Where Nopo Dwaeji Aewol is, and the 5pm wait

Nopo Dwaeji Aewol, a black pork restaurant in Jeju! I went at 5pm, and even then there was already a CatchTable waitlist — that's how popular this local black pork spot is.

By the way, there's a large parking lot behind the Aewol black pork restaurant, so it's a good recommendation if you're looking for a place in Aewol with easy parking.

The Jeju restaurant has a clean, upscale atmosphere, making it comfortable for family visits, and it's also set up well for group dining.

The day I visited, lots of people came for group gatherings and family meals — the vibe suits not just date-night dinners but also larger get-togethers.

We ordered Nopo Dwaeji Aewol's signature black pork geun-gogi 600g (₩72,000) with kelp rice (₩1,000). They also have a good-value lunch special, so it looks like a solid choice for lunch in Aewol too.

The side dishes at Nopo Dwaeji Aewol are clean and simple, and since it's a grilled-for-you restaurant, you can just relax and eat. Wraps and extra sides are at a self-serve corner.

Nopo Dwaeji Aewol is corkage-free, so you can bring whatever drinks you like. Just note that glasses aren't provided for corkage, so bring your own.

Barley-straw sear first, then charcoal: how the staff grill it
Nopo Dwaeji says they select good cuts and age their black pork in a professionally managed aging room. Maybe because of that aging process, the meat's vivid color and firm texture stood out right from the start.

What really stood out here was their method — searing the black pork with barley straw first, then finishing it a second time over charcoal. The initial sear locks in the juices, and the charcoal at the end adds smoky flavor and brings out the meat's richness.

Watching the meat brown nicely on the grill really made me feel like I was properly eating black pork in Jeju.
And since it's a Jeju restaurant that grills the black pork for you, it was easy to just sit back and enjoy. Recommended as a date spot, a family meal, or a group gathering place in Jeju.
How the 600g black pork neck and belly tasted

Nopo Dwaeji Aewol's geun-gogi comes as pork neck (mokssal) and belly (samgyeopsal) — the neck cooks first, then you get to the belly.

The neck we ate first was thick and stayed moist — an aged cut where you could taste the juices more the more you chewed.

It wasn't dry at all, with a chewy texture anyone would enjoy! True to the barley-straw sear, the meat's own flavor came through even on its own.

When you're eating Jeju black pork geun-gogi, the melljeot (fermented anchovy sauce) you dip it in matters — and Nopo Dwaeji Aewol's version wasn't salty or fishy, which I appreciated.

And Nopo Dwaeji's kelp rice is packed with umami, so I really recommend ordering it alongside the meat!

Next up was the thick-cut belly (samgyeopsal) from the geun-gogi — the size alone was impressive, and it stayed moist throughout.

With just the right amount of fat, it was soft yet nutty, and the aged belly had a satisfying firm texture. Being seared first and then finished on charcoal meant the outside browned nicely while the inside stayed juicy.

The belly at Nopo Dwaeji Aewol was especially good — that chewy texture unique to black pork stayed strong right to the last bite.

This dressed lettuce salad was also a hidden gem — paired with the meat, it added a whole different flavor, making it a Gwakji Beach spot you'll keep reaching back to.

After the meat, the mul-naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) we ordered was a solid, easy way to finish. Besides naengmyeon, I heard their black pork kimchi jjigae (stew) and crab doenjang jjigae are also popular.
Restrooms and cleanliness at Nopo Dwaeji Aewol

The restrooms at this Aewol restaurant are inside, clean, and separated by gender — perfect for a group gathering spot in Aewol.

Overall, from service to cleanliness, this place is well kept, so I'd recommend it as a black pork restaurant in Jeju.
Verdict: 4 out of 5
I think black pork is a must-eat on any Jeju trip, and Nopo Dwaeji Aewol stood out for how they sear aged black pork with barley straw before grilling it over charcoal for extra flavor. The juiciness and chewy texture of the thick-cut geun-gogi, plus the charcoal aroma, made for a proper meat experience, and finishing with mul-naengmyeon rounded it out nicely — a satisfying meal, and convenient since they grill it for you.
If you're looking for black pork in Aewol, a meat restaurant in Jeju, or a black pork spot near Gwakji Beach, this one's worth considering. Cheers for today~
