I was trying to decide on dinner near Sunae Station and suddenly craved jokbal (braised pig's trotters) for the first time in a while, so I ended up at Wangchang Jokbal (왕창족발) Sunae Station branch. 😊

Wangchang Jokbal is right in front of Sunae Station, so it's really easy to get to. You walk out of the station, go just a little way and you see it, which makes it perfect for a meal after work or a casual drink.

The restaurant was clean and fairly spacious overall. ✨ People sometimes picture jokbal places as a bit old-fashioned, but this branch is kept comfortably tidy, so it was easy to relax and eat.

Not long after we ordered, the doenjang (fermented soybean paste) soup came out first, followed by basic sides like chive salad, bossam kimchi, ssamjang (seasoned dipping paste) and salted shrimp. 🍲 The soup was better than I expected: a mild, nutty doenjang aroma, served piping hot, great for a spoonful before the jokbal arrives. 😊

The chive salad, bossam kimchi, ssamjang and salted shrimp all go well with jokbal, so I was happy with the lineup. 🥬 The chive salad was especially good. 😊 The bossam kimchi had a nice savory depth with a little sweetness, and my chopsticks kept going back to it. 🥢

How many people can a medium half-and-half jokbal feed?

I ordered the medium half-and-half of Wangchang original jokbal and spicy jokbal, and it felt like plenty for 3-4 people. And then, the star of the night arrived. ✨ The half-and-half spread 🐷🔥 looked generous from the first glance. I ordered the medium, but there was much more than I expected. 😊

Wangchang original jokbal

The original jokbal had chewy skin and moist meat. It came stacked in layers and looked appetizing just sitting there. Glossy and glistening, it was moist and tender. 😊 The skin was springy and chewy while the meat stayed juicy, so the texture was great. I barely noticed any gamey smell, and the rich, nutty flavor of jokbal really came through!

How spicy is the spicy jokbal?

The spicy jokbal 🔥 was coated in plenty of red sauce and looked fiery, but it wasn't just hot. The sweet-and-spicy sauce had real savory depth, so I kept reaching for more. 😋

My combo with refilled chive salad

The chive salad here is refillable, and it was so good that I got a refill partway through. 🥬 Piling chive salad on a piece of jokbal, then having it with bossam kimchi, then a spoonful of doenjang soup was such a satisfying combination. 😊 The portions were so generous that I stayed full and happy the whole meal.

The sauce on the spicy jokbal had soaked in well, so every bite tasted rich. The heat is moderate, so even people who can't handle spice could try it. I think it would also be great as a drinking snack. 🍻 Alternating between the original and the spicy meant I never got tired of it and enjoyed it to the end.

Does steamed egg come as a side too?

Partway through the meal, the staff also brought us steamed egg as a side. 🥚 It was fluffy and puffed up, and I liked that it came out hot. A spoonful after the spicy jokbal smoothed things over in my mouth. 😊 With the steamed egg, the table felt even more generous.
