In short

Appa Jjim Hanam Main Branch is a Korean restaurant specializing in braised pollock (kodari jorim) in Hanam, Gyeonggi, an 8-minute walk from Exit 1 of Pungsan Station. I took this photo in a hurry, but since it was a weekend lunch, lots of families had come. Seeing them spend the end of the week together so cozily was lovely.

We ordered siraegi braised pollock + seafood pancake + pot rice.

Side dishes and cold cucumber soup

The sides were geotjeori (fresh kimchi), stir-fried mushrooms, seaweed, salad and more. Rather than just filling the table, they were sides that went well with the spicy sauce of the pollock.

And there was refreshing cold cucumber soup too! I used to really hate cucumber soup, but now I like it, hehe.

Small siraegi braised pollock for ₩35,000: how did it taste?

The small siraegi braised pollock at Appa Jjim Hanam Main Branch is ₩35,000, a combination of nutty siraegi (dried radish greens) and pollock. The tofu wasn't bite-sized but as big as a fist, and the radish came in big chunks too.

You can adjust the spice level, so we ordered it moderately spicy. The sauce coated everything evenly, and sesame seeds sprinkled on top made it look even tastier.

When I put the pollock, siraegi and tofu on my small plate, it looked really appetizing.

I wrapped it in the seaweed that came as a side, and wow, haha. I definitely recommend it for a family meal out.

Scented pot rice for ₩2,500 with the pollock

The scented pot rice (hyangmi solbap) at Appa Jjim Hanam Main Branch is ₩2,500. Braised pollock without pot rice would be a shame~! We ordered two, and they came together in one pot.

Ta-da! Everyone knows it's better than plain rice.

After scooping out the rice, they poured water into the pot.

Now for the pollock itself. The flesh is quite plump and comes nicely deboned, so you just put it straight on your rice. Rice plus spicy pollock is a great combination.

Crispy seafood pancake for ₩16,000: worth ordering?

The crispy seafood pancake (hae-mul-jeon) at Appa Jjim Hanam Main Branch is ₩16,000, and we ordered it because we didn't want to stop at just pollock. The pancake is really, really thick, and it came cut into easy-to-eat pieces.

With seafood in the name, it was generously packed with squid and all kinds of vegetables, so it lived up to its name.

The crunch was the real deal too, so you can't help thinking, "This was definitely just made!" A seriously delicious pancake.

Dip it in the soy sauce they gave us for the seaweed, and you realize pollock and pancake go pretty well together.

Finishing with sungnyung

Finishing with sungnyung (scorched-rice tea) from the pot rice cleanses your palate completely.

It was a nutty sungnyung, and I enjoyed it.
