Suwon Korean restaurant with spicy sundae soup: Gohyangok

Lately, the mornings and evenings have definitely started to feel cooler. On days like this, I find myself craving something with a nice hot broth.

While wondering what to have for weekend lunch, I visited Gohyangok Spicy Sundaeguk Suwon Omokcheon Branch (고향옥얼큰순대국 수원 오목천점), a great sundae soup spot in Suwon! From regular sundae soup to spicy sundae soup and the hinoki assortment, there were so many menu options that I tried a bit of everything.

Is weekend lunch parking easy?

We visited at lunchtime on the weekend. Since it was the weekend, I worried that it would be crowded and parking might be difficult. But the parking area here was seriously spacious.

There is parking in front of the restaurant, and because it is so large, we parked without any trouble. Lots of people drive out for meals around Gosaek-dong and Omokcheon-dong, so it was lovely to be able to park comfortably even at weekend lunchtime.

Seating for family meals and solo diners alike

The restaurant interior was really clean. There were comfy four-person sofa tables like these too, so it looked great for a family meal!

On one side, there were around ten solo seats that were perfect for eating alone. There were quite a few people actually having gukbap by themselves, as well as lots of families dining together.

They also had high chairs for babies and disposable aprons ready!

And something I found interesting was the utensil rest! I think this was my first time seeing a restaurant set out utensil rests separately. Usually, you put down a napkin and place your spoon and chopsticks on it, right? Having a dedicated rest here made everything feel even neater *.*

Each table came set with salted shrimp, spicy seasoning paste, and perilla seed powder.

There was also a self-service bar, so you could help yourself to as many extra side dishes as you needed +_+ They had seokbakji (cubed radish kimchi), young-radish kimchi, peppers, onions, and somyeon noodle add-ins.

How should you choose your sundae soup?

There were honestly more choices than I expected, right? The sundae soup came in spicy and regular versions, and you could choose either meat only or sundae only for the fillings. I love sundae, so I chose the spicy sundae soup with sundae only. You can also add the hinoki assortment and enjoy it as a set!

Ta-da—our sundae soup arrived bubbling away in a ttukbaegi (earthenware pot)! Since it was the spicy version, it came in a red broth. It was topped with quite a generous amount of chives, too.

It was already seasoned, so there was no real need to add salted shrimp or anything else. The seasoning was just right as it was. It was delicious even eaten exactly like this +_+

Because it was called spicy, I expected the broth to be very hot, but it was not overly spicy—just hot and pleasantly punchy! It had exactly the kind of flavor you want for a hangover cure +_+

Since I chose sundae only, there was also loads of glutinous-rice sundae inside. I mixed in rice, ate every last bit, and cleared the bowl +_+ I think I would order the spicy one again next time!

A hinoki assortment for tasting several things at once

The hinoki assortment that came with it included boiled pork bossam, Abai sundae, jeonbyeong (pan-fried filled pancake), and galbi dumplings. It was so nice to be able to try a piece of each thing!

Makguksu topped with slushy ice

We also ordered a makguksu (buckwheat noodles) to go with everything. A large bowl arrived with slushy ice floating on top and plenty of cucumber, eolgari kimchi, and shredded seaweed. It looks refreshing just to see it, doesn't it?

I first tried it without adding any extra vinegar or mustard! The sauce itself was tangy and nicely seasoned, so I really enjoyed it just as it came ><

With easy parking, clean facilities, and above all, delicious spicy sundae soup, Gohyangok Spicy Sundaeguk Suwon Omokcheon Branch in Gosaek-dong, Suwon, was a winner! You can tailor both the spice level and fillings to your taste, and the hinoki menu was great too :)
