Sokcho Central Market bakery: Yeongnang Lake walk snack, Bultan

In short

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread (속초불탄감자빵) is a bakery in Sokcho, Gangwon, that sells potato bread made by roasting Gangwon potatoes. The writer came across the Bultan shop by chance in Sokcho Central Market, tried a sample and bought a box of potato bread plus Sokcho squid jjondeugi (chewy dried squid snack); the bread was fluffy and not salty, and the jjondeugi, which wasn't fishy, went with iced coffee all along the Yeongnang Lake walk. Verdict: Bultan potato bread makes a great Gangwon trip gift, and squid jjondeugi is an easy snack to carry.

When you travel in Gangwon, there's one thing you have to eat, right? Potatoes!!! I'm a huge potato lover myself 🥔 haha. On this Gangneung, Yangyang and Sokcho trip I went hunting for foods that feel truly Gangwon, and this post is about the potato bread I ate while food shopping at Sokcho Market ~~~

How is Bultan potato bread made?

I heard Bultan (불탄) potato bread is made every morning by washing and baking Gangwon potatoes in-house! 🥔♡ They bake them instead of boiling or steaming to keep the potato's natural sweet, nutty flavor. Such dedication, right?

On top of that, the outer shell is made with domestic grains like black sesame, black beans and black rice, with no synthetic additives, so the potato bread I enjoyed felt even more special, hehe.

Finding Bultan potato bread by chance in Sokcho Central Market

I spotted the Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread shop while shopping in Sokcho Central Market, and I was so happy to see it! It was the squid ink potato bread, "burnt potato bread" (불탄감자빵). Isn't the name adorable already? haha

I also bought Sokcho squid jjondeugi there. Both made satisfying Sokcho souvenir snacks, so I'll introduce them here.

When you search for quirky Sokcho cafés or Sokcho bakeries, Gangwon potato bread comes up a lot. I understand Bultan has several branches, and I've heard there's a big bakery café near Seoraksan. The main store is probably great too, but this time I happened to meet it in Sokcho Central Market.

Burnt potato bread! The name alone is sooo much fun haha. The shop sign had a cute black potato character, and the yellow packaging boxes were covered in colorful characters too! Not just potato bread but burnt potato bread — it felt like a truly Sokcho-style quirky dessert.

I fell for the friendly staff who cut me a sample saying "here, try one!", and then fell again for the nutty potato taste ♡

How did the Bultan potato bread taste?

The outside of the potato bread was soft and the inside was full of fluffy potato. I'd actually wanted to try Bultan potato bread for a while, so the moment I found the shop I happily started browsing.

Then a staff member with such a kind face cut a piece for me to taste. Oooh, thank you ♡ One bite: soft outside, packed with fluffy potato inside!

The one-box packaging is cute and neat too.

It keeps that plain, nutty potato flavor and isn't salty, which I liked. It's not a heavily seasoned taste; it's a style that lets you enjoy the potato itself. The inside is especially soft, so it didn't feel dry or stick in my throat. If you love potatoes like me, it's worth trying once while hunting for Sokcho desserts.

A box of Bultan potato bread as a Gangwon trip gift

I liked the potato bread so much after the sample that I bought one box to bring to my family in Seoul.

How much is Bultan potato bread delivery?

The shop's delivery notice showed that you can order Bultan potato bread by courier too. These were the prices posted when I visited:

  • 3 boxes ₩34,000 (shipping included)
  • 5 boxes ₩50,000 (free shipping)
  • 10 boxes ₩100,000 (free shipping)

In-store prices and delivery sets may differ, so please keep that in mind. It comes in a cute yellow box, so it's nice to carry home as a Sokcho gift. Regular cookies or chocolate are fine, but potato bread screams "I went to Gangwon!", which made me like it even more.

For anyone looking for a Sokcho bakery or dessert spot, especially if you're stuck on a gift for parents or family, it seems like a decent choice.

Is Sokcho squid jjondeugi fishy or salty?

It's squid, so I expected it to smell fishy or taste salty, but the smell wasn't overwhelming and it wasn't very salty. It's weirdly addictive, haha.

I only meant to buy the potato bread, but a cute squid drawing next to it grabbed my eyes again! It was Sokcho squid-flavored jjondeugi. The squid character on the packaging was so cute I couldn't just walk past.

I came to Sokcho for food shopping, so I had to try this too! haha So I got both the potato bread and the squid jjondeugi. And this jjondeugi turned out way better than I expected.

Iced coffee and jjondeugi on the Yeongnang Lake walk

Sokcho squid jjondeugi is fun to chew, the kind of snack where you open one and then open another! I carried it in my bag through the whole Sokcho trip and nibbled away. It goes surprisingly well with an iced Americano too, haha.

I munched on it while walking around Yeongnang Lake, so it's perfect as a travel snack! I even pulled one out in the evening while writing this post. I don't get sick of it haha.

Looking at the lake in the cool autumn breeze, iced coffee in one hand and jjondeugi in the other! Ahhh, I love little joys like this ♡

Each piece is individually wrapped, so it's easy to slip into a bag. It's good to eat one at a time in the car, and fine for a quick sugar boost on a walk. While traveling around looking for things to do in Sokcho, it was a satisfying snack to enjoy with no fuss. I think it'd also be easy to buy several as casual Sokcho gifts.

Sokcho Central Market food shopping: potato bread and jjondeugi recommended

For food shopping at Sokcho Central Market, I recommend Bultan potato bread and jjondeugi! The jjondeugi isn't expensive and has cute packaging, so it's nice to give as a gift after traveling around.

On this Sokcho Central Market trip I bought salted seafood (jeotgal), potato bread, and squid jjondeugi too. Discovering tasty things one by one while browsing the market was really fun. If you're searching for Sokcho or Sokcho-Yangyang cafés and stop by Sokcho Central Market during your trip, give this kind of quirky food shopping a try.

Eating a hearty meal at local Sokcho restaurants is great, but snacks that capture a region's character are another joy of tasting your way through a trip. The Bultan potato bread I tried had a soft, plain potato flavor I liked, and the squid jjondeugi charmed me with its mild taste and chewy texture.

Tonight I'm going to warm up the one potato bread I have left in the air fryer as a late-night snack, haha. And if you're after a light, fun Sokcho souvenir, grab some Sokcho jjondeugi too.

I think I'll crave these again on my next Sokcho trip. Sokcho Central Market food shopping, and among the snack breads, the quirky Bultan potato bread and the various jjondeugi: totally satisfied! ♡♡♡
