Konkuk Univ. Station bakery after a couple's weekend run: Stack Bakery

In short

Stack Bakery Konkuk University Station Main Branch is a croissant-focused bakery café in a residential street off Ttukseom-ro 31-gil in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. On a weekend morning, the blogger and her husband were out running, switched to Seoul's Ttareungyi public bikes and stopped at Stack Bakery. On the 2nd floor they shared two Americano sets and five pastries, including a kaya butter croissant, an almond pain au chocolat and a tomato cheese pastry. The almond pain au chocolat and kaya butter croissant were the highlights and only the blueberry ricotta croissant fell a little short, making Stack Bakery worth another visit on a running route and bakery crawl.

Today's story is about Stack Bakery (스택베이커리) near Konkuk Univ. Station. My husband once told me their croissants are really good, so I'd been meaning to go someday. This weekend we ran there from home together. haha

What are the opening hours of Stack Bakery Konkuk Univ. Station Main Branch?

Stack Bakery's Konkuk Univ. Station main branch is open every day from 08:00 to 21:00, with last order at 20:00. It's closed every Wednesday. Drink orders end at 20:00, and you can stay inside until 20:30.

A croissant hotspot that's packed even in a residential area

Stack Bakery sits among houses on Ttukseom-ro 31-gil, so I wondered if it would be a bit hard to find, but when we got there it was really crowded. It's famous by word of mouth for croissants, and it felt like everyone came knowing exactly where they were going.

The moment we walked in, the smell of butter filled the air, and that smell alone half won me over (T_T). I'd run early in the morning and was hungry, so the smell was even more deadly,,

What was in the display case on a weekend morning?

The weekend-morning display case at Stack Bakery was full of all kinds of croissants, pastries and salt bread. Everything looked so tempting that I had a happy dilemma choosing. Maybe because it was morning, almost every type of bread was available, so we could pick whatever we wanted!

Honestly, I'm not really a fan of layered croissant-type bread, but strangely I suddenly craved it that day haha

The two sets and 5 pastries we ordered as a couple

Stack Bakery also has set menus that pair bread with a drink. We ordered the five items below.

  • Croissant Americano set
  • Blueberry ricotta croissant Americano set
  • Kaya butter croissant
  • Almond pain au chocolat
  • Tomato cheese pastry

The 2nd-floor seating on a weekend morning

Even on a weekend morning, the 2nd floor of Stack Bakery was already almost full, wow

We switched to Ddareungi (Seoul's public bikes) partway through our run, and we settled into a 2nd-floor seat where we could see our Ddareungi parked out front haha

Look at this full table of temptation, hahahaha

How were the kaya butter croissant and Americano at Stack Bakery?

The iced Americano at Stack Bakery was strong and clean, just right with all that buttery bread. My husband took the first bite of the kaya butter croissant, and he was satisfied right away, maybe because the coconut aroma and sweetness of kaya jam (a coconut egg jam) go so well with a butter croissant!

I heard Stack Bakery is especially famous for its kaya croissant, and even though the butter soaks in richly, it isn't greasy, and the kaya jam cuts the richness perfectly. It brought back memories of the kaya toast I had in Singapore..

Favorite: almond pain au chocolat. Disappointing: blueberry ricotta

We shared all five breads, one each, like a taste survey, and my favorite was the almond pain au chocolat. It was crisp outside and soft inside with rich chocolate, and I was satisfied from the first bite. The texture was exactly what Koreans call 겉바속촉 (crisp outside, moist inside). With almonds on top, it was even nuttier!

The blueberry ricotta croissant I'd been looking forward to was a little disappointing. The ricotta didn't match as well as I expected, and personally I think it would have been even better with cream cheese instead of ricotta. The thick richness of cream cheese meeting the tartness of blueberry would probably balance better.

Would we return to Stack Bakery as a running course and bakery pilgrimage?

The Konkuk Univ. Station main branch of Stack Bakery had plenty of seats, and the staff were all kind, greeting us warmly both while we waited and when we ordered. The bread was all tasty and the service was good, so it's a place I'd happily stop at again on a future run. Next time I want to try the salt bread too. It seems like a great spot for my husband and me to make a weekend running course and bakery pilgrimage! 🌷
