Mangwon Station bar, early-evening window-seat bossam: Jeongju Ilga
In short
Jeongju Ilga is a Korean cooking bar at the entrance of Mangridan-gil in Mapo, Seoul, a 5-10 minute walk (about 550m) from Mangwon Station Exit 2. A couple who had been turned away for lack of seats on every earlier try came in the early evening, took a window table and ordered jeongju bossam (medium, boiled pork with wraps) for 27,000 won, pepperoni potato pancake for 18,000 won and janchi guksu (banquet noodles) for 8,000 won. Jeongju Ilga suits a full dinner with drinks better than a quick second-round stop.

Jeongju Ilga, a Mangwon-dong restaurant worth trying

Mangwon-dong is a neighborhood my husband and I used to hang out in a lot back when we were dating. One place we'd always had our eye on was the cooking-bar Jeongju Ilga (정주일가). Every single time we went, there were no seats, and we'd have to turn back. 😂 This time we made a plan and went early in the evening, and we finally got to eat there! And once we did, I totally got why it's so popular!! The food's great, but the staff are also super friendly. Let's get into the review!😊
Where Jeongju Ilga is and when it opens
Jeongju Ilga is at 66 Poeun-ro, 1st floor, Mapo-gu, Seoul, about 550 meters (5-10 minutes on foot) from Mangwon Station Exit 2. Hours are Mon-Fri 18:00-02:00 and Sat-Sun 17:00-02:00, with last order at 01:00. Pets are welcome too.
Just walk from Mangwon Station Exit 2 toward Mangridan-gil. If you're a slow walker who likes to look around the neighborhood like me, it'll take about 10 minutes — otherwise, more like 5.

It's right near a Mega Coffee at the entrance to Mangridan-gil, so it's not hard to find.
Window seats, inside tables and the mood at Jeongju Ilga
Once you step inside Jeongju Ilga, there are window seats looking out onto the street and separate table seating further in.

Sitting by the window watching people pass by while eating — that felt like the ultimate Mangwon-dong mood.

There were paintings and objects all over that gave it a proper traditional-tavern feel, so it was fun to look around while waiting for the food.

According to their listing, these three are the signature menu items. We ordered bossam, pepperoni potato pancake, and noodles.
Jeongju bossam (medium), 27,000 won
Jeongju Ilga's jeongju bossam (boiled pork wrap) comes in two sizes — medium ₩27,000 and large ₩35,000. As soon as it was served, this savory aroma hit us.

- ✔️ The meat is soft with no gamey smell
- ✔️ It comes with tofu, great for wrapping together
- ✔️ The radish salad is sliced razor-thin, giving it a light, crisp texture

Piled with cabbage kimchi and radish kimchi on top — absolute honey flavor.

They say the bossam is sold in limited quantities each day, so if that's your main goal, I'd recommend going a bit earlier. There are two sizes — large (₩35,000) and medium (₩27,000). We ordered the medium since we wanted to sample a variety of other dishes too, and it was just the right amount.
Pepperoni potato pancake, 18,000 won
Jeongju Ilga's pepperoni potato pancake is ₩18,000. This was a somewhat unexpected combination.

The bottom is fried crispy and savory, while the top is covered in cheese and soft. Adding pepperoni on top brings a salty kick as well.

A single plate that gave both crispiness and softness — a dish that nailed both flavor and texture. 👍
They have quite a lot of pancake varieties (half-and-half pancake, shrimp-minari pancake, meat pancake, cheese-gat-kimchi pancake, and more), so I'm planning to try others next time.
Janchi guksu, 8,000 won, to finish the meal
Jeongju Ilga's jangchi guksu (banquet noodles) is ₩8,000. Honestly, we didn't order the noodles from the start. My husband said this was the dish he always ate here for hangover relief back when he lived in Mangwon-dong... he insisted it was so good, so we ended up ordering it as an add-on at the end. ㅠㅠ Topped with fried tofu and vegetables, with a strong perilla oil aroma, but oddly it's not greasy at all — it's refreshing.

Not spicy at all, but the broth has this clean, satisfying taste that kept crossing my mind. We ended up so full we walked all the way home, but I still think ordering the noodles was the right call! Hahaha.
Makgeolli with the bossam, beer with the potato pancake. This combo really... needs no explanation. 🍶

Is Jeongju Ilga better for dinner and drinks than a second-round bar?
If you're looking for a place to grab a drink in Mangwon-dong, I'd recommend Jeongju Ilga. Cooking-bars like this usually end up being second or third stops of the night, but Jeongju Ilga's dishes are substantial enough that it's better suited to a proper dinner-plus-drinks visit rather than something light. There are still so many pancake dishes we haven't tried, so I think we'll be back soon. 😊
