Weekend lunch at a Seocho buckwheat noodle restaurant: Seonbawi

In short

Seonbawi Memil Jangteo Yangjae Branch is a buckwheat noodle and chicken restaurant in a standalone building near Yangjae Citizens' Forest in Seocho, Seoul. Two servings of perilla oil makguksu (buckwheat noodles, 12,000 won each) and pollack sashimi suyuk at 23,000 won arrived with icy dongchimi broth and baek-kimchi, and the 100% buckwheat noodles snapped cleanly against the nutty perilla oil. With dedicated parking out front and a 50-seat group room on the second floor, Seonbawi Memil Jangteo works just as well for a weekend date as for a family meal.

The first floor is already spacious, but a sign on the second floor caught my eye announcing 50-seat group reservations and room rentals available! 📢 With this kind of scale, I thought it'd handle family gatherings or group meetups without a hitch. The restaurant was already buzzing with guests there to enjoy the delicious noodles! 👥

The table: perilla oil makguksu for two and pollack sashimi suyuk

What we ordered was two servings of perilla oil makguksu at ₩12,000 each and pollack sashimi suyuk at ₩23,000. When it finally arrived at the table, the nutty scent of perilla oil and the sweet-spicy aroma of pollack sashimi spread gently, stimulating all the senses. Thanks to the neat yet generous presentation, it was a perfectly satisfying table for both eyes and mouth. 🩷

Baek-kimchi served as a basic side dish

Baek-kimchi and the icy dongchimi broth

The crisp, refreshing baek-kimchi (white napa kimchi) that came as a basic side dish paired beautifully with the main dishes! 🥬 It was fermented just right, and each bite washed the palate clean with a refreshing crunch.

Bowl of dongchimi broth with floating ice flakes

The dongchimi (watery radish kimchi) broth served alongside came in a deep bowl with ice flakes floating on top — it looked cooling just to see it! ❄️ The tangy yet deep savory flavor unique to dongchimi felt like it completely opened up my system.

How does the perilla oil makguksu taste?

At the bottom of the perilla oil makguksu bowl, golden perilla oil pooled generously, and the more I mixed it, the more the nutty flavor exploded! 💛 Taking a big bite, the noodles broke off with a satisfying snap while the nutty perilla oil coated my mouth moist and full.

Thanks to the clean, subtle charm of buckwheat without any harsh flavors, this was easily the best lunch option in Yangjae-dong. 🍜

What comes with the pollack sashimi suyuk?

The pollack sashimi suyuk (boiled pollack with sashimi salad), a perfect match with makguksu, was sliced thin and easy to eat, looking wonderfully chewy. Eating it together with the springy, sweet-and-spicy seasoned pollack sashimi mixed on top cut right through any greasiness. 🌶️

A piece of boiled pollack topped with pollack sashimi salad

I picked up a thick piece of the boiled pollack with my chopsticks, piled it high, and sent it straight into my mouth! 🥢 The nutty flavor that spread the moment I bit down, along with the juicy, moist texture of the meat, was incredible.

The tender boiled pollack and the chewy pollack sashimi danced together in my mouth, practically melting away before I could even chew properly! 😭

Is Seonbawi Memil Jangteo worth a weekend lunch?

The combination of the carefully made perilla oil makguksu, pulled from 100% pure buckwheat, and the soft pollack sashimi suyuk was, I can confidently say, the best! 💖 If you're looking for a can't-fail restaurant near Yangjae for a weekend date or family gathering, definitely give this place a try.

I'm planning to bring my parents back next weekend to enjoy some cool makguksu again. 🏃‍♀️💨
