Mangwon-dong Korean bar: hanwoo yukhoe with cheese, Jeongju Ilga

My friend and I decided to have dinner around Mangwon and after looking around, we ended up at Jeongju Ilga (정주일가). It's a place where you can enjoy Korean food and drinks together, so I figured it'd be perfect for dinner plus a drink. Spoiler: what we ate that night was so good that I'm getting hungry again just writing this post.

Where is Jeongju Ilga in Mangwon-dong, and what are the hours?

Jeongju Ilga is located at 66 Poeun-ro, 1st floor, Mapo-gu, Seoul, and it's a spot in Mangwon-dong with the vibe of enjoying Korean food and drinks together. There are seats by the window that feel like an outdoor tent (yajang), so I imagine it'd be an amazing atmosphere on a nice-weather day.

We sat down with my friend, and honestly, in that kind of atmosphere, having good food and drinks felt like it would melt away the whole day's fatigue.

Hanwoo cheese yukhoe: the look alone is unfair

That day we ordered hanwoo cheese yukhoe (raw beef with cheese) and jangchi guksu (warm noodle soup). The hanwoo cheese yukhoe won me over the moment it arrived — the visuals alone. It's the kind of dish you can't not photograph, haha. It looked like the perfect drinking snack just from the presentation, and once we actually tasted it, the flavor matched the looks.

The yukhoe itself tasted great, and combined with the cheese, it added a rich, savory note. After one bite, my friend and I kept saying how good it was, back and forth. Both the visuals and the taste were, honestly, ridiculous — in a good way.

Yukhoe is usually the kind of dish that disappears fast when you're drinking and chatting, and this time was no exception — before we knew it, the plate was nearly empty. Even now, writing this, I suddenly want it again. Definitely ordering it next time.

Janchi guksu with the yukhoe: how the pairing tastes

I felt like yukhoe alone might leave us a bit unsatisfied, so we also ordered jangchi guksu. If the yukhoe was rich and savory, the noodle soup was the light, easy-to-eat counterpart — glad we ordered both. Eating the yukhoe as a drinking snack and then taking a bite of warm noodles kept us going for more.

At a Korean bar, you usually end up ordering a bunch of different dishes, but that day the yukhoe and jangchi guksu together were plenty for a full first meal, and they also worked great as drinking snacks.

Window seats with an outdoor-tent feel at Jeongju Ilga

So if you're looking for a good bar in Mangwon, I think this is a solid spot to handle both a meal and drinks in one go. One thing I personally loved about Jeongju Ilga was the seating that felt like an outdoor tent. Sitting by the window, you can feel a bit of the outside atmosphere while you eat, which would be even better on a nice day. It seemed great for a casual drink with friends, and also good for setting the mood on a date.

I personally like this outdoor-tent kind of seating, so that was another plus for me. It wasn't a stiff, formal vibe — more the kind of place you can relax, eat good food, and just talk. And the owner was really friendly too. Good food plus friendly service made for a genuinely pleasant meal.

Menus to try next time at Jeongju Ilga

Looking at the menu at Jeongju Ilga, it seems great for having dinner with drinks, but also for stopping by as a second-round spot after dinner elsewhere in Mangwon-dong. They also have jeongju bossam, beef brisket doenjang hotpot, and banban-jeon (half-and-half pancake), so I want to try those next time. The banban-jeon especially caught my interest — apparently you get bulgogi chive pancake and cheese kimchi pancake together.

We only had the hanwoo cheese yukhoe and jangchi guksu that day, but it was already fully satisfying, and the atmosphere was great too — my friend and I agreed, 'let's come back here.' Above all, the food was delicious enough that I'm definitely coming back. If you're in Mangwon and want good Korean food with a drink, or want to spend an evening with a friend somewhere with a great atmosphere, Jeongju Ilga is worth a visit. Next time I'm planning to properly work through the rest of the menu. It's the kind of place that satisfies whether it's your first stop or your second round, so I'll definitely be back :)
