The weather's gotten noticeably cooler lately, which makes for great walking weather. Feels like the season for strolling the Yeonnam-dong alleys is slowly arriving. While chatting with a friend on a walk, I suddenly craved sizzling teppanyaki and headed off.
Actually, I'd tried monjayaki at another restaurant recently and was a bit let down, so I wanted to find a place that does it properly. Luckily there was a spot nearby I'd had my eye on, so I went with a happy, excited heart.
How to get to Jojo Yeonnam Branch, and where to park
Jojo Yeonnam Branch sits right in the main strip of the Yeonnam-dong restaurant street, packed with good eateries, so it's easy to find even on a first visit. I'd most recommend getting off at Hongik University Station and walking over slowly while browsing the cute alleyways.
If you're driving, since it's Yeonnam-dong, I'd recommend using the nearby public parking lot.
Inside Jojo Yeonnam Branch: the window bar seats
Open the door and step inside Jojo Yeonnam Branch, and the lively, delicious smell unique to teppanyaki restaurants hits your nose right away. Inside, there's a long bar along the kitchen where you can watch the cooking process directly.
We wanted to enjoy a peaceful weekday lunch looking out at the view, so we took seats side by side at the window bar. Of course, there are also plenty of regular tables great for sitting face-to-face and having a cozy chat with your company, so seat yourself according to your preference.
Even though we visited right at weekday lunchtime, there were already quite a few guests enjoying their meals. Luckily there wasn't a line or any waiting, so we got seated right away — but dinner or weekends might get packed, so you may want to check ahead!
Jojo Yeonnam Branch menu: what the monjayaki set for two costs
Sitting down and looking through the clean menu at Jojo Yeonnam Branch, there was a mouthwatering variety of teppan dishes ready to go, from okonomiyaki to monjayaki. We debated ordering separate à la carte items each, but the lineup was so varied that we naturally decided on a set menu instead!
You get to try several dishes at once and the price is quite reasonable, so the value is excellent. After some happy deliberation, we ordered the monjayaki set for two, which comes with mentaiko monjayaki, spicy yakisoba, and volcano potato, all included!

Ordering at Jojo Yeonnam Branch has a really cute touch — this is like a point card(?) where you write your name, and they turn your nickname into a little toothpick flag that gets stuck into the monjayaki batter when it comes out.

Volcano potato, a dish only Jojo serves
The volcano potato, which they say you can only get at Jojo Yeonnam Branch, looks amazing — soft potato salad topped prettily with a gorgeous poached egg. Crispy flakes surround it generously, so scooping it up with a spoon gives you a really varied texture.
Popping the savory poached egg and mixing it with the potato, then topping it with the flakes, made it the perfect side that adds softness to the salty main dish!
Mentaiko monjayaki: scraping the griddle with a mini spatula
The mentaiko monjayaki at Jojo Yeonnam Branch makes your mouth water just from the look of it.
The staff cook it all for you, so you just wait and eat comfortably. It was packed with salty, pop-in-your-mouth mentaiko (marinated pollock roe) that exploded with umami, and the sweet, crunchy cabbage rounded out the texture perfectly.
But most of all, the fun of scraping the lightly browned, crispy batter off the griddle with the tiny dedicated spatula was such a treat. It was much nuttier and richer in flavor than what I'd had elsewhere recently, so my friend and I marveled and scraped the plate clean haha.
The cheese is savory and the mochi is chewy — a combination that couldn't possibly taste bad, ugh
How was the karai (spicy) yakisoba at Jojo Yeonnam Branch?
Next up, the spicy yakisoba lived up to its name with a pleasantly spicy sauce that really perked up the appetite — a great kick. Plump shrimp, savory meat, and fresh cabbage mingled generously with the noodles, so every bite was full and satisfying.
Eating monjayaki alone for too long can get a little heavy, but this spicy stir-fried noodle dish balanced it out perfectly, so the pairing was excellent.
We were completely stuffed, but everything was so delicious that we couldn't put our chopsticks down and ended up finishing it all — a Yeonnam-dong favorite 🧡🤍
