We went out for dinner as a whole family of four after a long time. Now that the kids are grown, everyone's schedules are different, so a day when all four of us can eat together has become surprisingly rare haha.

Since we were all finally together, we wanted a menu we could eat heartily. Our family loves duck, so this time we properly enjoyed 1kg of spicy stir-fried duck at Gunsan Jumulreok.

When we arrived in the evening, the big Gunsan Jumulreok sign was lit up brightly, so it stood out even from a distance. With the words 'duck specialty restaurant' and the name highlighted in yellow, it would be easy to find even on a first visit.

Gunsan Jumulreok in Nawon-dong: the building and the dining room

The exterior of Gunsan Jumulreok felt cozy and familiar rather than flashy like the newer trendy restaurants. Dark wood walls and windows, along with a small staircase up to the entrance, all came together to give off a friendly vibe fitting for a duck specialty restaurant.

Even from outside, we could see customers eating through the windows, and since it was dinner time, the inside was pretty lively too.

Interior with wood-tone tables and rattan-style lighting

Once inside, the place was bigger than it looked from outside. Tables weren't just near the entrance — the space extended further back, with tables generously placed throughout.

Overall, wood-tone tables and chairs blended with wooden pillars and window frames for a warm, comfortable feel. The rattan-style lighting hanging from the ceiling was soft and added to the cozy atmosphere.

There were also larger tables in the back for groups, so it looked good not just for family outings but for dining with several people. Baby chairs were available too, making it convenient to visit with kids.

What's on the self-bar and side dish tray

One corner of Gunsan Jumulreok had a separate self-bar. From lettuce and peppers to scallion shreds, seasoned bean sprouts, pickled onions and other side dishes that go well with duck, we could take as much as we needed.

Plates and bowls were neatly stacked up top too, making it easy to use. When eating spicy duck, you keep reaching for more lettuce or scallion shreds, so it was nice to be able to grab them ourselves.

Once we sat down, the basic side dishes came out generously. Lettuce, peppers, garlic and ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) were a given, plus cabbage salad, kimchi, seasoned bean sprouts, scallion shreds and pickled onions — a full spread. The table was already packed before the main dish even arrived.

For a richly seasoned dish like spicy stir-fried duck, the side dishes matter, and the tangy pickled onions and crunchy scallion shreds were great to eat alongside it.

What our family ordered that day was 1kg of spicy stir-fried duck for ₩59,000. Looking at the menu, spicy stir-fried duck and raw duck loin were each 1kg for ₩59,000, smoked duck was 800g for ₩59,000, the half-and-half set was 1kg for ₩65,000, and the half portion was 500g for ₩35,000.

The 1kg spicy stir-fried duck was listed as serving 3-4 people, which was perfect for our family of four. Soon after, a huge hot plate of spicy stir-fried duck came out, and the first impression was simply — this.

Wow, so hearty haha. The seasoned duck meat filled the giant hot plate, with big chunks of potato tucked in between. The red sauce coated the duck evenly, and it looked delicious even before being cooked.

Minari, enoki mushrooms, onions and other side vegetables

Alongside it were plenty of vegetables to cook together — minari (water dropwort), enoki mushrooms, onions and more. Once the flame was on and the meat started getting flipped, a delicious smell rose up quickly.

The deep red sauce, once mixed with the juices from the duck, started to thicken up, and from that point the whole thing looked absolutely incredible haha.

How does the spicy stir-fried duck taste?

The well-cooked duck had the sauce soaked in nicely, tasting great on its own and even better with white rice. The sweet-spicy sauce paired well with the savory taste of duck, and the meat was soft yet had just the right chewiness, so my chopsticks kept going back for more.

The potatoes in between also soaked up plenty of sauce and were a real treat. Eating fluffy potato together with the duck was a different kind of delicious.

Lettuce wrap with duck meat and scallion shreds

It's even better wrapped in lettuce. Spread out a lettuce leaf, pile on plenty of duck, add scallion shreds, a bit of garlic and ssamjang, and take a big bite — pure honey haha.

Adding in pickled onions here and there, and some kimchi too, meant we could keep enjoying different flavors even though it was the same spicy stir-fried duck. Most of all, the sauce went so well with rice that we kept adding more bowls that day.

In the end, the four of us ate six bowls of rice total lol. Rice was ₩1,000 per bowl, so ₩6,000 in total.

The free pot of duck soup

While we were eating happily, a hot duck soup came out too. This duck soup wasn't something we ordered — it was complimentary! I expected something like a small soup bowl for a freebie, but it came out generously in a whole pot, which was a nice surprise.

It had duck bones and meat in it, topped generously with minari and vegetables, and once it was bubbling away, the broth tasted really deep and savory. After enjoying the sweet and spicy stir-fried duck, taking a spoonful of the warm duck soup in between felt soothing to the stomach.

Scooping up the fragrant minari together with duck meat was tasty too, and there was fun in picking the meat off the bones bit by bit.

The stir-fried duck portion was already generous, but having the duck soup on top made the meal feel even more filling.

Finishing with 2 servings of fried rice

We were already plenty full at this point. But it would be such a shame to finish spicy stir-fried duck without fried rice haha. So we ended up adding 2 orders of fried rice! Fried rice was ₩3,000 per serving, so ₩6,000 for two.

They mixed rice into the leftover duck and sauce on the hot plate and stir-fried it evenly, and the fried rice filled the giant plate completely. Duck meat and vegetables were mixed between the grains of rice, and the sauce had soaked deep into the rice, so it looked delicious just to look at.

Fried rice really tastes best spread out thin on the hot plate and pressed down slightly. The parts soaked with sauce were tasty, but the bits of rice touching the plate got slightly crispy and nutty, and I couldn't put my spoon down. The fact that a family who'd already eaten six bowls of rice still finished two orders of fried rice kind of says it all about how good the food was lol.

What a family of four paid: ₩71,000

What our family ate that day was 1kg of spicy stir-fried duck for ₩59,000, 6 bowls of rice for ₩6,000, and 2 orders of fried rice for ₩6,000. And the duck soup came out free. For a total of ₩71,000, the four of us enjoyed a really full, hearty dinner.

Honestly, while the delicious spicy stir-fried duck was great, what stays with me more is that all four of us sat down and ate together. When the kids were little, eating together was just a given, but now that they're grown, even matching schedules for the four of us isn't easy anymore.

Sitting around one table again after a long time, cooking the duck together, saying it was delicious, adding more rice, and sharing the last of the fried rice — it was such an ordinary dinner, but it felt really good. In front of good food, family conversations always seem to flow more too haha.

Gunsan Jumulreok was great for a comfortable meal with family, from the cozy and welcoming atmosphere to the generous tables, self-bar and hearty side dishes. Above all, the huge hot plate piled high with spicy stir-fried duck was impressive — wrapping the sweet-spicy, well-cooked duck in lettuce, eating it with white rice, warming up with the free duck soup, and finishing with fried rice made it feel like a proper full meal.

A dinner spent happily and fully with all four family members together after a long time. It's a place I'd want to come back to whenever duck comes to mind for a family meal out in Gunsan. Next time, I'd like to try the raw duck loin, or the half-and-half set that lets you have both stir-fried duck and loin together haha.
