Asan pasta restaurant with blue crab ppaeshe pasta: When You Bite

In short

When You Bite is a brunch café on Maegokhandeul 8-gil in Tangjeong-myeon, Asan, Chungcheongnam-do. This visit tried the ppaeshe pasta, with blue crab, shrimp and squid in a spicy tomato broth, and the Mediterranean pasta topped with a big piece of white fish; the seafood was fresh and clean-tasting with no fishy edge. A public parking lot right next door makes When You Bite easy to reach by car.

Where do you park at When You Bite in Tangjeong?

I loved the brunch food so much last time that I've been coming back to When You Bite in Tangjeong whenever I crave pasta, and I stopped by again on a nice sunny day. When you arrive, the place gives off a clean yet warm feeling. There's also a little outdoor spot in front where you can sit for a bit, which looked great for enjoying the outside atmosphere on a nice day.

🅿️ Best of all, When You Bite has a public parking lot right next door, so it's comfortable to visit by car. Parking stress is often the biggest headache when picking a restaurant, but Tangjeong When You Bite has great parking access — even beginners can manage.

Inside When You Bite: atmosphere and seating

Once you open the door, you get a cozy feeling that's a bit different from the exterior. Overall it's done in white tones with green plants placed here and there, so the space doesn't feel stuffy and instead feels comfortable. Thanks to the natural light pouring in through the big windows, the interior is quite bright and cheerful during the day.

Tangjeong When You Bite is run by a chef with 16 years of experience who cooks everything personally — even the sauces are made from scratch and used in the dishes. With that much time spent making all kinds of food in kitchens, you can tell every dish gets real care instead of relying on store-bought sauce, and that's why I get why it tastes so good. I've enjoyed my meal every single time I've come here ~~

Ppaeshe pasta: blue crab, shrimp and squid in a spicy tomato broth

Ppaeshe pasta

The ppaeshe pasta is different from the usual oil or cream pasta — you get to enjoy a spicy tomato-based broth together with seafood.

Eating it together with the seafood, you get that distinctive seafood umami coming through the broth, and having the pasta noodles together with the broth gives you a flavor that's clearly different from a regular tomato pasta. With crab, shrimp, squid and vegetables all mixed in, you get several different textures in just one plate. Above all, the ppaeshe pasta is a great fit for anyone who finds heavy cream pasta too rich.

The noodles were cooked just right. Even though it's a broth-based pasta, the noodles weren't mushy or overcooked at all — when I lifted them up with my chopsticks, they still had a nice bounce. The spicy tomato broth soaked well into the noodles, so even eating just the noodles alone wasn't bland, and taking a bite together with the crab or shrimp brought out the seafood's umami even more deeply.

The squid pieces were big too — chewy but large, so you have to cut them up to eat. Frozen seafood can sometimes give off a strong fishy smell, and I was especially worried since it's a broth pasta, wondering if the broth itself would end up smelling fishy too. But sure enough, the seafood at Tangjeong When You Bite was fresh, so there was zero fishy taste — if anything, it was clean and light.

Mediterranean pasta: one big piece of fish, whole

Mediterranean pasta

When You Bite has quite a variety of pasta, and the Mediterranean pasta feels a little different from regular pasta right from the name. Compared to familiar tomato or cream pastas, this one gives off a more exotic feel, so if you want to try something different, definitely give it a shot. The first thing that caught my eye was the sizable piece of fish sitting on top of the pasta — not just a small bit of fish mixed in, but a piece big enough to genuinely surprise me.

When you twirl the noodles and eat them, the light aroma of the oil hits first, and here and there you bite into olives that add a salty punch. Eating it together with the yellow tomatoes adds a fresh, sweet flavor that makes the whole thing taste bright. The yellow tomatoes and olives aren't just a garnish — there's enough of them to eat plenty alongside the noodles all the way to the last bite.

The surface of the fish was cooked to a nice, appetizing color, and when I gently flaked it with my fork, the flesh underneath fell apart softly. Taking a big bite of the fish together with the pasta noodles, the fish's clean flavor paired really well with the sauce's aroma. The noodles were well coated in the sauce rather than the sauce just sitting on top, so the harmony of flavors when eaten with the fish was better than I expected. Eating just the noodles, you get the sauce's aroma, and adding a big piece of fish on top brings a strong yet clean, savory flavor. The best part was that the fish wasn't fishy at all!! The Mediterranean pasta lets you enjoy clean fish together with pasta.

Dessert after the meal: ice cream with popcorn

After finishing the meal, they brought out ice cream as a final touch. After all that pasta I was craving something sweet, and when I saw popcorn sitting on top of the soft, cold ice cream I thought, huh? — but one bite in, I finished the whole thing. The ice cream and popcorn combo worked better than expected.

Is When You Bite worth a visit? Final verdict

Tangjeong When You Bite has a wide range on the menu — pasta, risotto, steak, sandwiches, brunch — so it works well whether you're after a simple brunch or a proper full meal. It also has a relaxed, café-like atmosphere, so I'd recommend it for a date, a meal with friends, or a family outing too.
