A Gunsan favorite: filling up on duck jumulreok and fried rice
While traveling around Gunsan and wondering what to eat, I wanted a hearty proper meal this time, so I went to try duck jumulreok (spicy stir-fried duck) :) You end up snacking on all sorts of things while traveling, but you've gotta have at least one real meal, right? haha

Dishes like duck jumulreok, served generously on a big grill plate, are especially good for eating with a group. This place, Gunsan Jumulreok, had a wide range of duck dishes — duck jumulreok, fresh duck roast, smoked duck, and a half-and-half set.

Side dishes were self-serve, so I never felt short on anything and could eat comfortably. If you like duck meat and happen to be in Gunsan, this place might be worth checking out!

Gunsan Jumulreok menu and prices
At Gunsan Jumulreok, duck jumulreok 1kg is ₩59,000, and there's a big menu board inside so you can check prices at a glance. Fresh duck roast 1kg was ₩59,000, smoked duck 800g was ₩59,000, the half-and-half set 1kg was ₩65,000, a half order 500g was ₩35,000, and fresh pork belly 180g was ₩15,000.

Duck jumulreok and fresh duck roast at 1kg are listed as one whole duck, serving 3–4 people, so it seemed like a good fit for a family visit too. The meal menu was also pretty varied.

Water/bibim naengmyeon (cold noodles) was ₩6,000, cold mukbap ₩5,000, a bowl of rice ₩1,000, self-serve fried rice ₩1,500, fried rice ₩3,000, doenjang sul-bap ₩7,000, hangover seafood ramyeon ₩7,000, and nurungji (scorched rice) and doenjang jjigae were ₩3,000 each.

That day we ate the duck jumulreok and finished off with fried rice — and honestly, with seasoned meat like this, you haven't truly finished the meal until you've had the fried rice too haha

What the dining room at Gunsan Jumulreok looks like
The inside of Gunsan Jumulreok wasn't flashy — more of a comfortable, neighborhood duck restaurant feel, good for sitting down and just eating. There were several tables, and a spot in the back that looked like a separated area, which seemed handy for family meals or larger groups.
Each table had a portable gas burner, so you grill the duck jumulreok yourself and keep it warm as you eat. Duck meat really is better sizzling hot off the grill than cooling down on the plate :)

Self-serve banchan: take as much as you'll eat
Gunsan Jumulreok also came with a good variety of basic side dishes. Kimchi, garlic, ssamjang (dipping sauce), pickled onions, various salads, and wrap vegetables — all things that go well with duck. I especially liked how generous the wrap vegetables were.

The duck jumulreok is already seasoned, so it's tasty on its own, but wrapping it in lettuce with a bit of ssamjang made it taste even cleaner. And here, extra banchan is self-serve.

If any side dish runs low, you just take the empty bowl over and refill it yourself with as much as you'll actually eat. No need to keep calling the staff over, and you can only take what you like — actually pretty convenient. Of course, as the sign says, only take as much as you'll eat!

The 1kg duck jumulreok hits the grill
The main event of the day was, of course, the duck jumulreok. The duck meat was coated evenly in red seasoning, mixed in with onions and mushrooms, and once it hit the grill, the smell alone was already amazing. The seasoning soaks evenly into the meat, and as it stir-fries with the vegetables, it leaves this rich, slightly bubbling sauce on the grill plate — which is exactly the kind of taste that makes you think of rice haha. The duck meat alone is great, but picking up onions or mushrooms in between changes up the texture, so I kept reaching for more.

For me, eating it wrapped was still the best way. Spread out a generous lettuce leaf, pile on well-cooked duck jumulreok, add some garlic or ssamjang, and it's a full mouthful! Even though it's seasoned meat, eating it with wrap vegetables kept it feeling light all the way through.

Finishing with fried rice in the leftover sauce
Once you've eaten a good amount of the duck jumulreok at Gunsan Jumulreok, it'd be a shame to stop there. We finished off with fried rice too. After eating the duck jumulreok, the sauce left on the grill plate is already packed with the flavor of the meat and vegetables — of course it pairs perfectly with rice fried right into it.
It's funny how even with a pretty full stomach, there's always room for fried rice haha. If you're visiting for duck, I'd recommend saving a bit of room from the start for the fried rice finish. Looking at the menu board, self-serve fried rice and regular fried rice were listed separately, so just check which style you want when ordering.

Is Gunsan Jumulreok worth a stop in Gunsan?
While traveling around Gunsan and snacking on this and that, there comes a point where you just want a solid meal of meat and rice. The 1kg of duck jumulreok was a generous portion, and with the wrap vegetables and various side dishes, it made for a really satisfying meal.

Most of all, the combo of duck jumulreok followed by that final fried rice was really satisfying. Beyond duck jumulreok, there's also fresh duck roast, smoked duck, and the half-and-half set, so it seems like a good spot for a family with different tastes to visit together.

If you're looking for a family dinner spot in Gunsan or a hearty local restaurant to try while traveling, a full spread of duck jumulreok is a solid choice :) And if you love fried rice like me, don't skip that finishing bowl!
