First impressions of Gang Galbitang Seomyeon on a quiet afternoon

The moment I opened the door at Gang Galbitang Seomyeon, the sound of a ttukbaegi (stone pot) lid being lifted and the smell of simmering ribs hit me at once. It was daytime so there weren't many people around — quiet, actually in a good way. The tables were spaced generously too, so sitting alone didn't feel awkward at all.

When I want something with broth in Seomyeon I usually head for a gukbap (rice-and-soup) place, but this time a friend recommended this galbitang specialty spot, so I tried it for the first time. The staff greeted me warmly as soon as I walked in, which made a good first impression.

I scooped up the broth first and took a spoonful — it seemed mild at first, but a beat after swallowing, that rich, distinctive short-rib savoriness rose up the back of my throat. By the second spoonful, knowing that flavor was coming, my hand moved faster. By the third, the initial mildness was completely gone and I just kept spooning it up.

The meat was so tender it fell apart with the slightest press of my chopsticks, and the meat picked off the bone came away clean, with no tendon. Slurping the jungmyeon noodles along with it, the chewy noodles held the broth and released another burst of it with every bite. These noodles are usually meant for galbi guksu, but they worked really well dropped into the soup too, and the portion was generous, making the meal filling.

There's a separate self-serve banchan (side dish) bar, so I could grab more of whatever I needed myself. No need to ask staff for a kkakdugi or kimchi refill, so there was no awkwardness about it. A few other solo diners were around too, all eating comfortably at their own pace. One table even had a daytime drink going.

You know how at a dakbal (spicy chicken feet) place you sometimes fry rice in the leftover sauce? Here the broth was rich enough that its depth carried through to the very last spoonful. I mixed rice into it too, and couldn't stop until I could see the bottom of the ttukbaegi.

What could be better at Gang Galbitang

Honestly, if I had to nitpick, it would be nice to see a drinking-food side like suyuk (boiled pork slices) on the menu. Other than that, nothing really bothered me.

This place suits anyone wanting a hearty solo meal, or needing hot broth for breakfast or as a hangover cure. It's an easy option the morning after a work dinner, or for a quick stop during lunch break. There's parking support too — 30 minutes free at the nearby Blue Parking Lot, so driving there isn't a hassle. If you're looking for a bowl of galbitang in Seomyeon, this is worth a visit.

The portion definitely wasn't small — mixing rice into the broth left me completely full. Next time I want to try the spicy red-broth version and the galbi guksu too. With three menu items, there's fun in choosing something different each visit.
