Seonleung eel restaurant after work: whole sauce-grilled eel, Manmok
In short
Manmok (만목) is a Kanto-style grilled eel restaurant on Seonleung-ro 82-gil near Seonleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul, where a chef who trained in a Michelin 3-star kitchen in Japan grills Gochang freshwater eel. On an after-work visit to Manmok, the order was a whole sauce-grilled eel and a half salt-grilled eel with Ebisu draft beer, plus complimentary chawanmushi (savory egg custard), side dishes of pickled wild garlic leaves and acorn jelly salad, and black tea and matcha ice cream for dessert. Verdict: free corkage and eel grilled in the kitchen, so no charcoal smell on your clothes, are Manmok's biggest strengths.

Every time the seasons change I go looking for stamina food, and I'd heard about a famous eel restaurant near Seonleung — so I went to check it out. This is my review of Manmok, a Kanto-style eel restaurant run by a chef formerly of a Japan Michelin 3-star kitchen. Let's get into it right away.
The vibe at Manmok in Seonleung: works solo or for a date
The interior at Manmok is calm and understated overall, and the space is clean and upscale — perfect for a date or a gathering, I thought.

The table setup is arranged so eating alone doesn't feel awkward at all, so it'd work well as a solo lunch spot for office workers around Seonleung too.

Under the table they've got cups, wet wipes, tissues — all the little tableware essentials right there, so you could grab whatever you needed instantly. That kind of thoughtful detail, that sense, is the best...!

Evening order and free corkage at Manmok
At Manmok, lunch is great for office workers refueling with a hearty, delicious eel rice bowl, and dinner is a menu lineup perfect for grilled eel with that crisp-outside-tender-inside texture, or a warm nabe hot pot, alongside a drink. I visited after work, so I ordered a whole portion of the sauce-grilled eel and a half portion of the salt-grilled eel! (And there's this amazing tip — corkage is free~)

It's an open kitchen, so you can watch the cooking happen, which was fun to watch. Since the eel is grilled entirely in the kitchen, no charcoal smell gets into your clothes, so you can wear a nice outfit on a date and enjoy it worry-free haha.

Side dishes, chawanmushi, and pairing sauces
After ordering, they set out neat side dishes that pair perfectly with eel. I always thought myeongi-namul (mountain garlic leaves) was made for samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly), but... the combination of eel and myeongi-namul is genuinely so delicious...!

The muk-muchim (seasoned acorn jelly salad) was also delicious, full of nutty sesame oil and loaded with perilla leaves.

Before the eel came out, they served chawanmushi to gently soothe the stomach first, and it was just right for building up an appetite.

Salt, wasabi, shiitake wasabi, sancho pickle — any combination pairs perfectly with the eel, and they serve them on such a pretty plate.
Gochang freshwater eel, salt-grilled: pure clean flavor
The eel I'd been waiting for finally arrived!!! Since they select only Gochang freshwater eel, considered the best domestic source, there was almost no fishy smell, and the flesh was thick — the texture was just insane.

Pretty from the front, pretty from the side too haha.
First, the salt-grilled version! The salt-grilled eel is pure clean flavor itself. See how thick it is?

It's delicious even without any special seasoning, but paired with the sancho pickle, wasabi, ginger and other sauces served alongside, the flavor really soaked in and I ate it without pausing for breath haha.

One bite of the eel and it was so good I couldn't not order beer — pairing it with a cold Ebisu draft nearly knocked me out.

Kanto-style sauce-grilled eel and Koshihikari rice
The sauce-grilled eel, cooked Kanto-style — grilled once, steamed, then brushed with a secret sauce and grilled twice more over charcoal — kept its texture and clean flavor intact, with the distinctive sauce soaked all the way through. Laid over Koshihikari rice, it was genuinely so delicious.

One bowl of rice... no, two bowls, gone in a flash. The eel wasn't greasy at all and felt clean, so I had no heavy feeling even after the meal — so great!
Dessert and a detail in the restroom
After the meal, dessert was black tea and matcha ice cream to finish the palate off cleanly! Even the dessert was perfect at Manmok haha.
And... one more thing that impressed me right to the end — the restroom detail. So many brands of hand wash and hand cream, plus post-meal gargle, all set out so you could pick your favorite scent and finish on a good note. Seriously, how far does the owner's sense of style go... Manmok was a pleasure from start to finish....♡
Honestly, the whole time I was eating, I kept thinking I need to bring my parents here next time. Whether it's a meal with precious family, a cozy date, or a satisfying solo lunch — if you're looking for a place to properly nourish yourself this changing season, I confidently recommend Manmok near Seonleung.
