Gangneung dessert café at 9:30am opening: strawberry and coffee sand

When you're traveling, you're always agonizing over what to bring back as a gift for family or friends — and that was true in Gangneung too.

I remembered Gangneung Sand Main Branch from my last Gangneung trip, so I decided to stop by again this time.

How to find Gangneung Sand Main Branch and where to park

Gangneung Sand Main Branch sits at 31 Seonggokgoyang-gil 5beon-angil, Gangneung — a white building you reach by heading inward from the main road into the village. Driving there was convenient, and the parking lot was spacious, so parking was easy.

Following the Gangneung Sand signs from the road into the village, right about when you start wondering 'is there really a café out here?', the white building with the Gangneung Sand sign comes into view and you find it quickly. The whole building at Gangneung Sand Main Branch is white, so it stands out.

The Gangneung Sand counter is on the 2nd floor, so you take the elevator or the stairs up.

There's a sign for bangpaje-ppang (breakwater bread) at the entrance. The bread is shaped like a sea breakwater, which looked pretty unusual.

The space in front of the 1st-floor elevator reminded me of Santorini, Greece.

Getting off the elevator on the 2nd floor, you can see stairs leading up to the 3rd floor, and looking down, there's an exhibition space visible outside on the 1st floor. I didn't go in, though. Gangneung Sand is a large café with a lot to look around.

The second-floor café and how to order

The 2nd floor of Gangneung Sand Main Branch has the counter and café space. You can order at the kiosk, but there's staff too, so you can order directly with them.

Next to the 2nd-floor counter there's a display corner showing off Gangneung Sand as well as Gangneung breakwater bread. I'd tried both before — they tasted good and the boxed packaging looked neat, so I remembered it as a really solid Gangneung travel gift and decided to come back.

The coffee and drink menu isn't huge, but the prices are nice, so that's a plus.

Gangneung Sand flavors and box prices

Gangneung Sand is a dessert with sweet cream sandwiched between soft cookies. For a box of 10, coffee flavor is ₩16,000 and other flavors are ₩17,000.

Flavors include coffee, dried persimmon, strawberry, black sesame, Chodang corn, sweet potato, and more, all ready to choose from.

It's fun picking based on your taste, and if you're gifting to multiple people, the coffee flavor — the safest, most crowd-pleasing option — seems like a good call. Isn't Gangneung basically synonymous with coffee? The coffee flavor has a subtle, spreading coffee aroma and isn't too sweet, so I thought it'd work well as a gift for older relatives too. The strawberry flavor keeps its fresh tartness, which felt like it would hit the spot for kids or women. The Chodang corn flavor especially caught my eye for having that distinct Gangneung local character.

I ended up buying 2 boxes — strawberry and coffee flavors.

Worth noting: leaving a Naver receipt review gets you a free canned Americano.

Gangneung Sand isn't just a shop where you buy sand cookies and leave — it's designed so you can enjoy the feeling of being in Gangneung a bit longer, so there was fun just in looking around. Since I came right at opening time, we ended up being the first customers. The interior was so pretty I took a few photos before leaving.

What's in the third-floor sandbox play zone

The 3rd floor of Gangneung Sand Main Branch is a sandbox play zone. I did a quick walk-through.

This would be a great spot to bring kids to. I think boys especially would love it.

Before you buy: no single pieces, no mixed boxes, how long it keeps

Gangneung Sand notes that single-piece sales and mixed-flavor packaging aren't available, so deciding on your flavors before you visit will make buying faster and easier.

Each piece is individually wrapped in a one-bite size, which is great for sharing and easy to carry while traveling.

It keeps for 14 days at room temperature and 30 days refrigerated, which is handy if you can't hand the gift over right after your trip. When picking a Gangneung travel gift, taste matters, but so does the packaging, storage, and how easy it is to share — and on that front, Gangneung Sand was a great choice for carrying home the feeling of the trip.

It's also nice to pull out with coffee or tea once you're back home, and easy to give without feeling like too much — which is why I keep coming back to it as a Gangneung souvenir snack.

I'd recommend Gangneung Sand to anyone looking for a sweet Gangneung dessert gift that pairs well with coffee. If I come back to Gangneung, sure, seeing the ocean is great, but definitely grab a Gangneung souvenir snack to share with the people you care about too. I was happy with what I picked up this trip, and I'll probably stop by again next time I'm in Gangneung.
