I visited Sutbul Seonghwa (숯불성화) in Songnidan-gil, Songpa, Seoul! I was looking for a place with a nice atmosphere near Seokchon Lake, and this is where I ended up. It has a more upscale feel than your usual BBQ joint, and you grill aged beef over charcoal.
Good beef, charcoal and a wide choice of drinks all in one place, so I'd love to recommend it to anyone looking for a special meal~ My pick for a Songnidan-gil blind date restaurant! Parking info is at the bottom of the post~~
What is Sutbul Seonghwa? Aged beef charcoal BBQ next to Seokchon Lake

Sutbul Seonghwa is an aged beef charcoal BBQ restaurant in Songnidan-gil, Songpa, Seoul, close to Seokchon Lake. The location is great for a meal after a walk around the lake or a day at Lotte World, so it works well as part of a date course too.
They grill nicely marbled beef over real charcoal to bring out its flavor. They also have whisky, wine, champagne and other drinks, so it feels a bit more special than just eating meat. If you've been looking for a good beef place with atmosphere in Songnidan-gil, keep this one on your radar.

Inside Sutbul Seonghwa: good for a blind date or a romantic dinner?
The restaurant is decorated mainly in black tones, calm and classy. It felt more relaxed than a loud, bustling BBQ place.
You can even see the meat displayed in the aging cabinet, which builds anticipation for what you're about to eat. The vibe is polished enough for dates and anniversaries. It also seemed good for catching up with friends, and I thought it would work for a meal or gathering with your parents too.

Best of all, the charm of grilling meat over charcoal combined with the upscale setting put me in a good mood before we even ate~!

What side dishes come with the beef?
Sutbul Seonghwa had salt, wasabi, tangy pickles and other things that go well with beef. The meat itself matters, of course, but you can't skip what you eat with it!
From salt and wasabi that bring out the natural flavor of the meat to pickles that refresh your palate, there was plenty to mix and match by taste. With beef, I like to dip it lightly in salt or add a little wasabi rather than pile on seasoning from the start, since you taste the meat more. Eating the sides in between kept it from getting monotonous, and I liked being able to try lots of combinations~~
Signature Seonghwa Assortment 400g: which cuts come out?

This time I ordered the restaurant's signature Seonghwa Assortment (성화모둠) 400g. It lets you taste both the rich, savory sirloin and rib fingers in one go~~

Beef changes in texture and flavor depending on how long you grill it, so watching it cook over the coals made me want to dig in right away. With that charcoal aroma added, my expectations for the flavor went through the roof!!! If you want to sample several cuts a little at a time, the Seonghwa Assortment is a good place to start.

Salt first, then wasabi
For the first bite I dipped the beef lightly in salt to taste the meat on its own, then tried the next with wasabi. I like to keep the first bite as simple as possible when eating beef.
The sharp wasabi on the rich beef cut the greasiness while keeping the flavor alive. Being able to try different combinations instead of eating one cut the same way is the charm of the Seonghwa Assortment!!

My personal favorite: charcoal-grilled mushrooms with beef
My personal favorite combo at Sutbul Seonghwa was mushrooms with the meat! The charcoal-grilled mushrooms had a subtle aroma and a great texture.
After eating only meat, the mushrooms felt like a palate refresher, and their flavor went really well with the beef! If you like having mushrooms with your meat, definitely order them. With salt, wasabi, side dishes and mushrooms, I could mix things up to my taste right to the end~~

Beef this good and no rice? Can't resist~~ So I ordered a bowl of steamed rice right away!

What stood out at Sutbul Seonghwa was grilling aged beef over real charcoal and the classy atmosphere of the restaurant.
Is parking easy at Sutbul Seonghwa? Free lot behind the restaurant and evening valet

Sutbul Seonghwa (Seokchon Station, Songnidan-gil) has a free parking lot behind the restaurant, and valet service in the evening! So the meal was really stress-free~~ The lot is small, though, so it could be full.

A sunset walk around Seokchon Lake on the owner's tip
When we came out after eating, the owner said there was plenty of parking time, so we should go around Seokchon Lake before leaving, haha. Thanks to that, we took a light stroll to the lake!

The Seokchon Lake sunset we got to see thanks to the kind owner~
If you're looking for a Songnidan-gil blind date restaurant near Seokchon Lake, or planning a special beef dinner as a Songnidan-gil date course, I highly recommend Sutbul Seonghwa!!
