A Jamsil hanwoo restaurant and Seokchon Station beef spot: Sutbul Seonghwa (숯불성화). It has parking, and it's great for a Songnidan-gil date or a wedding-invitation gathering.

Sutbul Seonghwa, a Jamsil Korean BBQ restaurant with parking

Sutbul Seonghwa is a charcoal-grilled hanwoo restaurant near Seokchon Station in Jamsil, with parking and private rooms for a quiet meal. When you plan a dinner in Jamsil, one worry sneaks up on you: finding a restaurant you can actually park at. This time I was looking for a nice hanwoo place with my husband, who loves Korean beef, and ended up at Sutbul Seonghwa.

Parking was possible, and there were rooms, so we could eat in private. The meat quality, the staff's grilling service and the neat side dishes all satisfied us, so let me introduce it.

What are the atmosphere and rooms like at Sutbul Seonghwa?

The restaurant is bigger than I expected, with hall seats, partitioned seats and rooms. The hall has plenty of seating, and the partitioned spots aren't too close to the next table, which I liked.

We were shown to a room. It had coat hangers, and thanks to the ceiling system air conditioner we ate in real comfort even in midsummer.

You can have whisky and wine here, and the mood is calm, so it seems perfect for a blind date or a date, and also for family meals or important gatherings. For this level of hanwoo restaurant in Jamsil, I think it would be a safe choice for hosting guests too.

Several cuts at once with the Happy Day platter

Platter set menu at Sutbul Seonghwa

We ordered the Happy Day platter (행복한날 모둠세트), which came with sirloin, premium ribeye and wine-marinated rib fingers. The menu had a variety of set combinations for tasting several cuts, and we picked the Happy Day platter.

Sirloin, premium ribeye and wine-marinated rib fingers, all in one set. I think it's a good choice for first-time visitors.

Staff grilling service and the sirloin

At Sutbul Seonghwa the staff grill the meat for you, so we could chat and eat comfortably.

The biggest plus of a place that grills for you is that each cut is cooked to its best doneness, so you really get the flavor of the meat. The staff grilled it cut by cut.

Well-grilled sirloin at Sutbul Seonghwa

The sirloin, which I enjoyed most, was the most memorable part of this meal. It was juicy and melted softly in the mouth. So good!

What are the side dishes at Sutbul Seonghwa like?

Side dish spread at Sutbul Seonghwa

The side dishes are clean in style, bringing out the beef flavor instead of using strong seasoning. While the meat cooked I tried them one by one, and every single one was impressive.

Celery pickle and lemon-dressed scallion salad
Grapefruit-dressed minari and wasabi mushrooms
  • Celery pickle: even I, who don't usually eat celery, could eat it easily thanks to its mild taste
  • Scallion salad (pajeori): lightly dressed with salt, pepper and lemon dressing instead of chili flakes, so it goes really well with the meat
  • Minari (water dropwort): freshly tossed with grapefruit dressing
  • Mushrooms: a different kind of charm, with a wasabi seasoning and a sharp kick of spice

Apart from the radish salad (musaengchae), there was almost no red seasoning, and the lineup neatly cuts the richness that hanwoo can have. I was impressed.

Individual pickled onions and salt and sauce plate

Sutbul Seonghwa's house salt with katsuobushi

Each person gets their own pickled onions and sauce plate. Besides Maldon salt, wasabi and whole-grain mustard, there was a salt I'd never seen. It was so good that I asked, and it turned out to be Sutbul Seonghwa's own house salt made with 5 ingredients, one of which is katsuobushi (bonito flakes). It went extremely well with the beef's aroma.

With this much care even in the side dishes, I thought it would be a great place for hosting guests or holding a gathering.

Joseon Hyangmi rice and hanwoo jjapaguri too

The rice at Sutbul Seonghwa is cooked with Joseon Hyangmi (조선향미) rice, and a nutty aroma spread as soon as it was brought over. Meat alone felt like not enough, so we ordered rice and a meal item too. Putting well-grilled hanwoo on freshly cooked rice, I thought: good thing we ordered a bowl of rice.

And the hanwoo jjapaguri (짜파게티, black bean instant noodles), which I ordered out of curiosity, was satisfying too.

The price is on the high side, but it had a generous amount of hanwoo, and the savory depth of jjapaguri plus the meat's flavor made it a fun, different dish. You can also order it not spicy, so it should be fine to enjoy with kids.

Dessert Excellent: order two if there are two of you

Excellent ice cream dessert at Sutbul Seonghwa
Excellent served on a chilled plate

The dessert Excellent (엑설런트, an ice cream treat) is served one per order, so if two of you visit, order two. From the photo I thought two would come out, haha. Best of all, they chilled the plate too so the ice cream wouldn't melt easily, which was a really nice touch.

Excellent dessert plated on a dish

It's a familiar Excellent, but plated like this it feels like a slightly more special dessert.
