Nurungji chip bingsu at a Sehwa-ri café in Jeju: Sigan-eul Damda
In short
Sigan-eul Damda Gujwa is a quiet dessert café on Pyeongdae 7-gil in Gujwa-eup, Jeju, tucked into the back lanes of Pyeongdae-ri and Sehwa-ri. The writer ordered the nurungji-cream red bean bingsu (shaved ice) for 18,000 won and the tteora carrot cake for 8,000 won, piling the ice onto crunchy brown rice nurungji chips and tasting a rice cake steamed to order for a soft, pillowy bite. For dessert and a water garden away from the tourist crowds, Sigan-eul Damda Gujwa is a good choice.

Traveling around Jeju's east side, you'll notice Sehwa and Pyeongdae-ri are packed with pretty cafés. And honestly, with so many good-looking options, it's hard to pick just one.
On this trip I was looking for somewhere to try a slightly unusual dessert while also getting some quiet, and that's how I ended up at Sigan-eul Damda, a café in Sehwa, Jeju. It sits a bit further inside Pyeongdae-ri and Sehwa-ri, away from the busy tourist strip, so it was a great spot to slow down. The nurungji-cream milk bingsu and the carrot tteora cake, made with Gujwa's famous carrots, really stood out.

A quiet café in the back lanes of Pyeongdae-ri and Sehwa-ri
While exploring Sehwa Beach and Pyeongdae-ri on my east-Jeju trip, I stopped by Sigan-eul Damda for a break. Since it's set a little back from the crowded main tourist spots, it turned out to be a great Gujwa, Jeju café for anyone who wants a calm place to sit.

Visiting famous hotspots is fun, but when it's too crowded it's hard to take photos or relax with your coffee. That's when finding a more laid-back café for a mid-trip break really pays off.
The water garden and interior at Sigan-eul Damda Gujwa
What won me over instantly was the reflection pool garden at the entrance. On a clear day, listening to the sound of running water melted away some of the travel fatigue :)
Inside, calm music was playing, making it a comfortable spot to chat and take your time.

With natural light pouring in, the white-toned interior paired with the purple of wisteria made everything feel bright and cheerful!

If you're looking for a quiet spot in Jeju to take pretty photos and unwind, this place is worth a visit :)

The café also sells diffusers, and aroma scents drift through the space, adding to the relaxing mood.
There's more seating further inside too — if you like something more private, that section works well.
Floating a wish boat on the water garden

Celebrities have visited and left autographs here, and at the reflection pool you can write a wish on a tiny paper boat and float it out — a fun little experience. It was nice that a Jeju café visit could offer more than just sitting down for dessert.
If you want to make a special memory on your trip, try writing a wish of your own :) It also makes for a pretty photo to keep as a Jeju travel record.

Looking at the menu, I couldn't decide what to get, but since it was hot out, the bingsu and the tteora cake caught my eye, so I ordered both!
What we ordered at Sigan-eul Damda Gujwa

We ordered the nurungji-cream red bean bingsu (shaved ice) for ₩18,000 and the tteora carrot cake for ₩8,000.
Nurungji-cream red bean bingsu, 18,000 won

The bingsu (shaved ice) was one of the menu items I was most looking forward to at Sigan-eul Damda. I've got an old-lady palate that loves injeolmi (bean-flour rice cake) and red bean, so I went with the nurungji-cream red bean bingsu.

When it arrived, the plating had such a distinctly Korean look — so pretty! Red beans and nutty nurungji (scorched rice) cream piled high over milk ice, clearly different from your typical milk bingsu.

It came with brown rice nurungji chips and injeolmi rice cake on the side, and the idea was to scoop bingsu onto the chips and eat it in one crunchy bite — an unusual method, but a charming one.
Plenty of injeolmi (soybean-dusted rice cake) on top
There was a generous amount of injeolmi to eat alongside the bingsu, so the soft milk ice paired with the nutty, chewy rice cake made for a great combination. Between the red bean, nurungji cream, brown rice nurungji chips, and injeolmi, there were so many textures in one bowl — it was genuinely fun to eat :)
The outside was piled with fluffy, cotton-candy-like nurungji cream, and the inside had melt-in-your-mouth milk ice, which made for a really interesting texture. The milk ice itself was clean and smooth, and with the toasty, nutty flavor of the nurungji cream added in, the overall flavor was richer than I expected. The sweetness of the red bean and the nuttiness of the nurungji blended together into something I kept going back for.

Piling a generous scoop of bingsu onto the brown rice nurungji chips and biting down — crunch! crackle! — added a texture that made it far tastier than eating the bingsu alone. If you like nutty nurungji and milk bingsu, this one will hit exactly your taste :)
Tteora carrot cake, 8,000 won

Sigan-eul Damda's signature tteora carrot cake is genuinely something I'd recommend to anyone visiting this café. It's a special dessert made with carrots that Gujwa is famous for, and it felt fitting to try it during a Jeju trip.
A dessert made with Gujwa carrots from Jeju

Jeju is famous for its carrots too, and there was something extra special about tasting a dessert made with carrots grown specifically in the Gujwa area during a Jeju trip. I also liked that instead of a typical flour-based cake, this used a soft rice cake base with carrot flavor added. And on top of that, one dessert alone was surprisingly filling, so it worked well as a light snack too.

And that tiny carrot decoration on top! It was made so cutely I almost felt bad eating it :) It made a great accent for photos too, so it was a good pick for capturing a special dessert from the Jeju trip. The carrot tteora cake is a limited-run item, so if you're after a distinctive Gujwa, Jeju dessert, it's worth trying at least once.
Steamed rice cake with carrot jam

At first glance it looks like baeksulgi (plain steamed rice cake), but since it's steamed fresh right after ordering, the rice cake was chewy like tteok yet also had cream mixed in, making it much softer and fluffier than a regular rice cake. It had just the right density to eat with a spoon, almost like eating a slice of cake, and the whipped cream added on top made the whole texture even softer.
The real highlight was the sweet carrot jam tucked inside! The soft, mild rice cake paired with the gentle sweetness and freshness of the carrot jam blended together beautifully in the mouth.
A slow hour at a Sehwa-ri café in Jeju

Just as its name suggests — Sigan-eul Damda means 'holding time' — the time I spent here felt special. When you're rushing between famous sights on a Jeju trip, at some point both body and mind get tired. That's when sitting down at a café with good dessert and drinks to slow down really matters.

Listening to the water in the reflection pool, taking photos in the naturally lit space — it felt like more than just a pretty café, like a place that gives you an actual memory from your Jeju trip :)
Final verdict on Sigan-eul Damda Gujwa
This Jeju Sehwa café, Sigan-eul Damda, was a great find for a quiet break paired with a special dessert. The nurungji-cream milk bingsu especially — something I hadn't easily seen elsewhere — combined smooth milk ice, nutty nurungji cream, and crunchy brown rice nurungji chips into something genuinely fun to eat.
But what stuck with me most was the carrot tteora cake. The soft, fluffy rice-based cake paired with whipped cream and the tangy-sweet carrot jam was delicious without feeling heavy. If you're traveling Jeju's east side and looking for a quiet café around Sehwa or Pyeongdae-ri, come to Sigan-eul Damda and slowly hold onto a special piece of your trip with these desserts :)
