Seocho katsu lunch set that fills up before noon: Yangjae Katsu

In short

Yangjae Katsu is a katsu (Japanese-style cutlet) restaurant in Seocho, Seoul, a 9-minute walk from Yangjae Station Exit 8. Two coworkers went for lunch and ordered the perilla oil soba with hire katsu (pork fillet cutlet) set and the cheese katsu with shrimp tempura set, ₩17,500 each, and Yangjae Katsu was already full before noon. The perilla oil soba beat expectations on the noodle cooking, the sauce and the portion, making it the dish worth coming back for.

Why two office workers picked Yangjae Katsu for lunch in Yangjae

As someone who works in Yangjae, I usually go to lunch with 5-6 teammates, but today, for whatever reason, everyone else was either on half-day leave or out for work, so I ended up alone with just one junior teammate.

It had been a while since it was just the two of us, so I wondered what nice lunch we could have — and wait, there was a restaurant we hadn't been to yet?! No way, that's unacceptable😱 No need to think twice, let's go go go! The breeze was gentle, the weather was so nice🎶 And that's how we arrived at,

The sign made only of consonants is really cute. I've passed by this place countless times and only now am I coming here😅

How long is the wait at Yangjae Katsu, and why go before noon?

It's not even noon yet and it's already fully booked🤪 That means it's a real hidden gem. Plus, seeing so many male customers, that just confirms it, no need to say more?!

In fact, restaurants near Yangjae Station absolutely!!! require visiting before noon!!! Even a little late and you're stuck waiting. We thought we'd be waiting too, but spotted an empty two-person table in the corner. Yay!!! Lucky!!! We quickly sat down and ordered.

Yangjae Katsu menu: single dish or set?

Ordering is done via kiosk. There are really, really many menu items.

À la carte and set menu board at Yangjae Katsu

The menu is divided into à la carte and set options, and besides tonkatsu, there's also soba and udon, so there are plenty of choices. If you don't have a big appetite, à la carte should be enough, but if you want to try several things, go for the set!

Yangjae Katsu's recommended menu items are the hire katsu, special premium loin katsu, and cheese katsu! So our picks were the cheese katsu + shrimp tempura for ₩17,500, and the perilla oil soba + hire katsu for ₩17,500. Two big eaters meeting up, there's no giving up a set menu😋

Ordered set menus laid out on the table

Perilla oil soba with hire katsu set: the soba that surprised us

The hire katsu (fillet cutlet) is made from tender, juicy tenderloin with a light, soft texture. The perilla oil soba brings together special sauce and perilla oil in harmony with the chewy buckwheat noodles.

Even though it's a set menu, nothing feels like an afterthought side dish — everything is served generously and full.

Hire katsu with lemon juice and wasabi

Squeeze some lemon juice over the soft hire katsu and top it with wasabi — how good is that?!

On top of that, this perilla oil soba exceeded expectations! From the noodle cooking to the sauce to the portion, nothing was lacking — pure perfection! I think I need to go back again soon just for this perilla oil soba🤤

Cheese katsu with shrimp tempura set: a whole black tiger shrimp

Cheese katsu made with natural mozzarella cheese, and shrimp tempura made from a whole large black tiger shrimp, fried whole! Plus a nicely thoughtful tartar sauce👍🏻

Cheese katsu with stretchy natural mozzarella cheese

Look at this cheese, overflowing🧀 With cheese stretching so long, I couldn't tell if I was eating tonkatsu or eating cheese🤣 And the shrimp?! Really huge, huge shrimp — who knew you'd meet tiger shrimp at Yangjae Katsu🤣🤣 The batter was also super crispy.

How to get the most out of a meal at Yangjae Katsu

How to enjoy Yangjae Katsu the best way! No matter what, for me it's wasabi!!! Since it's cooked right after ordering, you get to enjoy really crispy, piping hot katsu.

There's also a review event going on, so don't forget to check it out!

Yangjae Katsu review event notice

I should come back next week with the coworkers who couldn't join us this time. Yangjae Katsu keeps coming to mind (written as 'katsu' but read as 'soba' in my head). It also fits perfectly with this kind of season!

Everyone!! If you're looking for a good tonkatsu place near Yangjae Station, I recommend Yangjae Katsu with its variety of katsu menu items! There are single seats too, so solo dining is possible!! Whether you come with two people or four, order udon and soba to share, and that day will be a feast!
