Hongdae restaurant weekend wait, warmed-plate steak: Hôtel de Couture
In short
Hôtel de Couture is a Western restaurant on the 1.5th floor of a Yeonnam-dong alley in Mapo, Seoul, 567 meters from Exit 3 of Hongik University Station. Walking past on a weekend and seeing a line outside, the writer joined it and ordered carrot duck aglio olio, house steak and cider, and the steak stayed hot because Hôtel de Couture serves it on a warmed plate. The carrot duck aglio olio, topped with carrot rapée and sliced duck, was the most memorable dish of the day.

Looking for pasta in Yeonnam-dong and finding a line at Hôtel de Couture
I went out to Yeonnam-dong on the weekend craving pasta after a while and started looking around. There are so many restaurants in Yeonnam-dong that I was struggling to pick one, when I passed by a spot with people lined up outside. That was Hôtel de Couture.
Seeing a wait outside made me curious about the place, and since I happened to be in the mood for Western food that day, I decided to wait it out and go in.

It's the kind of place you can stumble on while wandering the Yeonnam-dong backstreets, so it's an easy detour if you're already out around Hongdae for a meal. On weekends there can be a wait like I had, so it might be worth showing up with a bit of extra time.

What the 1.5th-floor dining room feels like

The restaurant sits up a flight of stairs, and walking in after climbing them felt like a completely different vibe from what I saw outside.

The interior overall felt warm and calm.

Rather than flashy decor, it had a soft, comfortable feel that made it easy to focus on the meal.

So it felt like a good fit for a casual meal with friends, but also for a date.

QR ordering and what we chose that day
After sitting down, I checked the menu and ordered through a QR code.

Looking through the menu, there was steak as well as pasta, so I spent a while deciding what to get. What caught my eye most was the carrot duck aglio olio (garlic oil pasta). Aglio olio with carrot and duck isn't a combination you see often, so I was curious how it would taste. And since I was also in the mood for steak that day,

I ended up ordering carrot duck aglio olio, house steak, and cider. If you're visiting with two people, splitting a pasta and a steak between you seems like a solid combination.
House steak, served on a warmed plate
The house steak came out first, so I tried it. There wasn't an option to choose doneness separately, but what I got was cooked just right — tender, not tough.

What I liked especially was the plate the steak was served on.

The plate itself came out warmed, so the food's heat didn't fade quickly.

Alongside the steak came fries and onion rings.

Dipped in ketchup and mayo, they worked well as a crispy side on their own, and eating them alternately with the meat made everything taste even richer.

Adding a little grainy mustard on top of the steak brought a nice pop of texture and sharp flavor that paired well with the meat.

The plating was clean too, so the food photos all came out looking nice.
What does the carrot duck aglio olio taste like?
And the dish that exceeded my expectations most that day was the carrot duck aglio olio. At first glance, what stood out was the carrot rapée (a French-style shredded carrot salad) piled on top of the pasta along with pieces of duck.

It clearly looked different from a typical aglio olio, which made me curious.

Taking a bite with the pasta, carrot rapée, and duck all together, the combination worked much better than I expected.

The carrot rapée wasn't too soft — it kept just the right amount of bite, which went well with the pasta.

The duck was tender, not chewy at all. Combined with the clean flavor of garlic, the overall balance of flavors was pretty good.
What I liked especially was the fresh garlic aroma coming through. I ordered it at first just out of curiosity since it looked like an unusual dish, but after trying it, it ended up being the most memorable dish I ordered that day.
Was the weekend wait worth it?
Even though I had to wait in line to visit this place in Yeonnam-dong, I ate happily without feeling like it was a waste of time, and next time I'm nearby I want to try other menu items too. If you're looking for a Western restaurant with a good atmosphere in Yeonnam-dong, I strongly recommend Hôtel de Couture haha. I'd go back 100% of the time.
