Sokcho bakery near Seorak Cable Car: potato bread to go, Bultan Gamja

In short

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is a same-day potato bread bakery café on Haksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon, open 09:00–18:00 daily with parking out front. On the way to the Seorak Cable Car, the writer's child fell asleep, so the stop became a quick look around the shop and a takeout order of potato bread and jjondeugi (chewy snack sticks) in snow crab, squid and sweet-and-spicy chicken flavors. Even without sitting down, Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread made the ideal snack for the drive home.

After playing our hearts out at the Sokcho beach, we stopped by Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread on our way to ride the Seorak Cable Car.

Inside the store, and why the visit became takeout only

Inside, the place was really nicely decorated with good vibes — big open windows with cute little props and interior details that were fun to look around.

They also had coffee, ade, and various teas on the menu, so it seemed like a great spot to enjoy alongside the bread. I really wanted to take my time browsing and resting at this well-known Sokcho bakery café, but since my daughter had fallen asleep, we ended up only doing takeout — a bit of a shame.

Still, we grabbed some Sokcho potato bread and jjondeugi to snack on for the rest of the drive :)

When I visited, they were baking bread as always! It was nice being able to watch the bread bake while ordering.

What kind of bread is Sokcho potato bread?

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread makes and sells potato bread fresh every morning at the main store — instead of adding artificial sweetness, they say they bring out flavor with cream cheese and butter to let the taste of Gangwon-do potatoes shine through.

The outside looks pitch black, like it's actually been burnt — but it's not literally charred. It's colored with squid ink to represent Sokcho's own hue. Sokcho is famous for its potatoes, and they use Gangwon-do potatoes, washed and baked fresh every morning, with the outside coated in ground black sesame, black beans, and black rice for extra nuttiness — this is the "burnt" potato bread. I also loved that they add no synthetic additives and follow a same-day-made, same-day-sold principle.

Sokcho jjondeugi: the snack we kept reaching for in the car

They also sell Sokcho jjondeugi, a chewy snack in snow crab, squid, and sweet-and-spicy chicken flavors, made to capture Sokcho's local character. Chewy and salty, it's the kind of addictive snack you can't stop eating. Savory yet light, I found myself grabbing one every time my mouth felt bored. The portion was generous too, so even one piece took a while to finish, haha. Totally recommend stocking up on these as snacks! It has a nostalgic taste, almost like it captures the flavor of the Sokcho coastline. After riding the Seorak Cable Car, hiking, and finishing up everything on our itinerary, I fell asleep on the drive home, and when I woke up—

Make sure to grab jjondeugi and potato bread for the drive back — for the driver's sake, haha.

How did the potato bread taste?

The potato bread had a chewy exterior and was packed with Sokcho potato on the inside — really light and delicious.

Taking a bite, the soft potato filling inside was absolutely packed in, giving a light, subtly sweet flavor that I really liked. This is a Sokcho bread that anyone who likes potatoes would enjoy, no question.

My daughter, who'd just woken up in the car, and I each had one, and the driver had one too — such a satisfying bread. Since we were in Sokcho, it also seemed like a great local specialty to buy as a gift. Just like we did, it's the perfect Sokcho bakery to grab something from and eat one piece at a time on the way home :)
