Korean restaurant in Gwangsan for sundae-guk breakfast: Sinjuokmi

In short

Sinjuokmi Suwan District branch is a Korean restaurant in Jangdeok-dong, Gwangsan, where I had breakfast with my family just after 9 a.m. on a weekday. The clear bracken fern sundae-guk and meat-only sundae-guk were generously filled, and I was pleased that the pork had no off smell.

Can you have sundae-guk early in the morning in Suwan District?

I went to Sinjuokmi Suwan District branch (신주옥미 수완지구점) for breakfast with my younger sibling, niece or nephew, and husband. My husband and I enjoy sundae-guk (Korean sausage soup) and dwaeji-gukbap (pork soup with rice), so we often order delivery or eat around Suwan District; this meal stood out for the clean-tasting pork and generous ingredients.

The restaurant is on the first floor at 52 Jangsin-ro 20beon-an-gil in Jangdeok-dong, Gwangsan-gu. For parking, use the public parking lot in the food alley directly in front of the restaurant.

I visited a little after 9 a.m. on a weekday. One table had a solo diner, and the restaurant was fairly quiet.

What is the restaurant like for families or groups?

I did not notice a pork smell inside, and the space was large and neatly decorated. With many tables, it looked suitable for family meals as well as groups.

What are the sundae-guk prices and the added suyuk option like?

The menu had several kinds of sundae-guk, starting at ₩10,000. I also noticed a discounted sundae-guk option for teenagers.

We ordered the meat-only gat sundae-guk for ₩10,000 and the clear bracken fern gat sundae-guk for ₩11,000, then added the freshly boiled suyuk set for ₩3,000. I liked being able to have tender suyuk (boiled pork slices) alongside the sundae-guk.

How did I use the side dishes and self-service bar?

The basic side dishes arrived first. I could freely take more side dishes from the self-service bar as needed.

The self-service bar also had somyeon (thin wheat noodles). I brought some to add to the broth at the end of the meal.

How were the clear bracken fern gat sundae-guk and its ingredients?

Our sundae-guk arrived without a long wait.

Sinjuokmi sundae-guk ordered for breakfast

I had the clear bracken fern gat sundae-guk, introduced as a signature dish, with the suyuk set. The added set came with suyuk and pork offal.

The bubbling earthenware bowl was generously filled with bracken fern, sundae, and offal. The broth tasted deep and rich, and the generous ingredients suited me, since I prefer ingredients to broth.

The handmade sundae was generously filled.

It was filling, with a variety of lean pork and offal. I do not usually eat much breakfast, but I finished a full bowl of rice that day.

How were the added suyuk and meat-only gat sundae-guk?

Sinjuokmi stated that it boils pork four times daily: at noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m., and 6 p.m. I liked that neither the suyuk nor the pork in the sundae-guk had an off smell. My sibling and husband, who were eating the suyuk, wanted more, so we ordered another serving.

My husband's meat-only gat sundae-guk had plenty of lean pork. He sprinkled it with perilla seed powder and finished the bowl.

After finishing my rice and ingredients, I added the somyeon I had brought from the self-service bar to the broth.

Somyeon added to sundae-guk broth at meal's end

Adding somyeon to the remaining broth made for a filling end to the meal.

I liked the quiet morning atmosphere, the clean taste of the pork, and the generous ingredients on this visit. When the weather turns chilly and I start craving hot sundae-guk, I would like to return.
