Myeongdong barbecue with staff-grilled pork: Yuktongnyeong

In short

Yuktongnyeong Myeongdong Main Branch (육통령 명동본점) is a barbecue restaurant near Exit 5 of Myeongdong Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. I visited for a date and ordered pork belly and omija-aged ribs; the staff grilled the meat, making conversation easy, and I was satisfied enough to want to return despite the distance from home.

I went to Yuktongnyeong Myeongdong Main Branch (육통령 명동본점) for pork belly during a date in Myeongdong. We chose Gwanggaeto pork belly and omija-aged ribs, and because a staff member grilled the meat for us, we could focus less on the cooking and more on our conversation.

Where is Yuktongnyeong Myeongdong Main Branch?

The address is 37-2 Myeongdong 8na-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul, South Korea (서울 중구 명동8나길 37-2). I walked there from Exit 5 of Myeongdong Station on Subway Line 4, and it was easy to reach by public transportation.

Inside the restaurant, I could also see Blue Ribbons, Red Ribbons, and autographs from well-known people.

What meat did I order, and how much did it cost?

I ordered Gwanggaeto pork belly and 15-day omija-aged Gwanggaeto handmade ribs. They cost ₩16,000 and ₩18,000, respectively.

What were the basic sides served with the meat like?

The green onion salad was especially tasty among the basic sides. Six sauces and seasonings were also served, so I could pair them with the meat. The pork belly itself was delicious, so I ate it without dipping it in sauce.

The small plates were hexagonal to match the hexagonal pig logo. I noticed details like this small design touch.

How was the staff-grilled meat for a date meal?

The pork belly had a glossy sheen when it arrived, and the ribs also looked to be in good condition.

During my visit, a staff member grilled the meat for us. Since I did not have to worry about cooking it, it was easy to talk with my partner.

The pork belly was delicious even without sauce. I do not know exactly how it was aged, but the flavor of the meat stayed with me. Myeongdong is fairly far from home, yet I would like to come back for the pork belly.

After the pork belly, I tasted the ribs with high expectations and was satisfied. The seasoning was tasty, and the meat was tender.

Was the kimchi stew and rice worth trying too?

The kimchi stew tasted as if it had been made with sour, well-fermented kimchi. It contained plenty of tofu and meat, so I enjoyed the stew as well as the meat.

The rice was said to be Paju Hyangmi, and perhaps because of that, it felt soft. I was satisfied with the meal of meat, kimchi stew, and rice.
