The side dishes arrived and they're delicious. Pickled vegetables and green onion kimchi — both bold in flavor and color, so they really stand out. Great eaten together with the leafy wraps.

Two dipping sauces: ssamjang and mayo

And this ssamjang sauce? And mayo sauce? Two kinds of sauce come out, and dipping the duck in the mayo sauce? was surprisingly different and tasty.

And a sip of the Sapporo draft my friend was drinking... I stole a taste — smooth and so good.

Duck gamjatang (potato stew): a light, restorative soup

Oricongam-tang (duck bone broth stew) and the roast/bulgogi arrived almost at the same time. Oricongam-tang is made by deeply simmering pork neck bones, then adding dried radish greens, boneless duck, perilla leaves, and ground perilla seeds — a perfect nourishing potato stew. Just let it boil, and the longer it boils, the richer it gets.

It's not a heavy, punchy broth. It's actually lighter and less seasoned than expected. Eating the strongly seasoned bulgogi and then taking a spoonful of this warm broth in between felt somehow even more nourishing... If you prefer a healthy broth that highlights the ingredients' natural flavor over an intense one, this will suit you well, hehe.

Duck roast or duck bulgogi? Why half-and-half wins

An insane-looking spread: duck roast + minari (water dropwort) + bulgogi.. plus potatoes and rice cakes too. Don't overthink duck roast vs. bulgogi — just order the half-and-half. This is a flavor you need to try both of. Especially if it's your first visit, definitely order the half-and-half set, ugh.

Anyway, the duck is so tender. A lot of duck roast places serve dry, tough meat, right? This one is genuinely moist and tender.

Tender, well-grilled duck roast meat

Everyone says the spicy bulgogi was the tastiest, but surprisingly, I liked the duck roast better. Plain-grilled without seasoning, topped with minari and dipped in sauce — the duck flavor felt even more pronounced and delicious ❤️

Ugh... I should have eaten this outside on the benches. My fault for not booking ahead. It's the kind of gorgeous, vibe-filled outdoor dining spot you'll want to come back to — you all should definitely go, ugh.

Kimchi pancake, 19,000 won: worth adding for four people

Large, crispy-grilled kimchi pancake

A truly gorgeous kimchi pancake makes its entrance.. look at that huge size. Look at that vivid color. Not too thin, not too thick — crispy and perfectly grilled.

Cross-section of a torn-off piece of kimchi pancake

The tangy flavor of the kimchi really comes through, with both crunch and crispiness intact — so, so good, ugh. You know that instead of just eating duck the whole time on the bench, adding a pancake like this makes the drinking table so much richer, right..? Not ordering a pancake for that outdoor dining vibe is basically cheating. If there are 4 or more of you, definitely add a pancake.

Always add mozzarella cheese to the self-fried rice

Gongjung Dodeok's self-fried rice is ₩3,000, and the mozzarella cheese add-on is ₩3,000. Isn't it supposed to be self-serve, though? I ordered the fried rice and the staff member was about to fry it for me, so I said, huh, isn't this self-serve? They said if you order mozzarella cheese, they'll fry it for you, haha.

Isn't this the best tip ever haha. Honestly, having someone else fry it for you tastes better than doing it yourself, right, ugh.

Fire show moment while cooking the fried rice

On top of that, they do a fire show while making it — you'd be a fool not to order the mozzarella cheese at this point...

I was genuinely stuffed from all the meat and the pancake, feeling like I'd burst, but skipping this gorgeous fried rice is cheating. Even when you're full, you make room. That's K-dessert for you. The savory duck fat flavor really comes through, spicy and salty with a nutty cheese finish — nothing missing from this incredibly good fried rice.

Why this Mapo duck restaurant stays packed

Here's Gongjung Dodeok as seen from the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail. Drop the idea that duck restaurants are only for taking your parents. While you're out on a walk, a tavern-like outdoor dining scene suddenly opens up in front of you, and it's not easy to just walk past.

On top of that, in this cool weather right now, the outdoor dining atmosphere is incredible, and the duck you eat there tastes amazing too — this would be perfect for a group gathering as well, ugh. You'll understand right away why this is the outdoor dining hotspot near Daeheung Station, so give it a visit!
