Early dinner makguksu and pollack bossam in Seocho, Seoul: Seonbawi
In short
Seonbawi Memil Jangteo Yangjae Branch is a 100% buckwheat makguksu (cold buckwheat noodle) restaurant near Yangjae Citizens' Forest Station in Seocho, Seoul, the Yangjae-dong branch of the well-known Seonbawi original in Gwacheon. The place I'm introducing today is Memil Jangteo (메밀장터), located near Yangjae Citizens' Forest. Memil Jangteo, already a long-famous restaurant near Seonbawi Station in Gwacheon, has opened a branch in Yangjae-dong too...?!!! I couldn't not go, so my partner and I zipped over there quickly.

Where is Seonbawi Memil Jangteo Yangjae Branch, and is there parking?
Boasting 100% buckwheat content, this Yangjae Citizens' Forest Station buckwheat restaurant! We drove there in the evening, and it's located in a spot where you'd think, 'is there really a restaurant here?' haha. The location may be awkward, but a good restaurant doesn't care about location!
If the Seonbawi branch is full of old-restaurant charm, the Yangjae Citizens' Forest branch felt cozy but clean! And parking — right in front of the store!!! Great!!!

A CatchTable waitlist even in the early evening
There was a CatchTable tablet installed at the entrance. I'd imagine at lunchtime office workers line up here.
+ We came a bit early for dinner, but by the time we finished eating there was already a waitlist forming.

The three dishes two people ordered at Seonbawi Memil Jangteo
Like always at the Seonbawi branch haha, we ordered: pollack sashimi makguksu (명태회막국수), dongchimi makguksu (동치미막국수), and pollack sashimi suyuk (명태회수육) — three dishes! It might honestly be a bit much for two people, but we couldn't give up any of them...
+ The perilla oil makguksu is also a real treat. But since it was hot out, we went with the cool dongchimi instead!

+ The ssam chicken dishes always make me curious... I'd like to try one sometime after hiking Gwanaksan.

Pollack sashimi makguksu, 13,000 won — a little spicy for the spice-shy
Pollack sashimi makguksu ₩13,000. This is what my partner ordered. It might taste a bit spicy for those who can't handle spice. But it's the kind of spicy that you can't put your chopsticks down over! My partner is actually terrible with spicy food haha, and was practically in tears but finished it to the end. After eating about half, adding the dongchimi broth they give you makes it even more delicious :-)

They also give you dongchimi broth and house-made watery kimchi, which pair perfectly with the noodles.

Dongchimi makguksu, 11,000 won — good without vinegar or mustard
Dongchimi makguksu ₩11,000. This is what I ordered! So, so good! Not too tangy, not too bland — just the right dongchimi flavor. The kind of taste you'd want to carry around in a tumbler on a hot summer day haha. Vinegar and mustard are set out beside the table so you can add them to taste. But it was already delicious without anything, so I passed haha.

Pollack sashimi bossam, 23,000 won — the side dish that steals the meal
Pollack sashimi bossam ₩23,000. Bossam (boiled pork wraps) is always right haha! If you order it just expecting a side dish, you'll be surprised haha. The tender pork paired with spicy pollack sashimi salad and dried radish strips is a fantastic combination. They were generous with the portions of dried radish and pollack sashimi salad too, which was really nice haha.

They also run a review event, but we skipped it!

50 seats upstairs: does Seonbawi Memil Jangteo work for group dinners?
The first floor didn't seem that big, but there were as many as 50 seats on the second floor. I thought it would be really nice for group dinners. (On the day I visited, there was already a work dinner happening on the first floor, so I couldn't get photos of the interior, sob.)

After a satisfying meal, we finished with warm buckwheat tea! Fittingly for a buckwheat restaurant, a nice touch to cleanse the palate at the end.

Is Seonbawi Memil Jangteo Yangjae Branch worth a return visit?
Memil Jangteo, a restaurant near Yangjae Citizens' Forest made with 100% buckwheat, impressed me with its noodles carrying a rich, nutty buckwheat aroma paired with deep broth. The perilla oil makguksu spreads a savory flavor throughout your mouth, clean and enjoyable, and the suyuk we ordered alongside was neat and satisfying too. The restaurant is spacious and comfortable, making it a great spot for family gatherings or a tidy meal. If you want clean, easy-on-the-stomach buckwheat dishes in Yangjae, this is a restaurant I'd recommend without hesitation.
